Hunter Education Home Study Course- No classes available?

Hi everyone.

 

I just got my first rifle a few months ago and I'm excited about getting into sport shooting and hunting. NY DEC offers a "home study course" where you take an online class and then go in person to take a test. I finished up the online course through hunter-ed.com. I recieved my voucher to bring in to the in-person portion.

 

Here's the problem: There are no courses even being offered. Is this something that is only offered seasonally? Are there private gunshops or outdoors/sportsman stores that have persons certified to help me finish up my hunter safety?

You will find classes late march through April. It is not that easy just to show up and take a test. You have to register in a home study class and the instructor has the choice to accept you or not with the online or make you do the course. I personally make them take the home study course

Yea I would wait a few months and then start looking for a class near you. If you're ever going to hunt with a bow you can take a combine class and in 3 days have both youre classes done !!

check the local gun clubs...Our news letter came last week and I think there is a class soon there...but I just skimmed it....

Does the DEC keep track of the availability of the courses or test sites? Would it do any good to contact them to see if anything is available and when?

I don't believe they do... instructors pick their own dates and times... I'm sure they give notification to the state that they're having a course..but to my knowledge there is no list kept by the DEC that the public can refer to... in fact I believe the individual instructors handle everything themselves in their local area... advertising, sign-up and everything... some even have to use money out of their own pockets for some of what's needed for their course... that's what I get from the fellas at our club that put on the courses... we do two courses a year.. usually in the early spring before turkey season and late summer just before deer season.

Thank you everyone! I'm going to give the DEC a call to hear what they have to say. I'll let y'all know what comes of it. Worst case scenario is that I wait a couple months, which isn't a big deal.

Just saying that do not be surprised if they make you take the class even after completing the online class. You have to enroll in a home study class to qualify.  I do not let students come in and just test as I am not sure who actually took the online stuff to get the papers.  Not saying to did that , but I have had some complete the online class and not be able to answer a question in class.   Not many do home study.  You may get stuck taking a complete class.  But you will have a leg up on others
