I just wanted to throw a disclaimer out there to let everyone know that I was in no way involved with what happend in my friends back yard, I just thought it would be a great question for the group.

well sort of.  If you were there and witnessed it and did not report it, you are involved.

but who gets to say what is the right thing?

that's the difference between legally right and morally/ethically right isn't it. Nobody really says, although religions have tried. You just know what is wrong and what is right, especially when it comes to the innocent ie woman, children and animals.

A good analogy is when discussing nudity vs pornography. I forget who said it, but when asked they basically said "i cannot define porn, but I know it when i see it".

IMO - ethics and legality are two separate measuring sticks.  Ethics are a personal moral code (how you conduct yourself regardless of others).  Legal requirements are the rules and regulations established by society that are supposed to represent the ethical code of the majority of society.  They don't always meet or mesh.

In this case, the law required that he contact DEC or police to report the issue.  The end result, would likely have been the same.  I have no issue with his personal decision to put that deer down and use the meat - whether or not his actions complied with the law.

Actually if he ethically needed to act, the law required the action to be reporting it. There was no legal requirement to do anything.

I would be ok even if he didn't use the meet. The main goal is to end the suffering.

Each will have their own opinion.  I agree ending suffering was the best result regardless, but it sure it nice not to waste.  I have no idea whether, if reported, it would go to food bank.  But assuming it would, and he didn't want the meat, then one could argue it would have been better for him to report.  Again, I agree with his decision, reported or not.

Another side note, I would like to donate a deer this year, I am deciding between the food bank of westchester which would be a good and obvious choice, and the wolf sanctuary in north Salem. The wolf sanctuary likes to feed wild game to animals they plan on releasing back

In the wild so they do not get a taste for domestic animals and become a pest and a danger to farmers. Sure would love to watch the wolves eat a deer!

On this side note, if any of you want to donate deer near Rochester, the men's ministry at my church does a soup kitchen on the last Sat. of every month. We buy/cook the food and give it out to those in need in the inner-city (usually around Ave. A and Clinton). If you really want to donate a deer, let me know and I will be happy to butcher and cook it up for use by the ministry. We typically do about 50 meals a month.

Combination of personal beliefs and legal standards.

I may have forgotten but don't you have some sort of Compliance-like role at a company? The irony of Legal and Compliance banter in this thread doesn't escape me, LOL.

Most normal people probably could envision times when ethics trumps law and times when law trumps ethics - for either self preservation or self-conciousness.

Some guy, I'm not saying who, had to put down two does in front of his house two falls ago in the span of two weeks. One time, he had to use a .22 as the doe was pinned under the driver's truck and was moving about alot with bones protruding. The next, a mom with a caravan full of kids, with the doe trying to get up when it was obvious it wasn't going to. In that instance, the guy had to use his bow while the mother had the kids look away. Smarter move than using the gun, most likely. Both driver's were gracious, at least I am told.

Bottom line, sometimes the "right" thing for that person isn't legal, and sometimes, its not ethical. The personal compass of most people are similar. It's the outliers that end up causing most of the news stories.

Good cause indeed. I have a few extra arrows cut and fletched for this purpose, lol. It stinks being in a one deer a year household - if I am lucky. Wife won't eat it no matter what.

You know we use it - lol - as evidenced by me personally being out of venison in Jan after shooting 5 last year. In fact, you donated one to the church last year as I recall.

Yes and agree on all counts. Sometime the ethics and laws line up easily (which is probably why they were drafted in the first place) other times the distance between our out morals/ethics  and the law can be wide apart.  It may no even be illegal. I have come into situations where something is perfectly legal but my ethics and conscience won't allow it. Works both ways.

  • 2 weeks later...

Coyotes gotta eat!

I'd have called the DEC and kept right on eating my corn flakes in hopes of it stumbling into some soft-hearted anti hunters yard. Maybe they would see that protecting bambi from the savage hunters just allows for overpopulation. Are they so dense that they ignore the fact that more deer roaming around is gonna lead to more dead, dying and mangled deer laying all over the place?

For some reason I think the antis would spin the story so that it was the hunters fault still. We can never win
