mmkay
yeah, look at engine hours instead of mileage..........Police car usually ='s 24 hours a day, average civilian car ='s less than 2 (on average)..........big difference. NYC taxis don't run 24/7? they are yellow money making machines....they never tun them off, just swamp out middle eastern drivers
jjb4900
new Police cars are the least of my worries when it comes to wasteful government spending.......like I mentioned earlier, at least we can benefit from them at some point..........I wonder how many government officials have take home cars and free tax payer provided gas and ezpass that is only used to get them to and from their gov't office jobs? the spending is disgusting, and I realize it's easy to point the finger at what we can actually see with our eyes, but it is even more disgusting what the average person does not see......you can even go as far as to look at our utility companies who do the same and pass that cost on to us. mmkay
125k on a Police car is entirely different than 125k on a civilian car. In addition to the actual miles, Police cars are almost constantly running. An officer running radar is sitting in a running car…an officer writing a report is sitting in a running car..an officer who is out side of his/her car investigating an incident where the flashing lights are on leaves the car running. An officer who is outside his/her car investigating an incident, in the winter time ,will leave the car running to keep the windows from frosting up. At the end of a shift the officer turns the keys over to another officer, and the cycle continues. Idling hours take a toll on cars. after 100K things start to break. Unless you are in the military, you are also a CIVILIAN...police don't count, nor do fireman, nor garbage collectors or any others...just Military

ants
Swap the engine, it doesnt cost $50k+, like a new cruiser does. Spent 5+K on an engine to go into a 3-4 year old car that has by that time, because of excessive use, developed other issues?? mmmmaybe
mmkay
like I said earlier, many taxis are old police cars bought at auction............and I almost puked in my mouth just thinking that someone would put Police on the same level as taxi drivers...... not sure i understand..Police are not the same that's for sure. police are generally more educated, higher paid and I would assume more professional...but the cars are basically the same as you stated. just staying if a taxi can last 500K miles, a cop car can last 200K. no need to get rid of cop cards at 125K miles
mmkay
can a police vehicle be both civilian and a police vehicle? pretty sure he was talking about a vehicle, not a person. maybe..maybe I misread it. But having many military members in my family and many cops/fireman as well...it’s a running augment when my police/fireman family members call themselves non-civilian. The military family members don't seem to like it. I just feel a Civilian is anyone not in the military.

Would you rather have the cop responding to help you or yours be on the way in a car with 500k or 50k??
jjb4900
I'm pretty sure there are standards that are set as to when a police vehicle should be decommissioned, when bullet proof vests should be replaced, how often service ammo should be replaced and how often weapons should be replaced.......I would guess that every agency would try to stretch it as far as possible to get every nickel out of everything they could, but there also has to be someone who keeps that in check as well......it's quite different from the guy who drives 45 miles an hour to work that's 2 miles from home everyday or the taxi driver who drive's 5 miles an hour in stop and go traffic for 8 hours a day...these are guys who may have to drive a 100 miles an hour to catch someone who just murdered your wife and kids, I would hope you would want them to have the best equipment to do that job, if not I don't know what to tell you.....I don't know why anyone would complain about that, but have at it if you want. ants
Damn cops with their new cars every 3-5 years!!!! Makes me so mad!!! What about Firetrucks??? Those Firetrucks last 15-20 years…..Its the same thing….And now that you mention it, what about Duty ammo???? why are we spending money to replace Duty ammo every year?? I have shot pistol ammo that was over 30 years old and it still fired….So what the hell??? And guns!!! I have a .38 revolver that is 50 years old and fires just fine. In fact a lot of old U.S. service pistols/revolvers that are replaced by more reliable newer handguns, are purchased by third world countries to be used by their local police. They have no problem with these older weapons . Why don't U.S. police agencies just buy all used stuff?? Think of how much money that would save. Why replace all this stuff so often?? LOL!!! just me being me….but seriously
mmkay
I agree that cops and fireman can have all the new equipment they want, when they want. If they agree to retire or start collecting their pensions at 65 years old...deal?
jjb4900
I agree that cops and fireman can have all the new equipment they want, when they want. If they agree to retire or start collecting their pensions at 65 years old...deal? as long as the people who really benefit from it understand that they may get sub par service because of less then reliable equipment those guys have to work with.......you have to realize that equipment advancements that cost money, benefit the people they serve more than they do the people who get them in order to serve the people better....I'm sure the average cop or fireman would be content with less then the latest gadgets, but who would really suffer? mmkay
No I said or intended to say...buy all the new stuff that is needed...just enjoy it for a few more years...just work to 65 like the rest of us jerks...I mean tax payers...imagine all the new toys...all the time you'll get to use them....win/win...no? jjb4900
So no new toy/equipment then...so sad take a look at L.I. fireman.....all volunteers, do it all for nothing, and I'm sure many other places are the same.....volunteer ambulance company's, volunteer firefighter's....they do it all for pretty much nothing....not every place gets paid, I'd give them the shirt off my back to keep them doing what they do....and most paid dept's are far from rich, I have no problem giving them the best tools they need to the their job....they don't benefit from the new toys, the people they serve do.
mmkay
Agree about volunteer fd..I'm talking paid civil servants..and this was about new cars for police...really is a minor issue...if they truly need new cars they will get them...I just hope some paid cops/firefighters see this. ..they have a important and at many times dangerous job...bu the their early retirements are breaking their tax paying friends/neighbors...just let them retire at 65 like the rest of us
Nomad
Well,ok but my wife is retiring at 62. I'm 56 and going at 58 mostly because both my shoulders are shot , I have a pinched nerve that makes my hands numb and I'm trying to avoid a second neck operation. Oh and then there is that hernia and the hip and knee that hurt and sometimes go out ( knee) the last time at a highrise fire ,oh and the arthitus in both feet. I've gotten a few people out including carrying them down ladders, not to sure how that would go at age 65 but if you'd like we can meet up in 9 years and have a go at it . Oh and the ones I hear using the word civilians when referring to the public are the former military guys, but honestly nobody I know outside of the Internet world care. I'm sorry you never saved enough to retire early too, we could live just fine without my pension which will be perhaps 25% of what we will live on , leaving our biggets nest eggs alone till RMD at 70. ants
I agree that cops and fireman can have all the new equipment they want, when they want. If they agree to retire or start collecting their pensions at 65 years old...deal? The reason cops and firemen can retire early is because the job takes a toll on you both mentally and physically. Not that you care. By the time a cop or fireman is 45-50 ( again provided that they didn't work in Mayberry or Hooterville since they were in their early 20's) they are pretty scuffed up, to say the least. They are also not that desirable hires if they want to start a new career to sustain them until they are 65. But the retirement system is changing and will make the jealous whiners happy. Most new hires can't collect their full pensions until age 62. But Im sure the thought of a 60 year old grey haired cop with a slight limp, walking up to your house, because you reported someone kicking in your door, will make you feel pretty safe. You can retire at 65 because thats the path YOU chose. Stop being a jealous hater.

mmkay
wow...not jealous, nor a hater. just pointing out a situation that in my opinion is unfair. Plumbers, carpenters, hell US Soldiers don't get what PD/FD get. personally, I turned down a job with the NYPD about 25 years ago. my number was 585 (if I remember right).... I took all the test, physical and other BS...They called me and I said no. ..about 35K took the test. they were paying roughly 25K back then...I was making more then double that at the time. I have made more working in privatre industry, then I wouild have as cop. I've also saved enough and made sound investments. I own multipel rental properies. I'll sell everyting and be fine when i leave NY. HOWEVER...I was very lucky. Again I was very lucky. most aren't lucky. ever see a roofer in his 50's...they can barly walk...but they will be roofing for another 15 years...just to make it to 65. if you are a PO/FM and can't function, you can alway retire on disability...isn't that better for you...isn't it tax free? Hell my brother in-law (retired NYC Fireman, put so much white powered up his nose, he retired with bad sinus)...he gets 85K a year tax free..only 45 years old...spends most his time in FLA in strip clubs. again, I don't hate any of you nor i'm I jealous, but you are very lucky to work until you are 45 and then collect $'s for another 30. Just admit it...you won the workers lottery! unlike you, I admit that my success was based on not only my mind/hard work but to a large extent just being DAMM LUCKY. Right..You were offered it but turned it down because it wasn't right for you at the time…You CHOSE to go another route...Tons of people turn the job down every year, intact PD'd have a hard time finding enough people to do the "Dream job"so you're not alone. If you had taken the job would you be singing the same tune right now ????? I'll bet my entire pension that you wouldn't be. And the broken down roofer in his 50's could have tried to get into the PD/FD and been a broken down cop or firefighter in his 50's but at least have a pension. BTW I was DAMN LUCKY too.
