Less deer

Last season my group and I saw noticeably less deer in Catskills than the year before. This despite some of the best still hunting conditions over opening week than we've had in quite some time. Presumably our lack of sightings were due to the Nasty winter we had 2 years ago. Now that we have had 2 consecutive harsh winters in a row I am expecting very difficult hunting in our area. Like circa early 2000s. We'll see...

Was watching the news this morning and they said because of the harsh winter there are less deer especially in SW New York and in the Catskills.

In my area there is definetly less deer. No doubt about it. I am guessing it is a localized, because I have not heard much about last winters kill. I am north of Binghampton, and up in the hills, more like central NY. I had 4 feet of snow in April, so that would explain it. A few miles a way there are plenty of deer.

Definitely less dear in the Oneonta to Stamford corridor.

I found many dead/frozen carcases over the early spring while out walking the dog.  Got below -10 degrees for about 3-4 weeks straight with 4+ feet of snow.

Now the coyotes are running them ragged with a lot of road kill.

I've been up every night for the past 2 weeks (including tonight since 1am) with the dog barking at the howling coyotes, usually between 1-3am.  They're out with the bright moon chasing deer.  I haven't seen a rabbit yet this summer!

P.s., crazy antlerless permit scheme, in 4O preference points required while right across the street in 4F chances are high, go figure.  Guess they have to split up areas some way and using roads makes it easier for people to know what unit they are hunting in.
