Lost my first big buck in jamesport

I lost my first big buck today after I followed the trail for 40 minutes. It went from a long trail with big piles of bright red frothy blood to just drops on the rail road tracks. Any advice what to do? I went and got a blood trail light but only found one more drop of blood.

I would suggest deer search or get as many people as you can to comb the area in a grid pattern. I would wait till mid morning so you don't ruin other hunters sitting in the AM. It sounds like you might of one lunged it somehow with a gun.

If possible get out way before sunrise and go to the last area you saw a major blood trail and listen for a while. If you hear yotes game could be over but it may be possible they are running it down.

Does deer search operate on Long Island? I'm going back out this morning to look again. I'm just out of ideas what to do at the end of the blood trail. Any thoughts on why there would be so much blood then just drops? I found the arrow, it went straight through him with dark hair on the the ground

Frothy blood likely means lung hit. If the blood trail was previously very good, the deer is probably dead nearby the last blood. The heart can't pump more blood out of the deer when there is no blood left. Mark the spots of blood to give you an idea of what direction the deer is heading. Start looking in that direction. Mark every drop of blood you find.

That makes a lot of sense thanks. I'm out looking now but it rained last night so all the blood is gone except the big puddles. There is a dead dead on the road missing the rack. I'm going to see if it has a hole in it

That is tough, I would try deer search.  Look for crows!  I would walk those tracks for at least another 400-600 yards and look on both sides for white or antlers sticking up.  Sometimes they are hard to see from one angle but stick out like a sore thumb when look at from another direction.  Good luck and keep us posted!  What town are you in?

Oh yeah, if there are " big puddles" there's a dead deer somewhere. Go get him.

How far did you track it in the 40 min?  I would get as many people in the area to search if deer search is not available.  Normally I would volunteer but I am in recovery mode today after 2+ weeks of hunting.  Sounds like the wound clogged up but he is probably dead.

 

It is not impossible for me to come out today.  Give a call if you might want me to help.  A few more details needed before I pack up and drive out but I will PM you my cell #.

I tracked it far probably 400+ yards. When I hit it, it just walked away and stopped at the other end of the field and just stood there. The 2 guys on bikes cut through the field trespassing and pushed him into the woods at the other end of the neighbors field. He ran then and where the woods meets the field is where the biggest blood spot was with frothy piles. I could see the air bubbles in it. Then it went through the woods onto the tracks and that where the blood stopped.

I just shot the distance with my rang finder.

281 yards from my stand to the end of our field and then 183 yard down the tracks to the last blood spot

ok I would keep going in the direction he was heading and then try to criss cross the area looking for where he bedded.  To post pictures click on more reply options next to where it says Post.  After you scour the area try driving up and down the next road looking for him in back yards and any place you can see from the road.  Not a bad Idea to walk the road next to where the tracks are to see if he made it that far, just do not walk the road with your bow.

I called the search. Thank you for all the help and advice. I think the one by the road missing it's rack is mine. It doesn't look like it was hit and had froth coming out of it's mouth and nose. I just didn't see a hole in it.

Aww that sucks!  Do you have any pictures of him?  They did not show in the post above.  Do you have any trail cam pics before this happened?  At least you get to harvest the meat.  I would call the DEC and let them know the situation, you should be able to use a doe tag but with the antlers cut off I would let the DEC know so you do not have any issues.  They might even give you a separate tag.

No I don't sorry. The pics I tried to put up were of the blood. Do deers swell up over night?

 Hey Beach, that does suck. I hit one a couple of years ago and lost the track. He was found about 4 days later in the river. He musta died crossing the river and we never saw him. Had tracked him a long ways though. just a thought.

Yes they can swell overnight.
