Yeah so they say...Seems to read different. I guess its like a religion..You have to believe in order for it to work.

I do it myself here inside and outside the pens to make trophy bucks but thats kinda off subject.

Honestly, one of the biggest focuses I see is understanding and doing what is right for the property you hunt or own regardless of what the regulating authority has out there. (legally). Understanding your capacity, populations and habitat;making harvest decisions that meet your objectives and monitoring results. I guess it is a personal responsibility thing and I did 100% agree with this DEC comment; "just becasue you have a tag doesn't mean you have to fill it on your property". No agency will every be able to manage our property as well as we can if we are knowledgeable and involved.

What is the NYQDMAs agenda?

I've posted this before- I am a Qdma member and feel sold out to read how They thank the dec for their efforts to reach out and work with hunters. That's a crock. The dec is inept and letting all of us who hunt deer down. They're not managing the herd or interacting with hunters.. And the quality deer part is bs as well as we all disagree with their reported harvest numbers and ages.

I totally agree with you on the NYSCC and will add it's a crock of chit they are mandated to be part of anything. Guessing most of us have never met the members let alone have been questioned by them. I also see they have a fee to join which says a lot.

As for how hard it is to do the survey- quite contrary. I am guy none of you know and I had 500+ responses in a day. The dec, who's job is to know what hunters desire, should do far better than 2700 unless that's their scape goat. Judging by my conversations and survey responses that contradict theirs (always have too).... They want no opposition.

The QDMA's agenda is posted all over the place. Website, Facebook, their magazine, etc etc etc. The NY QDMA advisory council has their webpage http://www.nyqdma.org/where you can see what they are doing. They also have a Facebook page. In case you dont know how the branches work, each branch chooses their own stance on issues. We arent told what to think, or what to support. For example, some of the NY branches support mandatory ARs, others do not.

We thanked the DEC for taking the time to come out and speak. Honestly, anytime we have asked them to do something at one of our events, they have been great. Why would we not thank them for that? Just because we may not agree with some of their programs or methods doesnt mean we should not extend courtesy and professionalism toward them.

What does the "quality deer" part of the organizations name have to do with the DEC?

Wow two of you totally took that out of context- that was posted while the survey was still going- I wanted unbiased participation. The results have since been posted on here and all the other forums where the survey was- weeks ago

I am not taking anything out of context, and my context is crystal clear. "Agenda" has multiple contexts and is not always a negative word. I just think you made a mistake by lumping those  two organizations into the same category. I agree with part of what you said, but not all of it.

I am not trying to discourage your efforts, and I am not one either side of the issue, I am just pointing out a few things that you can either take my word for or figure it out later on your own. I do think, however, the council has some deficiencies (putting it politely). From my POV however, I cannot see how QDMA is impacting me or others.

You need to understand something else - obviously you are passionate enough to launch surveys and get involved. You need to remember that 99% of hunters are full of it. They will argue with you even when there is nothing to argue with. And that is referring to real hunters. Not everyone online is an actual hunter, including on this site. They also will argue to no end with you.

I am neutral in these issues, but I give you credit for your effort!

If that is all you think it is about, you are paying your dues but not understanding what is being worked on or promoted. Very easy to sit on the outside and throw stones. Why not step up, get involved and work towards something? Or is it just easier to piss and moan?

What stones have been thrown?

Ive been practicing qdm since the late 90s, and would dare to bet a member of the QDMA since the start. I see exactly what it is about here.. and you may not like that but it is what it is.

Why not step up? Nice default rhetoric. I spent 8-9 hour son that deer survey that flew around and went to the courtship dance with the DEC in Henrietta over an hour away the night before I had to drive 13 hours. You've got no idea what I do or where....just because you pay your dues and wear a hat doesn't mean you have cause or concern.

Did you believe that over half the buck take is 2.5 or older? that only 40% of harvests are reported? that 2700 respondents were enough to make laws for the whole state? that voluntary ARs are enough?

Not sure what luxury acreage you have but in NY unless sits fenced you don't own enough to make a difference and again you don't know me or who could school you on deer and deer management

Mike, simply put (and explaining so much of my aggravation here) is I feel betrayed by the QDMA with regard to complementing the DEC on their efforts.

I had 750 responses on a survey coming form my barstool effort. The QDMA could organize a much larger survey and force it in the face of the DEC but I feel they do not as thee don't want to ruffle feathers. Whether taken out of context or not some of Kips comments related to JH and the Big Game "board' of the DEC were BS. I would bet my ground the far majority of the hunters here (full of chit or otherwise) feel the DEC makes claims, comments and stats that are BS. As posted in CC's reply above w regard to numbers, their on paper only math only approach to census, surveys and takes is a crock. No body can push back because we are all so divided. I hear all bout QDMA youth days and fund raisers but where the heck is the real deer involvement? The Buff-Niag chapter doesn't even meet. Your chapter has done a lot, as have you, but there should be national support working on the NYSDEC issues. 50M a year in license sales and the first interaction Ive had with the DEC on deer just took place at the little Henrietta meeting. I felt Jeremy looked down his nose at all of us the whole time and was brazen with his "provide us your ideas BUT....." discussion.

Obviously thanks is necessary but they are a government entity designed to serve us as well. We tip waiters/waitresses but it is their job, right?

What other events has the DEC come out to?

There is no quality deer management in NY beyond the micro levels of persons w such interest (who typically provide better hunting for their neighbors than themselves). How balanced is our herd? if I said- How many does should I harvest on my farm  you'd likely reply with you need o census them first. why doesn't the DEC make attempts to census the herd with open channels? They openly admitted their other (closed door) ideas have failed. Age & health are the quality deer part and unless you drink Hurst's Kool Aid- we both know it is not present here in most areas. Why didn't the QDMA (itself) have formal questions for Art and Jeremy at the meeting? It is my right to speak my mind and more I see it as an expensive magazine subscription.

Oh yeah- Enrollment is higher due to branding- cool swag not the cause. Other states have called out where do our dollars go and where are your efforts. Not there yet, but youth days and fund raising dinners are doing as much for Quality Deer as my big game license dollars are returned to deer species, habitat and hunting improvements.

Oh. now i get it.

The only part I like about mandatory ARs is they force the ethical (oxymoron use) gun hunters to slow down on lead flinging to eye up a bucks head gear.

My wish list? I want the DEC to do its job. Census the herd (within feasible means, not based on buck take), push to have control over game species and game laws- that's there fight not mine, and work on improving the hunting experience and MORESO interaction. Not-so random surveys and exclusive channels through sportsman's clubs is crap. JH's comments on the internet limits contributions at the meeting is BS their damn continually failing and remodeled license (and reporting) system is all electronic.

They don't want to know, care if they did, take the money and run....I would like the QDMA to step in and fear it may be more of the similar for activity.

Attend any of the field days? volunteer at any disabled Vet hunts or other Vet activities? It is evident to me you are the type that will never be satisfied, always believe your efforts and ideas are superior to any others offered but are not interested in actually taking part and trying to make any difference.Talk about armchair quarterbacks.  Practicing QDM since 90's? I'd love to see the results of your efforts.

Yeah they say enrollment is up but its kinda funny how every other piece  of the hunting world is down. Less hunter-Less land-More Laws.Even at their own yearly fundraiser the numbers are down yet claim that membership is up?  Hmmm Strange how that works?

What do the field days or special persons hunts have to do with quality deer? That's my point. Though noble in effort where is the relationship to the deer? So if I did the same things without the QDMA it doesn't count? Pat yourself on the back all you want btu you just proved my point like a champ.

Not one to brag, or treat deer like results, but if you were chat with anyone that knows me you'll find yourself very wrong yet again in this thread.

If you can't see the correlation of getting people out and exposed to the QDM concepts, showing them the benefits, instruction and seminars in habitat improvement, timber management and skills like aging on the hoof them I guess you may understand the concepts but do little to promote them outside your circle. That is fine. Your choice

Do you mean the National Convention?

Yes..60,000 some members they claim and a tad over 300 show for a fundraiser?  For the life of me i cant figure why someone would give their money to a group down south that have nothing to do with your property?  I have been using their QDM for years to make trophy bucks.

But again kinda off subject for what they do for sportsmen. I guess if you called any of the hunters in Minnesota that were paying members and asked them what the QDMA did to support them in their time of need with their DNR you would get an answer.

And you are including the local events In That total? That bad in MN then there must not be any members left. Right? We all know you issue with your business You have covered it in many threads. If the QDM is so great for your properties you hunt what is the down side in promoting it in other places?

Yes i am talking total members. Does not matter if they are from Ny or Alabama.  Well it was easy to see to see how many less there is from that state. Regardless it was obvious what they didnt do.

Again the QDMA had no effect on my business or any high fence operation. In fact it is now showing just how wrong they were and the egg is on their face. Funny part is its the deer on their side of the fence that is dropping left and right.

QDM is just a process to make trophy deer. Just like a religion, They can believe all they want but their bottom line is to feed and hold the biggest trophy buck they can on their property.

The best part is that some are foolish enough to pay their cash to do it?

Not sure where you are getting you numbers. our banquet alone will be 250 for just one NY branch. I do get a kick out of some that expect an organization of hunter to have immediate and controlling influence over a government agency. Hell as hunters we can't even get on the same page for simple causes like gun control.

I have to disagree with you about what the "bottom line" is. What you describe and what some out there want it TDM. Trophy Deer Management. They are not the same approach. They have similar component like monitoring and adjusting the buck to doe ratios but the goals are not even close. TDM is  focused on growing trophy racks.

I also disagree about the "holding deer on their property" part. I know more members that either don't own property or own parcels that are too small to ever try and hold a population on them. That doesn't seem to diminish their desire  or efforts to practice QDM. Seems pretty foolish for them I guess since you are so certain their motives are so selfish.

Has nothing to do with selfish..They are trying to improve their land..QDM...To feed, hold and kill the biggest buck they can. Pretty simple.Anyone can believe anything they want but the bottom line with every cut and every seed put in is with the thought of a 130 inch buck gettin harvested in the fall.

Look at the fundraiser that qdma has every year and get back to me with the numbers.  Say from 2014.
