Knowing the boundries

The below steps are only for those that like me live in Monroe County NY. But the principles apply to everyone. Simply just knowing the actual property maps not only ensure that you stay legal when hunting, but also that you stay in the right and you don't upset people. But I have also found that people think they own property they don't. This is when having a print out of the tax map in your truck with your permission slips really comes in handy. I also take screenshots of the tax map and load them onto my Garmin Alpha so I know when my hounds are about to leave the property and I can turn them around.

  1. Open the Monroe County Parcel Viewer
  2. This step is optional but I really like it. Click the icon in the lower left of the map. This will expand to three options
    1. Community
    2. 2015 Aerial
    3. 2012 Aerial

  3. Click 2015 Ariel and wait for the aerial overview to load (it will not load if you're not zoomed in enough).
    1. This is really cool because you can see right down to the tree where the property line is

  4. In the upper right click the tools menu and then the zoom in option
  5. Click and hold about where in the county you want to see and drag the mouse over the area creating a box.
  6. Continue to do this until the aerial overview loads and you can see all the property lines. Generally so that about 1 mile covers your screen
  7. You can move around the by click the tools icon again (so that it says tools and not zoom in) and then clicking the center of the map and dragging it around
  8. Once you have located the property that you want to view click and hold it
  9. The property should turn yellow and the pane on the left will populate with information (you might need to click additional information in the popup)
  10. Highlight and copy the PT_KEY
  11. Open a new tab and go to the Monroe County Real Property Portal
  12. Paste the PT_KEY into the Parcel ID box and click search
  13. Some general information will display
  14. Click "Pay Property Taxes" (green button) in the upper right
  15. This will open a new tab that will display the legal owner of the property and their mailing address

I find this really helpful when searching for new places to hunt. Then I can go right to the owner and get permission. I like this because often times that is not who posts the property or "controls" it. I have found that often times farm workers have claimed hunting in certain areas but the farmers will let you out. The workers won't. But when you get it in writing from the farmer they can't kick you off.

I hope this helps someone!!! Play around with it and have fun.

Onxmaps hunt map app is great for this ~ giving the property owner, boundary lines and your location. There's about a dozen different overlays also. I've used the Zillow map in there app before to find several boundary rods.

  • 2 weeks later...

Back in the day before all the posted signs, I do remember times when I had absolutely no idea whose property I was on. There was no Google maps or hand-held location devices. There were miles of featureless forested areas with no clues as to where you are, or who owns the land. Of course the good news back then was that the landowners really didn't give a damn if you were there or not anyways....lol. Today, for those that have the devices, I suppose there are ways of getting to identify land, but not everybody owns that kind of equipment. Since people today do care about visitors on their property (and many times for good reason) I personally am very thankful for well posted land.

A lot of counties have this available and it is very useful if you have a smart phone you can type in your lat/lon coordinates and mark it on a map so you have a visual where the boundary line is. If you search blank county, tax map, GIS you may get a pretty sweet mapwith boundary lines, owners name, and as you move over the map the lat/lon should be displayed. Obviously not foolproof but gets you in the ballpark.

The onx maps is nice because it allows use for the majority of the state and the convenience factor as opposed to various county GIS and cross-reference sites. It is worth the lowly $20-30/yr. I bought mine at Harrisburg for $20.

Don't see how someone can say its too costly vs, the value proposition. My time saved in one session of searching for owners is worth that alone - not including the other benefits of the app.

I thought I'd give this a try. Looks real cool.

The maps came out fine but was unable to get anything beyond step 9 to work.

10. Highlight and copy the PT_KEY

11. Open a new tab and go to the Monroe County Real Property Portal

12. Paste the PT_KEY into the Parcel ID box and click search

13. Some general information will display

14. Click "Pay Property Taxes" (green button) in upper right

It kept coming up "Address not found". I tried several different property PT_KEY numbers thinking it might be local to various areas. It never displayed a green button.

Does it still work for you? Am I doing something wrong? I would love getting names for Landowners.

Sorry for the late response. Had my eyes operated on so I haven't been online much. When you have the section yellow under the "I want to" click additional details. Then the left pane should change and you should see something like this That's what you feed into step 12.

PT_KEY
