maytom
Yes, I usually cut mine off right where it attaches to the breast. Some grab a hold of it and yank it off. I get nervous by that method. Edited April 14, 2016 by maytom

What keeps it from fraying and falling apart?
ants
Nice collection!! I once shoot a tom, and ran up to him, while he was still flopping. I was trying to get my boot on his neck so I could end it. It took a while (glad nobody caught it on video) When it was over the toms beard was just laying on the ground. I think I stepped on it whale he was flopping, and it pulled off. ants
What keeps it from fraying and falling apart? There is about a 1/2" of skin that holds the strands together and stays on the beard, when you remove it.

Yup, then I dip that skin end in salt and have never had a problem with the beard coming apart.

I have had a bunch of beards fall apart on me because I just tossed them on a shelf, and didn't do anything to preserve them.

Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk much like with the beard, you gotta salt the fleshy end.....just gotta be careful not to remove to much flesh otherwise the feathers will fall out. I usually nail them to a board fanned out and change the salt every few days as it will draw out moisture and will stop doing its job once its wet, so keep adding dry salt. Danno, haven't heard from him in quite a while now myself. That picture was from the past. Lot's of folks stopped visiting that old forum over the years. I wonder how he is doing as well?
