I did see one as a kid in Oklahoma. We were at a KOA camp site and it came in low across the sky but didn't completely burn up ...it hit and we saw the orange/ red in the sky where it struck...Well it was a mad house of people slamming car doors and starting engines...lol It wasn't far,relative terms, probably 10 miles or so...We stayed at camp and went to bed...Before we left, my Uncle  inquired about it. No one seemed to be able to find the impact area...lol  It was something to see though...us kids had nightmares ...We thought up enough stories to scare ourselves for a week...

Seen something several years ago just after 5 in the morning, what grow just described come down in Lake Ontario. Funny, I kept watching news and radio reports some time after. Nothing ever said about it.
