Doewhacker
This year I did a bit more clearing of mid size trees and left the top of my land unmowed in hopes of helping to provide some nesting habitat for Woodcock. The woodcock did nest and hatch and today on the way to my neighbors pond we came upon three separate Gouse hens with a whole bunch of hatchlings! All within a short ten minute walk, good thing my dogs are all trained and obedient because it surprised my son and I to see them. We leashed them up quickly and made it to the pond for some training. That is the first time I have seen Grouse that small and that many, I would guess there to have been somewhere near 30 young chicks, just old enough to fly. It has been so rewarding to have small changes work out, first the Woodcock and now the Grouse. All in my back yard!
grampy
So cool that you recognized what they needed and gave it to them. Now you are seeing the fruits of your labor, paying off for you and the birds. Good deal all around! A real success story!
