From what I've read, most whitetail biologist agree that a mature buck might travel up to 5mi away from his homebase at least once during the rut. Don't think anyone knows why they choose a specific path or direction or how long this journey takes, they are simply cruising for estrus does. A deer's nose works in phenomenal ways, but to think a buck's nose leads him to a hot doe more than a mile away might be stretching those smelling powers some.... Who knows for sure??
