When I was doing a lot of highway construction, you would be amazed how many deer get hung up in a simple 4' right of way fence along the highway. All of them that I saw were trying to jump the fence, hung up a foot and with the body weight making it over with a foot through the fence. No way for them to get it out. I've never seen one still alive but what a terrible way to go.

I saw quite a few fence skewered deer along the Wadsworth land in Geneseo back in the '80's and '90's. They eventually cut the spikes off (at least along the part next to the school) and that ended that.
