had an accident a few years ago. doing something similar. except the end closer to the tree fell first. hit my chainsaw out of my hand and then fell and hit my wife who was holding the ladder. Knocked her straight to the ground and was one of the scariest few seconds of my life. She ended up with a trip to the ER but just a badly bruised andkle and good rash and scar on her arm.

never again. I have a pole saw now. problem is for really high branches or anything thick. If it's anything over 3" or so up high I will call someone.

If the non-trunk end of the branch hits the ground first, odds are the butt end will punch you right off the ladder as seen in the videos.  Maybe it WON'T knock you off, maybe it'll just come up and whack you in the arm, leg etc.

Ironic as heck............For a couple months now I've been cruising some chainsaw/arborsites. 

I renewed my interest in cutting after replacing my old (but still in excellent shape) 026 with a new 261cm.  I've cleaned up a pile of downed trees and felled a few too (edit to add: done this winter) for friends and family.  

I have enjoyed reading all sorts of neat stuff on these other sites and stumbled onto this, just minutes ago.  It was posted earlier today by a professional tree surgeon:

"Yesterday we removed a 36” red oak in an older lady’s front yard. Ground the stump, nothing technical so no pics warranted. We were packing up around noon and the woman comes out and tells me her husband was killed removing a branch on that tree three years prior while working on a ladder. Yikes, I gave my condolences."

Weird huh?

A couple years ago I thought it would be a good idea to use my skidsteer to knock down an old dead pine tree and roll the root ball out at the same time. Put the bucket up and got it rocking pretty good when the top half snapped off and it fell butt first . Good thing that has a plate steel roof, if it was an open tractor I wouldn't be here now. Needed a bottle jack to try and press the dent out and its still not perfect, frankly its a good reminder not to be stupid.

I've known 2 homeowners killed by tree accidents; things can go wrong in a hurry.

36" tree 60'+ high. End that hit maybe 16" still, fractured where the upper part forked.

After it hit and I figured out what had happened, I'll admit it was a sobering experience about not thinking something through all that well.

those of us lucky to have the close calls and sobering experiencing should be the biggest advocates for safety. We were the lucky ones.
