Joined a club in Highmarket ny. How is the whitetail hunting there? I know it is in 6n. Just looking for some tips and advice. Thank you

Probably the meanest bunch of deer the state has to offer , watch your back ,they have developed a liking to human blood.

There is some quality fishing up there.  Some nice little trout streams. And the reservoir on the whetstone has some nice bass and tiger muskies. 

Never known or heard it to be great deer hunting.  Also some very good rabbit hunting years ago though.

I have never hunted that specific area, but you will do well to get the topomaps for the area and learn the major topography, and never go into the woods without a compass and the knowledge to get yourself back to your road. Lotsa big woods up there.

Good advice...I lost a couple of friends up there for about 4hrs once because they didn't take that advice and had no clue which way was out. If not for my gun shots and horn blowing from the road they would probably still be there.

I always carry gps and a compass for backup. Just looking for advice on where to look for deer.

Couldn't begin to tell ya. Hunted small game up there a lot and don't recall seeing many deer.

 Might want to make a scouting trip and talk to the locals. Lots and lots of state land and rugged country to hunt.

I hunt mad river land and I am drawn to the the northern woods. Very gratifying when you do get a deer.

If you don't have them you may want to start checking craigslist etc. for some snowshoes. They get some wicked snowstorms and lots of it up there.

Follow the east / west ridges, swamp borders and bottle necks, drive the area and look for neighboring open fields/ agriculture. Even if you find some corn/ etc. a mile or so away, it will affect you. There is no substitute for woods cruising: look for beech, black cherry, and lordy lordy, and oaks (rare up there probably). Wild apple trees can be a big draw: I prune and semi maintain a slew of them near me.
