Question on sound proofing

Who knows, maybe the sound won't bother the toms at all...

There was a time when I would not have believed that a gobbler would walk right up to a popup blind set up in the open, but they will... I have a hunting buddy in Florida who hunts with his recurve out of a custom popup blind, and he often sets up under cover of darkness within full view of a roosting tom. He kills his limit in Florida and Georgia every year, and most of his shots are under 15 yards.

They might think that the sound is the gobbler drumming. Judging by some of the Gawd-awful calling I have heard some hunters do and still kill turkeys, that is not out of the realm of belief.

In any case, when the gobbler gets within 50 or 75 yards of the decoy, it's time to stop calling, moving the decoy or whatever and get ready to make your shot.

Try glueing a peice of solid 1/2 - 3/4 styrofoam cut to size to the bottom of the frame enclose everything but the tires or will that make it to hi for the tires to hit the ground. Is that thing going to work in hi grass or leaves in the feild/woods? Just some ideas. Good luck.

I plan on leveling the area in the feld where I'm going to set up the decoy. So I'm not concerned about high grass. I may just try spraying on the foam directly onto the chassis near where the noise is coming from.

The noise you are hearing is coming from the motor and gearbox. The only way to have a quiet one is to replace the motor with brushless and use nylon gears in the gearbox. Then, you are only going to cut the noise most of the way down, it wont be 100% silent. You will most likely have to ditch that RC car and use a better model.

Update on DIY turkey decoy:

I enclosed the chassis with 1/4" cork board on all sides. It cuts down on the noise a little but not much. Tried using Styrofoam but it would not stick well. Also used a broken aluminum arrow as the post to hold the turkey up. Going to be hot gluing a quick tripod release from a scavenged tripod to attach my Midland XTC action camera to the front. Also spray painted it with camo paint. Here are some pics for now.

I will post a new video when it's completed.

If you can take the cover apart, try adding some of that foam inside that they use in gun cases, kinda looks like an egg carton. That might help a bit. Try getting something on the underside too, alot of noise may be coming through the plastic under there.

Update on use of motorized turkey decoy from NYS DEC:

I am inquiring as to whether or not one can use a motorized turkey decoy while hunting for spring or fall turkey in NYS. Essentially what I am referring to is affixing a turkey decoy on top of the chassis of child’s battery operated remote controlled car that is used while hunting to mimic lifelike movement for purposes of luring gobblers into shotgun or bow range. My research on this topic has revealed differing opinions on its legality in NYS. I would appreciate clarification on this issue.

Below is information received from DEC Law Enforcement:

The decoy can move but, it can not have any sound:

(7) A permittee may not hunt turkey with the aid of an electronic calling or amplification device during an open turkey season. Further, a permittee may not use an electronic calling or amplification device to locate turkeys at any time during an open turkey season.
