  1. Yes, March traditionally is good for at least one ugly snowfall of sloppy-gloppy heavy snow. And don't count February out yet either. However, if this should continue, I have to wonder what the bug situation will be next summer. Prolonged cold nasty winters are one of the controls on the insect population.
  2. First thing I'm going to do is set it up in the livingroom and see how it does with the cat. That should give me an idea of the quality of pictures and whether or not I should buy another one. I probably won't be actually setting it outdoors until next spring. I want to get some critter pictures down around the creek and the swamp and right now there is nothing to look at but snow covered ice.
  3. A bunch of years ago, I dragged a buck through about 10" of snow from on top the hill all the way back to my house (a little over a mile). The next day I noticed that another deer had followed the entire drag right down to the house. Its tracks never came out of the drag impression in the snow until it got about 30 yards from my back door. I can't imagine what was on its mind ...... something to eat maybe? By the way that hasn't been the only time something like that has happened, but usually they don't follow the drag that far.
  4. Sorry Bubba, but I think we have to suspend this conversation. It seems that everyone is getting tired of seeing it here. It's funny how they keep coming in here to watch though.....lol. It's kind of like the preacher who spent days looking at pornography so he could lecture against it the following Sunday.....ha-ha.
  5. In the words of that great American, Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?" My gosh people, about once or twice a year we have to get these threads about how terrible it is that members get a bit passionate about their opinions and occasionally step over the line of civility. What the heck is it that has made us so thin-skinned. Do you all think for a minute that just because this forum has a hunting theme that people don't take their opinions very seriously? In many of these discussions, we are talking about the core beliefs that hunters hold. People take their hunting and their views on it very personal. Sure, just like any other mode of communications, people on forums let their emotions show when getting into some of the more thorny discussions. And don't think for a moment that sportsmen and women don't have some very deep-rooted beliefs about issues regarding their outdoor activities (at least I would hope they do). Frankly, I would be more concerned if we didn't. Sometimes it's good to see that hunters, trappers and fishermen can still get a bit passionate about things regarding our activities and the rules that govern them. Maybe some have been beat down so thoroughly that they can't muster a bit of excitement about subjects that should be important to us. That concerns me more than the occasional flare up of tempers. My ol' buddy Bubba and I get into it when it comes to our B/O arguments, but through it all, there are legitimate points and counterpoints being aired by both. We both feel very strong about our positions and most likely will never change the minds of each other, but like it or not we are both forced to look at the position of the other. And I do believe that it makes others think about the issues also. Certainly more than they would if we just clammed up everytime it looked like things were getting a bit heated. My gosh to listen to some of these replies on this thread , it sounds like you all would like everyone to immediately cease discussion if it looks like there is any chance that it might be a bit controversial and get heated. Is that what we want here .... everyone nodding in false agreement with each other? Frankly, I already know what we agree with each other on. I want to talk about those things where we maybe don't see eye-to-eye. That's where discussions need to take place. And those are the ones most likely to become a bit contentious. I additionally will say that each and every one of you has the power to control forum content right in your hand. It's called a mouse and it is the mechanism by which you execute your choice to be exposed to some of these disagreements or not. If you really are a fan of censorship, here is the thing that you can easily use to implement it. But you all already know that, don't you?
  6. Yup ..... That's an entirely different question with an entirely different answer.
  7. Now that's funny. I can just picture people screaming and whining in disgust and terror and diving under the seats as a spray of spit and snot showers over them. I would probably pay to see that ... but only from a distance.
  8. I've got to admit that the NYS CWD experience turned out to be a whole lot different than I had been led to believe from reports out of the west. It has always been portrayed as a devastating disease that once present in the wild population, swept through the deer herd rapidly devastating the population as it went. Our experiences so far really haven't even come close to being all that devastating. Perhaps there was a bit of sensationalization and over-statement going on with some of these reports. As far as carcass piles being a potential new source of CWD, I was assuming that the heads (brains) would also be part of a carcass dump. I guess my comment was based on the report of "taxidermy remains" being the suspected culprit in our state outbreak.
  9. There you go ....... I've finally arrived into the new millenium. I placed my first internet product order ...... lol. I'm a bit slow about trusting some of these things, and I figured today was the day. I did my research, and finally decided on the Moultrie L-50 as the "white flash" trail cam that had a good chance of supplying adequate quality for an affordable (for me) price. I went to hayneedle.com and got it for $69.98 with no tax and free shipping. It was the "no tax and free shipping" that sealed the deal for me. So now we will see how that all works out for me and if I am happy with the picture quality and this internet ordering experience, I'll be looking to get at least one more.
  10. Kevin- What make and model was the camera that took the flash picture on the right? That is a fantastic picture and I am investigating a purchase of some white-flash trail cams sometime before next spring. That kind of quality is exactly what I am looking for.
  11. Really Bubba? .... Do you really feel like a victim now? ..... lol. By the way, thanks for the free psycho-analysis. It was amusing. Look, if you would just calm down a bit and try reading some actual numbers on the subject (I even supplied you the link), you might just begin to understand where I am coming from. It might just save you a lot of ranting and raving and a fair degree of embarrassment from that goofy sounding reply above.
  12. It's always good to keep a little perspective on our hunting. While hunting has always been a huge chunk of who I am, it is always good to be reminded that in the greater picture of life, it really isn't all that critical that it always lives up to expectations. But then, thinking about what the original poster may have had in mind, it was probably more about a statistical reaction to the season than a philosophical view of it ..... lol.
  13. Aw ..... kwitcherbitchun
  14. Actually, unlike politics, hunting safety does have a documented "right or wrong" side to it as shown at: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00044112.htm And so when someone advocates things that are contrary to safe hunting practices, I do feel that it is important to not allow those things to stand unchallenged. Of course there are some that may not care for that kind of thing, but then that's not my concern.
  15. Lol ....... you've got a point there. That definitely is a win and a blessing. That's kind of like saying any time I wake up and can get out of bed, it has to be a great day.
  16. And then there is the situation with the other branches of government that has to be dealt with if that once in a lifetime mythical candidate were to run and actually win. Politicians derive their power from spending, and darn few of them will ever go along with extreme cuts. We the constituents are the ones who promote this kind of financial suicide, and the politicians knowing votes are on the line, respond in exactly the way you would expect. There is very little that a president can do all by himself. And also, let's understand that financial spending responsibility is only one facet of our economic woes. Probably the biggest issue that threatens our economy is the fact that we don't make anything anymore. Yeah, we have some great insurance companies, and pizza joints, but the backbone of the American economy has always been production. We can talk about how brainy we are and how we can come up with all this creativity and innovation and support ourselves with higher class occupations, but while nobody has been watching, we have exported those too. I remember back back about 20 years ago, I was requested by my boss to go over to Taiwan and hand over our technology and processes to engineers of that foriegn branch. The request was to make them a highly specialized engineering staff capable of doing MY job. I refused, but they found another goat to do the job. I also know that others were requested to do the same from other areas of the company. All I saw after that was cancelled projects and some minor support for products designed and engineered overseas. I know we were not the only company to export these kinds of jobs. So now we are in the state that could have been predicted by anyone who was paying attention. I have said for many decades that if we have to compete with third world countries, we are going to have to live like the people of those third world companies. In spite of what we like to think, we really are not that much smarter than those guys ..... lol. Building the infr-structure, education and technical know-how of foriegn subsidiaries simply built the road to economic doom for the American worker and his family. So as I said..... we don't make anything anymore and I have yet to hear one politician address this export of technology and jobs. Nobody has any ideas on how to reverse some of that? They don't even want to talk about it. Our economy will never jump back in control until one of these brainiacs shows a little interest in such an obvious deficiency in our ability to create and manufacture. We cannot all be Silicon Valley moguls and bank CEOs. We've got a huge gob of workers who have watched high paying jobs slide overseas. So where is this mental marvel going to come from to pilot this country? Who do we have that can work the miracles required to bring jobs back to the U.S.? Well, it sure isn't Obama, and I sincerely doubt that any of the other candidates are capable of such a feat either. So yes, once again we are going to have to hold our nose and cast a ballot. But anyway you look at it, there isn't a president today or in the future who has the backbone, forsight, and intelligence to reverse the foriegn stranglehold on our economy. It just might turn out that the NYS lottery is your only chance at survival .....lol.
  17. Oh, I don't know about that. I had one season where I broke my bow and lost a good chunk of the remainder of the season finding, buying and rigging up a new one. That wasn't too great a season. I also had a brother-in-law that broke his leg in the first week of bow season a few years back.I don't think he thought that was too good of a season. This year, after a windy, drenching beginning couple weeks of the bow season, I contracted an eye infection that kind of deleted the rest of the bow season. I guess I would be hard pressed to call this bow season one of my favorites. And as far as I'm concerned, if I ever have a season where I don't have at least one good opportunity at taking a deer, I'm going to have to wonder what the heck I'm doing out there. Also, I might add that if successfully taking a deer is not the purpose of the hunt, I have to wonder why we lug all these different weapons afield when we could just carry a camera and a lunch and have a great ol' time.....lol......which by the way I often do between seasons, but I don't call it hunting.
  18. Yeah Bub ...... it always seems to get a rise out of you, old or not .... lol. And by the way, I don't think anybody has ever said that B/O is a cure-all. Have you been imagining that someone said that it was effective in the dark? Sure enough by golly, you're right .... it doesn't work worth a damn in the dark. By the way, if you had been paying attention at all, you would have noticed that I did not bring up the subject of B/O but was merely responding to another reply that did (as you can always count on me doing everytime people be-little the documented effectiveness of it). The fact is that you have devoted quite a few replies toward keeping the B/O segment of this thread going, haven't you?

    Hunting frog's

Yes, I have hunted frogs when I was a kid, and they are delicious. I also had frog legs down in an Alabama restaurant a few decades ago. I also used to "harvest" (....lol) snapping turtles. My Uncle used to make some great turtle soup. Tried to make turtle burgers too ...... Don't ever do that. It was just like little chopped up rubber bands.
  20. Here's the problem ..... Take a look at the list of challengers. They're all a bunch of loser-crackpots. So in the end we are forced to choose the lesser of the two evils. What kind of way is that to choose the leader of the country? There is something very wrong when the career of politics only draws the corrupt and mentally deficient. And then when presented with all these idiots, we are told to choose one. ...... What a joke. Except it's not really very funny. Sure, when it comes to Obama, the choice is simple. He represents the absolute extreme of the philosophy that I believe has ruined this country. But let's face it, the alternatives are not much of a prize either. No wonder the American voter gets a bit confused at times. We're always given a no-win choice.
  21. So, what makes anyone think that that's not someone's dog? Sure looks like a dog to me. I didn't read about any DNA results ..... lol.
