  1. Shot one a few years ago with about 15 minutes left in the season. Hadn't shot a long beard all month and was on my way home at about 11 with my tail between my legs. Ended up seeing a tom a few miles from home, got in front of him and the rest is history. He was with a hen too so it can happen.
  2. I completely agree with you. Seems like most things in nature go through a cycle of ups and downs. I think you need more then a few rough years to really make a decision like that. I know only 3 years ago the hunting was HOT around me and it was hard not to find a gobbler, and had been like that for a while. Keeping in mind that the landscape/habitat hasn't changed a bit in that time, predations seems to be like it always was (from what I've seen in the woods), and hunter numbers aren't any worse then they've always been.
  3. Hahaha! All I can picture is an ugly little hen with a big curly gentleman's stache
  4. That's pretty interesting, I've never heard of that before but seems like a good idea. Be sure to show us some pics
  5. Thank you everyone. She was proud as a peacock that's for sure! Lol
  6. I brought my girlfriend out this morning and we had an awesome hunt. The birds didn't respond to well first thing but within an hour we found ourselves with over ten birds heading our way. Long story short we had two jakes go into the woods at about 65 yards and come right back out at about 35. And she dropped the hammer on one good! Congrats Sarah on your first turkey!
  7. In my experiences birds seem to like to roost up high and head downhill after fly down. Keep that in mind
  8. I'm a little skeptical of jake decoys, I've seen jakes run off toms many times. But I've heard a lot of success stories with them too so who knows.
  9. Haha I love the one about to violate his decoy!
  10. That is certainly more of an understandable reason.
  11. I've gotten that excuse too.. I don't want you to shoot my livestock. Honestly if I can't tell the difference between a fat angus and a thunder chicken I shouldn't be in the woods. But sadly there's people who can't, which hurts the rest of us... On to the next piece!
  12. @HuntOrBeHunted I used a fox pro spitfire with the coyote locator (sounds like a bunch of dogs singing away) and mixed in a few howls from my primos mouth call to add volume and realism. Seems to me every time I hear dogs talking there's always that one long howl that sticks out so I tried to replicate that.
  13. Thank you very much everyone. And to lawdwaz I'm shooting a howa 1500 with an axiom stock chambered in 223 with 55 gr hornadys. Also I have a Nikon p223 mounted on top.
  14. We've hunted pretty hard sense deer season ended and haven't had much luck but that changed last night. As soon as we stepped out of the truck at the farm we were hunting we could here a bunch of dogs talking about 400 yards across the field from where we were. Set up, called for about 5 minutes and had 4 come running down the hill to us. Unfortunately even after getting drilled in the shoulder this guy took off running so my attention was on him not the other 3 dogs but I'm still plenty happy with the results.
  15. I've had the chance to do a few stand here and there. Only success was a red fox but he won that battle. Long story but to sum it up I missed. Is anyone else getting into the dogs at all? What calls/setups are working right now? And would love to see some pics if anyone seals the deal!
  16. Thanks alot Dan! And thanks mxsmitz, a lot of good info! I plan on taking some long rides after work to learn the area and the landscape.
  17. I've recently moved to Utica (new hartford) and was just looking for some input on the area, how the hunting is, or just any general suggestions. I am an avid deer and waterfowl hunter and love to small game and coyote hunt later in the year. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
  18. Hahaha your dirty Irish redneck!
  19. I agree that it's probably operator error but I would pattern your gun just to make sure you don't have any holes in your pattern. And if you do try a different choke/shell combo. Also what I've noticed a lot of people do (me included) when it comes time too shoot is they don't get down on their gun fully and end up shooting high, and sometimes crippling birds. Make sure your cheek is tight and you have a good sight picture of your bead and the bird. Good luck!
  20. Had a great hunt this morning. Birds were a little picky but we made out well. And there sure was plenty of them! And this is a first for me. Brad shot this bird decoying at about 10 yards and completely took his head off! Good morning in the goose blind
  21. Unfortunately I'm not in these pictures but a couple nice bucks on the ground. Congrats to brad and my old man.
  22. Can't help you with the land situation but what I can suggest is going onto DECs website and printing off some permissions slips and bringing them too the farmers. Both of you sign them and it's proof that you have permission too be there and also says that they are not liable for anything that happens to you on thier land. Great for both parties! It's helped me secure spots in the past. Good luck
  23. I'm almost sure victory mills is southeast zone. I'm pretty sure the line follows rt 29 through Schuylerville towards Saratoga but I'm not positive so don't hunt according to that, I don't want to get you in trouble! Keep bugging DEC, that's how I got my info because the lines are extremely hard to understand. If you do enough poking around I'm sure someone (maybe the officer that patrols the area) can give you a sure answer so you know youre legal. Let me know what you find out
