I did google it and like I said it doesnt look anything like a cranefly to me. It also doesnt look like it is flying. Never seen any insect flying with its legs sticking out all over the place like they are in his trail cam pic.. The legs in the picture are to think for a cranefly in my opinion a well. I ty my own flies for fly fishing and study insect all the time to recreate them and I will stick with the stickbug lol. You know we need to get the deer season under way when we are trying to figure out what bug is in that picture lol.

Larry I can relate to the ( i wish I made that call). When I finally did it made it pretty clear I wasnt going to let this crap fly anyore. I think this in fact was one of this guys deciding factor in leaving as well. He has no land and been trespassing for more years than I care to think. Dude is selling everything, hunting clothes, guns all of it in a yard sale. He wont get a dollar from me. Is it even legal to sell firearms in a lawn sale? Who cares he out. Im am pumped up for the future of deer hunting in this area. He is the last of the outlaws that I can think of. 1 other moved out last year and one quit hunting a few years before that.

That's kind of the deal isn't it? There really is no reason why the rifle should not be used except for the fact that it would make some of the crazies that we have all seen afield, effective at even greater distance .... lol. That can be a scary thought. Yes it is a scary thought. I think I just might put armour plated walls up at camp and stay inside on opening weekend. Maybe a big old stobe light hooked to my head lol. I wonder how many yahoos would run out and buy a rifle to hunt one weekend out of the year. Hopefully none.
-
I think the legs are too skinny for a crane fly compared to the body size. This pic isnt clear but it looks similar to the stick bug.

I have to agree with you Doc. I have tasted bear meet and didnt care for it at all. Been asked to go on a few bear hunts in the past and did go but just in hopes of seeing one and tagging a deer. Its pretty hard for a novice bear hunter to get a bear in bow range let alone see one in NY. Of course unless your in old forge camping or something lol.

I looked up pictures of european crane fly and it looks like to me that thing is too white and too big. An adult is only 1 1/2 inches and is darker in color. Could be the camera view but it doesnt look like one to me.

Very interesting so I thought I would throw some calculations your way. Deer harvest on average past few years have averaged around 222000. Of that 222000 15 % have been bow kills on average and 8.5% have been muzzleloader kills on average. Seeing the current length of bow season versus muzzleloader season your statement would be hard to argue. I do feel the DEC has a tough job on there hands. I also wonder if Im the only guy that hunts in 6k and 7m that has seen a decline in number of deer sightings. I know here at home I have had trail cameras out for atleast a month and all I have seen is a lone doe and a doe with 2 fawns and have several pictures. Deer sign has diminished greatly in my area here and I can remember days of driving by Dougleston manner and counting 100 plus deer out in there fields and past few years if you see 3 out there. A contribution of some harsh winters and an increasing coyote population has to be contributing to that but they did give out alot of doe permits for a few years in a row and with all the local guys including myself passing on younger bucks and taking does I think this proposal does will not only contribute to over populated areas but the DEC will be able to manage the underpopulated areas by regulating doe permits. Now in 7m there a few camps around the area of mine and I do know that there was a few years in a row that between 4 camps that hunt the hill Im on between all of us we had received 43 doe permits each year and then throw the added either sex tag on to that number. ALso we are surrounded by thousands of acres of state land. SO throw all those permits in as well. So what happened in that particular area is the deer population got decimated. Then the dec lowered doe permit availability to 1 tag with a medium chance. The state hunters population dropped way way off as well. Now the past 2 years we have seen a slow increase of deer numbers with alot more bigger class bucks. I raised this because there might be areas in 7m for example that are private land and overpopulated. So my point is how exacally does the DEC manage such areas and keep everyone happy. Its impossible unless they break it down even further than just a WMU. Now you take some other things into consideration as how many deer and lets say the city of Cortland for giggles and the urban deer population in it. Urban deer numbers are increasing and the back 40 are decreasing. This is going to be a never ending yoyo effect. With the funding and number of DEC employees decreasing I think we are goining to see some panic attemps at managing our wildlife coming our way to keep hunters happy. With the gun season being the major percentage of deer kills they in my opinion will not mess with gun season very much as it has to be there greatest source of income so that leads manipulation of bow and muzzleloader seasons and of course the ever debated crossbow.

3 or 4 beers? There goes the budget down the hatch lol.

What do you think it is cause I have no idea? Alien invasion? Or is that a mountain lion lol.

Glad this came up I have been looking for quite awhile to see where this was at. Should be interesting. I would rather take my rifle than the shotgun anyday but not sure I want to see some of the yahhos with one in their hand.

Got the email myself as well. What I got out of this is they want to be able to manage the deer herd and try not to make a big stink amongst hunters with the buck tag. In this way they can manage doe harvest better via applying for dmp for each wmu. It will be interesting to see what areas will get permits and which ones will not. Also if landowners will still get a guaranteed doe permit for their area as well. Oh and lets not forget it is also a source for income. Which leads to another question of how many are going to just take the buck tags and say the heck with the doe tags. Like I said before although I dont like spending money it is a rather small amount to get a doe permit if it stays at 10 dollars to enjoy an extra opportunity to put meat in the freezer. Now that Im writing this I also wonder what it will do to our deer population as well. If guys forgoe the doe permits and start taking younger class bucks will our doe herd explode and older class bucks see a decline. Or am I just reading this all wrong? ONe other question I have is do they currently charge for nuisance control permits? If not I think they should because we will see an increase in the amount given out if indeed hunters forego getting the doe permits. Be interesting to say the least how all this plays out.

I find it quite interesting as well. The only thinng that comes to my mind is proper amounts of lime being applied ahead of time. Ag department made it pretty clear to me that lime will also sweeten up plants and without the proper amounts would lead to a bitter tasting foodplot and I would be wasting time and money if I skimped on the lime. They even claimed if you spread lime over other grasses growing wild in the area it would get teh deer on it as well. All I know is the first food plot I put in I didnt know any better and just limed according to the directions on the bag. Deer never touched a single one of them. Had 3 out and 3 different seed blends. Did a soil test the following year and I was very suprised to see it still called for 3 tons more per acre. 3 tons later and alot of hard work and the deer ate them up. All I started out with is basically 3 small test plots to learn from mistakes and to find a good seed blend for a 1 acre plot. Glad I went the route I did and this year Im set to put down forage oats in august. Want to put in a annual in this plot so if I have dormant weeds that come back in the spring I will have another year to battle them before a perenial goes in. Looks good so far no weed growth in 6 weeks. Lime is where its at in my opinion.

Thanks guys I am really excited about this. Deer population here is not all that great and this guy moving out and some qdm will only help. Im on the salmon river so more than likely like all the other places around here it will be an out of state fisherman who ends up with it for a camp. Land value is higher than the local economy can handle but those out of staters eat it up. It sure will be nice sitting in my treestand and not have to think about where or what antics this guy is up to know. Food plot is done and ready for seed in august. Will be nice to know that all that work didnt go into a selfish sob's freezer.

My grandfather always told me it is not how many pennies you make an hour its how many pennies you save. I owned a credit card once in my 20's. Found no use for it at all. If I couldnt afford it I didnt need it. Im 39 years old my house is paid off, no credit card bills, have payments on the worst investment known to mankind, vehicle and just the normal household bills. It was a great feeling making that last house payment. Pay whatever extra you guys can each month on it wether its 10 bucks or 100 it really cuts it down. Now to just get my kids through college. Cash is king, live on credit and the government owns you all the more.

Im sure some of you guys can imagine or have a neighbor who is the outlaw of the neighborhood, you know the guy who has his wife get a license and his son get a license and then throw out a pile of apples in a field that borders the 2 acres they own that is posted and they have no permission to be on, you know the guy that shoots the doe with 2 fawns and all the while the fawns are running in circles wondering what just happened they reload their muzzleloader and shoots one of the fawns then reloads again and sits for another hour or so when the last of the 2 fawns pop their head out and finishes that one off too. You know the guy that you find sitting in your treestand and call the DEC on him yet again. You know the guy who gets busted for poaching at night in the very same field after losing his hunting license for 5 years and gets that slap on the wrist and a small fine. Well fellow ethical hunters there is a 4 SALE sign in his front yard. Age is catching up heart attack got him to thinking and the A-hole is moving to Florida on a permanent basis. It truly is great news especially since I have many pictures on my trail cam of a doe with 2 fawns hanging out in that very same field. If I had the money I would buy the place and burn it to the ground.

And the state can layoff as many employees as it deems fit to meet the critical needs of saving the state money right, naww the libs will just spend it on something else like new elevators in a correctional facility that they shut down a few weeks later, or heck lets purchase a whole bunch of new patrol cars to replace perfectly good ones or hell lets spend a few weekends on the taxpayers dollars because we are in a deadlock over what the state vegetable or dog should be. Lets shutdown rest areas so tractor trailer drivers or vacationers can pull off to get some rest instead of driving through exhaustion and risking their lives and yours and then turn around and repave sections of 81 that didnt need it at all. Geesh while they are at it they should spend thousands debating the rerouting of 81 through syracuse for what was it 60 billion dollars or some stupid number like that. Hey why not layoff some of our state workers then give out state grants to middle aged low income non working individuals to go back to college. I can go on for along time with this. I truly believe they have no clue at all and dont really gives a rats ass as long as there pockets are lined and all there buddies think they are a class act. I am very disapointed and it truly saddens me to think I am raising my kids with a generation that gives them no reason to become anything other than a mooching bum. A country that extends unemployment to 3 years, gives out cell phones to the welfare, free college loans to non working class all the while laying off current employees, child tax credits heck the more you have the more you get right, free education and job placement to convicts when they get out, heres how I see a great life for an 18 year old high school grad. Get a simple minded seasonal job for the summer, get layed off, collect unemployment for 3 years, and then from there they have multiple choices as how they want to spend the rest of their life. Path 1 during the 3 years of collecting unemploment start having children out of wedlock, apply for wic, heap, medicaid any public assistance you can, after a few years of getting 10000 dollars back on your annual taxes for the child tax credits apply for a grant to get your college paid for and go back to school and get your education and then ponder whether you truly want a job and get one or just run around and tell all your friends I graduated from college and Im smart. Path 2 graduate form school, or maybe not and start a life of crime so you can get a free ride to jail, get free room, clothes, food, entertainement and best of all an education, do your time get out with a job that you had been placed in, spend a year or two doing that and then when that comes to an end you get yet another couple choices to make, unemployment for 3 years or commit another crime go spend a few more years in jail for free. Path number 3 realize when you graduate that you where raised with great morals and values and pursue a higher education, graduate from college, start your career, start your family and continue to pass down the sense of pride the values and morals your parent taught you. The first lady made a statement a few years back that it was the first time she was truly proud of being and american, well first lady I can tell you its the first time I have been on the fence deciding wether Im proud of being an american or truly embarresed. When does bow season start?????? NOt soon enough for me to escape this government for a few hours at a time.

Well thats all good and makes sense but theres only one big problem to your solution!!!!! We have not had any polititians worthy to vote for. None. I dont think there is a republican with big enough cahonies to step up in a state that is messed up like it is. Yeah we get a joker or 2 here and there but they have not impressed me either. I truly believe our biggest problem lies in NYC and as long as that place is reconized as NY and all the liberal bs it entails the rest of the state is going to suffer. Try to google anything with the letters NY in it on the web. You get 100 NYC search results and one state search result. The bottom line is we have no one who qualifies in my book to bail this state out of its own demise. But with all that said I revert back to your post and sit here and still wonder why we all complain so much and yet we keep electing Dems to office. Oh wait NYC.

36 acres next to me got divided into 3 lots 2 at 11 acres one at 14. All sold within a few months at 10,000 an acre. Could not believe it. All of it was undeveloped and only the areas close to the road could be developed as the rest is in a deep valley thought I would never see it sell fo that much but it did. Of course I am on one of the most famous rivers in the country. All 3 new owners built fishing camps on them. All 3 owners from out of state.

Well guys tonight watching a hunting show they gave this link to people looking to take a hunter safety course. Although in NY you still need to take a class by a certified instructor to get the certificate this is a good start to get them on the right course. http://www.huntercourse.com/usa/newyork/

OUr camp chain or I should say chains are up always. If we are there or not. Except for day after all season have ended till spring there isnt anyone there much. Seasonal road but we do take the snowmobiles in a few times in the winter for an overnighter. Lucky for us we have a few camps around us as well and we all keep an eye out of each others property. It even confuses them with the chain up cause many times they have said to us, your driveway is always full of truck tracks but the gate is always up when the heck do you guys hunt. lol We allow no access for 1 basic reason, to keep the guys out who hunt one weekend a year and blast every round they can at a running deer with no regard to other hunters or the respect for what they are shooting at. It ruins it for the guys that are ethical but I dont have the time to weed through the yahoos and the ethical hunters. Tried it and wont go down that road ever again. When your sitting 20 feet up a tree and a bullet hits about 2 feet above your head you kind of have second thoughts about who you want on your land.

Hes is going to be a whopper in a few years. Some big ears on that thing too lol. Hope he makes it through another gun season for you.

Thanks for this post I have never heard of this stuf before until I read it. I was setting up trail cameras and I found a bunch of plants that look pretty darn close to this stuff behind my house. Took a bunch of pictures and will be calling the hotline. Some of these things have to be 10 feet tall. There is just enough detail on the plants to make me wonder if it is a hogweed and then theres just enough to make me think it is. The leafs are not as broad as they are on DEC's pictures but everything else seems to look the same. Will let you guys know the outcome. I live on the Salmon River to boot and its within 30 yards of the river bank. Keep ya posted.

Filled up today in Liverpool 3.57 a gallon. 3.62 with a credit card. It was on the news last night that (wish I caught his name) a polititian that is rasing a stink over the gas pricing structure in NY. His big complaint was how fast they stations raise there price but how long it takes them to lower it versus other states. He stated that it NY is 2 weeks later than any other state and he is investigating why. I always thought that it was a catch 22. A station orders gas at say 3.00 a gallon and the next day the price goes up to 3.50 so they take advantage and raise the price Of what they already bought and make a greater profit off it. Now when they buy gas at 3.50 and the price drops the next day they are not going to lower there price till the tanks are empty or they lose money. Maybe NY should put a cap on the size of their holding tanks and not allow the stations to raise the price of gas purchsed at a cheaper price. I dont like the high prices anymore than the next guy but after a quick math lesson form one of my kids today she had to ask me why do people get so upset over say a 20 cent difference. Had to chuckle when she said think about it dad if you get 20 gallons of fuel that 4 bucks more. You spent alot more than 4 dollars on stuff that you didnt need and never complained once. Oh boy I think I got a future senator on my hands.

When I first started out bow hunting many moons ago There were bow shops all over the place. Not a single one I would call a Pro shop either. A few things that pop to mind about them. First one I went too was recomended by many friends. I bought my first bow and had them set it up. Not really knowing any better at the time I dropped of the bow and well they set it up. What boggles me is they did it all with out knowing my draw length or even were to set my peep sight to fit me. Picked it up a few days later and practiced and practiced with it. Couldnt group it, had a hard time anchoring it you name it. I thought I was the worst archer ever. Not knowing any better I thought it was me and just kept shooting till I got better with it. Next season took it back there another guy looked at it and could not believe I could even group with it. Draw length way off peep set wrong arrows to short you name it it was wrong. Cost me alot to have him set it up right with no regards to the fact they were the ones who did it. Never went back there again. Next new bow a couple years later I went to a different shop and it basically turns out I was a guinea pig for all the new gadgets on the market and you have to have this and that. Shoot these arrows blah blah blah. Another shop I went to to just get arrows from has to be the best story of them all. Back then I was shooting 70 plus pounds plus I have long arms, 30 inch draw length and the shop said he didnt have the arrows in the proper size in stock I wanted and to come back in two days he would have the right ones fletched up and ready to go. So 2 days later I go back and heres a dozen new arrows sitting all pretty in a box. I get home and start to screw in a field point in one arrow when I notice something funny. The insert seem to have a a pretty darn thick shaft around it. What I found upon inspection was a double walled arrow. I call the guy and he said well I couldnt get the arrow shaft size you needed and had to cram a smaller arrow inside of another one to get the stiffness and weight right. Needless to say those got returned. Sure wish I had a bowhunting mentor in those days. Next new bow I bought and had setup wasnt much of a pleasure either. Decided at this point I pretty much knew everything I needed to get me on target but wanted to switch to a release. Guy sets the bow up and took every critical measures to get it spot on for me. He does the test firing on the indoor range first to make sure its good. Clips the release on and while drawing back it fires, dude looks at me like what the hell just happened. He does the same thing again. Im chuckling to myself casue I know its him hitting the release. Then I get to thinking if this dude doesnt know how to shoot a bow how can he be working on one. He turns the bow over to me and the draw length is too short. He takes it back and while putting it in the bow vise the vise explodes my bow blows up and Im ripped. New bow and its gone. They proceed to want to put new limbs on it and I said no way take that bow of the shelf and I will go elswhere. Mind you this was alot of years ago and I was barely 20 and stupid as well. After that last deal I decided to buy any book or any video I could find for setting up my own bows the right way. Bought the proper tools, a cable bow vise, fletching tools and do everything myself from there on out. It is not hard to do at all. Just a few basics things to it. Annual maintence items and I probably saved hundreds of dollars doing it myself. I have a few friends and family that bring their bows to me to work on now as well. I really feel if a person doesnt want to do his own work or feel comfortable doing it themselves they should atleast know the basics of setting up a bow so they know the PRO shop is doing things right. You may struggle thinking its you when indeed its how the bow was setup. That shop not knowing to lower the peep site is sad. I would drive 3 hours to get to a better one before I let someone who didnt know what they are doing touch it. To many variables that can go wrong at any time. Not to mention we owe it to the game we pursue to take no chances on the equipment we use to harvest them. Theres my 8 cents (inflation)

Interesting this topic came up. I have 3 kids 16, 13 and 11. 16 year old is my duaghter and she has always been on the fence wether she would actually like to hunt or not. She has no ill feelings towards hunters or hunting, just doesnt think she could pull the trigger. Fine and I can respect that, however she does go out with me quite a bit just to sit in a blind or still hunt, she loves to do all the deer calling and rattling when she is with me. The expressions on her face when she get a deer to come in from her doings is rewarding enough, never pulled the trigger when she is with me either to respect her feelings, she does help butcher every deer I have ever shot and actually like doing that part. The 11 year old has been out with me and he just has zero desire as he has no patients and can not sit still through a cartoon let alone hours in the field. The few times He has gone out with me he made it a point to scare the turkeys away or the deer away. I dont know where he gets that from at all. Like most Im from a long line of huntersand he is the first boy in the family to not like the sport at all. So now her I am at the 13 year old, with the same exact problem, plays hockey, baseball, football. He gets excited about hunting season and goes out with me every chance he can. He has seen every aspect of it and enjoys it all. Now it might be somewhat of my own doing but I have always preached when one of the kids makes a commitment they follow through with it till the end. So everytime a hunter ed course opens up he is not available to spend the time and is disapointed. Last year I was taken back a bit to see there is no other way to get even part of the ed course in online. Not the choice I would prefer as there nothing that can replace a hands on but when we live in a fast paced got to have it, got to do it, need it right now world I was rather shocked. I personally would love to see a course offered in our school for those interested, volunteer hunter ed instructor making a visit once a year. Any thoughts on this or how to implement it?
