  1. I have a Scent-Lok bag for my outer clothes. I put my inner clothes in a big tote.
  2. The DEC says it urges bowhunters to set their bows aside and mentor a youth. I don't have anyone old enough to mentor, and there's no way in hell I'm staying home that weekend.
  3. I am all for new hunter recruitment, but I think there will be a couple problems. 1: The shooting will send the deer into the parallel dimension that they vanish into during regular season. I think you'll see an overall reduction in harvest during the rest of archery season, and end up with a lot of frustrated bow hunters. 2: You've got novice gun hunters in the woods, mixed in with bow guys in full camo. Granted, they are supposed to be mentored, but I don't think it's a good combo. Why not do the youth season the weekend before regular opens? That way the kids get their chance, and the bow guys get their season without having a bunch of scared deer and interruption from gun hunters. I know I'm going to end up kicking at least a couple guys off my land during the youth hunt. It doesn't take much to mess up a bowhunt, and the deer take a while to settle down after all the shooting and sudden presence of people in the woods. Again, I'm all for the youth hunt, but I think the timing is really stupid. How many guys are going to take junior out in the woods, and shoot the deer themselves? I know most of us are honest, but I wonder how many abuse the youth hunts?
  4. Never did I or anyone else say that killing a deer makes one a great hunter. Piss off.
  5. ..............And your rebuttal, NFA?
  6. LOL. Tell us how you really feel, Doe. It's QUITE entertaining.
  7. My watch or my phone. I hate not bein able to tell the time.
  8. NFA-ADK- New hunters need to have shooting opportunities in order to remain interested. Newbies are not going to stay interested if they can't harvest deer, period. Were you a trophy hunter when you started? Did you pass up 1.5's? If so, give yourself a big pat on the back, because apparently you feel you accomplished something. Sure, seasoned hunters may understand not having as many opportunities while the supposed benefits from AR develop. (I think AR is bunk, but that is besides the point) But newbies will just walk away, and that is a problem. I think it's a huge loss for us to lose hunter numbers, no matter what the reason. Something that is trivial to you, may be a deal breaker for someone else. Go to another state, really? Wow.
  9. I just talked to Officer Snowdon, @ region 8. In region 8, you are correct, the Bow / ML tag is not good for regular season. However, in Westchester and Suffolk, you may use the Bow / ML tag during the regular season as well, in an archery only area.
  10. I used to hunt 8C in Rochester, archery only. It's been a long time, but I thought you could use your Bow/ML either sex tag all season long, in the archery only area. Can't remember for sure, my brain is fried, I guess.
  11. That's a great story! Really nice to see the pics too.
  12. I know I've got my son hooked, I intend to teach him as much as possible, and offer him every opportunity to gain interest. I'm starting on my girlfriend's little girls now. The older one (6) already goes out after squirrel with her Grandfather and I. The younger one (4) says she wants to go with us next time, she always tell me - "Ya gotta neek up on 'em" I could definitely do more though. Does anyone remember the DEC "Apprentice Hunter" program? It matched veteran hunters with interested youth who lacked the opportunity, or who had no one to teach them. I participated in it when I was a jr hunter, and had some great times. No one in my family hunted when I grew up. Gramps was too old, but still went to camp all the time, and he often took me. I think that's what sparked me, and the DEC program really helped me along.
  13. I take a soft sided lunch cooler with a frozen water bottle. I gut them, rinse them with cool water from a thermos, pat them dry, and throw them in the cooler. The cooler fits 4 gutted squirrels, and fits nice in my backpack.
  14. The squeaky wheel usually ends up getting kicked.
  15. Where are you located? You should be able to find something somewhat near by. Are you talking about deer hunting? Or small game?
  16. I KNOW it wasn't a real hunt, but it was no different than buying a cow, I just cut out the middle man!
  17. Killed this watusi there in March. Neat way to fill the freezer!
  18. I'm starting with the .22. I'm sure I'll end up with the shotgun when I get frustrated with all the leaves in the way.
  19. Good luck to anybody who's getting out tomorrow. I'm heading to camp after work. Really looking forward to it.
