  1. My profile pic is with my yellow lab, full name: Big Sky's Dixie Belle of the South, but we just call her Dixie. Big Sky is my kennel name. When I get a male, I'm going to name him Orion, call him o for short. I don't use the "no" command so i hope it works out. I like Remington, shortened to Remy. I like mine to be something related to what my dog is doing, like hunting, but i also want something uncommon. Then again, I like the Eukanuba ad with the black lab named "Preacher."
  2. Im thinking of picking one up, but im 50/50 on it. Theyre new so who knows what problems there might be. And after handling one, the stock felt like cheap plastic. Has anyone shot one or bought one? Ive read tons of reviews which tend to be very favorable, but im really looking for Joe Schmos thoughts.
  3. The best part might be R. Lee Ermey's appearance.
  4. As I read the law, no because it meets the criteria of one to be an assault weapon under the new regs: it has a pistol grip that extends below the action. If you bought one pre ban you may keep it if you register it and submit to another background check. STILL, I would definitely consult someone with some legal qualifications on this new bill if you think you have something that might be covered now. Or move out of state. (lol, jk)
  5. Doc's Archery in North Tonawanda has a winter league starting up next week. Its a three man team event, but he will slot you into a team. Its the Technohunt, a video screen at 20 yds, but still a lot of fun. I think 4 different "trips" rotate through for the next 10 weeks, including africa. After the winter league is the spring league, also a 3 man team, but the summer league is individual. $10 each time to shoot.
  6. I actually have just had both a colon and an upper done recently. honestly, neither one were all that bad. The colon was a very forgettable experience because of the drugs. the "worst" part is just passing the gas afterwards, but again your in such a stupor it doesnt matter. I have some phantom pain that since thanksgiving has been plaguing me. I've also had some CT scans and about a million xrays and blood tests and they have ruled pretty much everything out. Fortunately the pain has lessened quite a bit, but it is still there. GL with all your tests.
  7. I say put in for it, you never know and honestly wha'ts $10 but a stop at McD's. If you do get drawn, your shot a near if not record elk are very good. There was as story done by F&S last year about the difference between east and west records. They said the next world record would come from PA. I am going back home this fall to hunt elk in MT. I love being back home, hunting with my dad, and hunting in a style and environment very different than here. So if you can, start saving the pennies for it and go out west. But if you do, just pack up your whole house cuase you won't want to come back. I think the PP needed for a bull was 8 in PA, meaning 8 years of applying. Many of the elk are radio tagged, so they know right where they are. They are also fairly contained in the area, so scouting shouldn't be super hard, access to public or huntable land will be the challenge. Also, as LAW says, go down and watch the rut and listen for the bugling. It is so intense.
  8. Reason I ask is because I do need a new rifle, sold my old 7mm RemMag and have been toying between the 300Wm or a 270. I'm not gonna have the cash to buy another rifle for a long time and I still go out west a lot (home is MT) and still want something that will put everything down. I was just looking around a bit and started to think about the 7mm Mauser as an option and just wanted some others with experience on it thoughts. I know it was THE African gun at the beginning Honestly, I just want something that kicked less than my 7mm Rem Mag, I simply did not like shooting it. I'm not plinking with it, but I am gonna shoot it enough to be very familiar with it. But as far as a brand I haven't found one. I tend to be a Browning or Remington man myself. Except my Ruger 10/22.
  9. Just curious if anyone has one and how it compares to other rifles they shoot.
  10. I was going to, been looking to get a black gun for a few years and was gonna brave the chaos, but decided against it. Mainly cuz I have the flu. I was just wondering if anyone went and can let me know if I missed out on anything.
  11. I gotta agree on this. Its how I learned to hunt turkeys. I would also add start looking for birds now. They are probably grouped up still and will start to disperse in a few months. It also doesn't mean that they will be there come May 1, but it will give you a starting point. I do double duty when I am out hunting: ie, when squirrel/waterfowl, I am always looking for other sign, turkey or coyotes, etc. If you are really interested, I know down south the hunting is much better (IMHO) and the seasons start much earlier. Lower AL I think is end of Feb or close to it. I am going to NC for opening day first part of April. A 3 day hunt might run about $300, but it will get you some great experience very quickly, get you on birds and also give you a taste of weather or no you like it before you start investing in Turkey gear.
  12. If it doesn't jump the string, which they do for me. I've lost enough arrows at them that I rarely take a long shot. Or any shot at em with my bow.
  13. I had not heard the hog problem was in the ST, I thought it was much further east. Several buddies with camps down there don't know anything about them in the area.
  14. After a lot of research in choosing my first brand new auto loader, I went with an 1187 Supermag. I would have gone the extra $400 for the Versamax, but there are no deer barrels for it yet, and at the time no short turkey barrels either. I have used my 1187 for Turkey, waterfowl, and deer. The only complaint I can give for it was I had to to get a reg shotgun stock dipped, as they didnt make one in the Realtree APG that it came in in the Turkey version. Its never jammed and with a limbsaver, doesnt kick that bad with the turkey loads. there is a difference in the sportsman and supermag models: supermag will handle 3.5 inch shells for loose shot. both will only shoot a 3 inch slug, not a 3.5 inch, just to be clear.
  15. While we didn't have Chili, we did have some Venison steaks! Could have had goose, plenty in the freezer, but wife didn't want it.
  16. My wife got me this really neat duck call necklace, the call is like 1.5" and actually works. sounds more like a whistler. I also got a bowfishing reel that I had wanted since last year. oh and a Browning X-Bolt .300 Win Mag, in stainless. so pretty good on the gift end.
  17. I was wanting for for the past couple years and after all the hype decided to go ahead and try and find one. Anywhere that sells guns within 200 miles of Buffalo are all sold out. Then I thought about some family in Kansas and Montana that might be able to get me one and send it up here to an FFL and they area all sold out. Nearly anyone who would talk about the supply would say that they are all backordered over 2 months. My feeling is that they will make the sale of them banned but not ownership, probably a federal level. Here in NY, I have a great fear that something worse will happen, like forced buyback or complete ban. If that were to happen I would just send it to my family to hold and use until whenever. Honestly, I don't see myself in NY for many more years, so I just want to get it while I can. Just for kicks prices I have been quoted: Mossberg MMR Hunter: $1200 (had been 850) S&W: $1600 (had been 1100) RockRiver: $1800 (had been 1200) So the price gouging has really started. Too bad. I for one am not going to forget that when I need something else in the future. Not that I am vindictative, but I have always thought that the gun retailers/consumers have been on the same side. Sure everyone needs to make a buck. Also, Dicks and GM have stopped selling any AR, including the airsoft look alikes.

add squirrels, rabbits and Bass and that's my philosophy too.
  19. This is great wisdom. Always make sure your playing (or debating field) is level.
  20. id sit in that tree for days looking for that squirrel. I've kinda had a goal to do a "squirrel slam" someday, just something to shoot for. an albino would be such a trophy and incredibly cool memory.
  21. i think I have some shopping and decorating to do too.
