Monty Python Horseshoes

I got out one of my Blaze Orange vests to wear over my jacket . No sense in wearing camo and taking a chance on getting shot . I bought a 20 ga Savage bolt action shotgun to use in Monroe County but use my NEF 25-06 single shot rifle in the other areas that I hunt . Git 'r done !

I am pretty much ready for the gun opener . I will be in Geneseo with 2 of my sons and grandson . . We have our stands figured out for the opener and will have the woods pretty much covered . No idea who might be hunting on the adjacent properties . Being optimistic .

WE changed the batteries in my Cuddeback cameras and then I sat in my 2 man chair blind from 130 to 5 pm . I didn't see a thing . My son and grandson had hunted the am and saw a crapload of of deer . hopefully they will cooperate when gun season starts Saturday .

When I 1st started hunting in 1965 , I don't think anyone hunted from any tree stand . It was gun hunting and you found a spot by a big wide tree trunk and sat there for safety . We hunted on Gibsonville Road near Pine Tavern . It would be pitch black out and you would haer shots from the "Perry Boys" (as my FIL called them ) . I don't remember when people started using Ladder stands , climbers , etc ..

I feel the same way . At 83 it gets tougher to climb out of bed at zero dark thirty and the drive 50 miles to a hunting spot . I could hunt 10 miles away in Walworth but at my age I don't hunt unless one of my sons is with me . I didn't get to be this old by being too stupid .

My son and grandson are hunting the whole day in Geneseo . I am going to do an afternoon hunt there and change the camera batteries . So far my son has seen 9 deer but nothing close enough to shoot with the crossbow . My son shot a nice wide rack buck on his property yesterday in Italy Valley .

Another bad purchase was the " Air Skinner ". It's a device that using it connected to an air compressor makes getting the hide off much easier . You hook it up to the compressor and insert a needle point into various spots and it loosens the hide . However , it doesn't work that great on a deer that has been field dressed because the air escapes through the opening . My worst purchase would be The Rescue One Controlled Descent System . Several years ago , I purchased one of these for $150 . I opened the package but never used it . I often hunt out of mostly 15' ladder stands and use a safety harness . I think the CDS is better suited for someone using a climber and going higher in a tree .

It was getting rather tough for me to cock my CP Sniper 370 with a rope cocker at my old age . I purchased a Centerpoint Power Draw unit (cranking device) and installed it today .I had my adjustable stock set on One as I am small build . I had to put it on #2 in order to install the mounting clamp . The installation was a breeze . In order to engage the crank assembly , I had to put the adjustable stock on #3 . Once the crossbow is cocked and the crank assembly is removed , I put it back on #2 . It's pretty much of a nuisance to use but less painful for this old guy to cock the bow . I wonder how hard it will be to cock the bow at zero dark thirty !

Sat out in a blind in Mendon this afternoon for 5 hours . It turned out to be a waste of time as I saw nothing . When I got to my car , I looked across the road to a neighbor's field . Saw a couple bucks and several doe . Then as I was driving north on Rt 64 towards Mendon center , a couple cars flashed their lights at me . Just before the Golf Course parking lot , I saw 3 doe in the dithc waiting to cross the road . Bummer !

I went to the Town Clerk and picked up 2 for 8H . Now I need some deer to cooperate .

Have any of you applied for the extra Antlerless tags ? I haven't had any luck in the woods so far this season but will see about getting a couple extra tags this afternoon when I get my car back from the shop .

Well , I am going to try an afternoon hunt in Mendon tomorrow . Then back to Geneseo on Saturday . Don't know if I am physically able to do an all day hunt . My back is killing me . I did order a rope crank for my Centerpoint Sniper 370 and should get it either Thursday or Friday from Ohio . That might save my back . I need the deer to cooperate !

Was in the double stand by 6:15 . Sat back and relaxed as legal time was &:10 am . I had aa heck of a time cocking the crossbow before getting into the stand . A tad after 8 , 3 doe came up through the woods about 80 yards away . Lost sight of them in the thickets . About the same time a doe on the other side of the ditch and blew . She was up wind of me but might have scented me . That was it . My son didn't see any deer . The corn was down and the field was cleared . I might try Mendon Tuesday afternoon . In the meantime I am considering buying a rope crank for my crossbow . I had no trouble cocking the Xbow when I was checking it out in the back yard but had a heck of a time in the woods .

Going to head to Geneseo this morning for a sit in the woods . I hope I can find the stand in the dark . It's going to be cold so I hope these old bones can stand it . I just hope I get a shot . I will be in a double tree stand with a rail but I still plan to wear my safety harness . Happy Hunting to everyone !

My wife called me out to the TV a couple nights ago . They were talking about CWD and how terrible it is to the deer . This was on CBS , Channel 8 in Rochester . I told my wife that it was nothing new , just a scare . They had a couple of weird looking deer on the video to probably scare the public .As long as some groups will call for the tests , they will continue to get research grants from the government . It's a Scam !
