Where do we stand with crossbows
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Tinlodge's topic in CrossBow Hunting
I can see why he would do that. The previous youth hunts have had so many safety issues with bow hunters being shot. -

Fair enough. I would bet though that the majority of deer taken are off hand. -

NY dose not have the law banning in establishments that serve alcohol. They do exist in other states though. -

I understand what you are saying. I have an honest question though Doc. The same advantages you list for the crossbow could be used for a rifle or shotgun. Right? Bipod. Prone. How many deer have you shot with a gun from those positions. Out of all the deer you have taken. For me it is 1. -
Where do we stand with crossbows

All IBO competitive events are based on a "free-hand" style of shooting. No archer shall use any device such as shooting sticks, slings or other such accessories or shooting positions to create a "braced" shot. The only exceptions will be in the PCBH class where the use of such devices is required for continued participation. yeah....I not listen so good -

WNY posted the rules for IBO. must be free hand. now bipods, shooting stick etc. If I am not mistaken I think some of the IBO events are on 3D targets to simulate hunting conditions. Obviously not a 100% representation but we do it to practice for hunting so probably to closest correlation that could be made without have legions of statisticians following both styles hunters around to collect and interpret data. Doc you have seen the threads. The claims of how much more accurate the weapon is. how using it gives such an unfair advantage. The claims of the huge range capabilities and advantages over a compound. This is a demonstration that, while it isn't hunting, it is the same conditions and distances for both classes and the results give the nod to the compound. -

I have had several opportunities to brace my arm on the tree I am in while shooting a compound too. it certainly helps. This was brought up as an illustration that the crossbow isn't some magic machine that will cure all the ills and that it is capable of so much more than a compound. The competition certainly is a very controlled environment but I don't think the point was ridiculous. -
Self defense or an overzealous prosecutor?

I think the issue will prove to be the residents requirement to retreat. -

As far as the Op's title....yes and yes. The video clearly shows a shot . who knows, was the robber loaded with blanks? their fault for bringing blanks to a gun fight if it is the case. -

Yeah...they are lazy slobs in that arena too. Must be a section of a form you have to fill out when you buy one...lol -
Where do we stand with crossbows

I used categories from the amateur divisions for the bow scores. I would have dropped way down to the beginners bow group that allows releases but they score at 35 yards. the one I quoted is amateur and the lowest category that that shoots at the green stake. 45 yards. (the same as the crossbows) -

Where do we stand with crossbows
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Tinlodge's topic in CrossBow Hunting
It was a quote of essence. The argument has been made many many times here before that the crossbow is so much more accurate, capable of much further distance and requires much less practice. Unless these guys are just pulling their crossbows out of the box and heading to IBO nationals, they seem to be outshot by even the hunting category, not to mention the advanced. -

Interesting. The MBR class which is basically our hunting set up and shot from the green stake compared to X-bow class shot fro the green stake yields some results that fly in the face of "putting a crossbow in the hands of a hunter turns them into a super hunter" . The MBR scores seem slightly higher. The AHC (advanced Hunter) scores quite a bit over the X-bow -

was looking for a link to shoot results. Any Idea where we could find the results from the 2013 Championships? -
on my shotgun for home it has a mounted 1" tube light on a B-square mount. the beam is adjustable so you can take you anticipated distance and adjust your light to the guns pattern at that distance. Basically you don't have to aim. if it is in the light it is hit.

That is a damn nice light. pretty reasonable on the price too.

Touché. Actually my cousin and I tested one out. Out concern was just as Larry had explained. (End up blinding both of you). It worked surprisingly well. Even though I new the general direction the light was coming from there was no way I was focusing on anything. I think a strobe is the answer if you are dark and need light to react. Larry. I have to check the specs. I thought the one we use is LED and around 500k

Without question the best light to use is a high intensity strobe

Skinning a deer with a golf ball.

I wouldn't do it in the kitchen but there isn't really that much of it. Not bad at all. We cut up in a pole barn and you may get a quick whiff but worth it.
