Anyone have a PA non resident carry permit?
BigRed44 replied to Zem18's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I know Lycoming county and Potter county will give you one but i have been told you must have a non-restricted ny carry permit in order to get it. They wont give you one if you have a permit only for target shooting an hunting. -
It's happened to us all. Just learn from this and remember to ALWAYS be ready. I am standing 90% of the time in my stand with my bow in hand and resting on the shooters rest so when something comes in i have as little movement as possible to line up for the shot. Sometimes those sneaky buggers just come out of nowhere. Better luck next time.

I think it would depend on where you are hunting. If there are a lot of gun hunters around you then your chance of seeing a deer come by that is not spooked would be less likely. Probably 80% of the deer I've shot in PA have been on the run. Things are totally different where I hunt in NY. Nobody is really pushing them around me.

Nope, going with some friends who go every year. Looking like a decent weekend up there too. Can't wait! -
Northern Zone rifle opener??? Anyone Hiking in?
BigRed44 replied to njg0621's topic in General Hunting
I am doing a 4 day hunt hunt up near lake pleasant the second weekend in November but staying at a hotel. Will be doing all day hunts though so packing lunch and snacks. I've done winter camping before and ended up sleeping in the truck lol. Too cold for me. -
When i first set up my bow i had 15, 25, 35 but was not very comfortable at 35 so i dropped it down to 10, 20, 30 and the 40 only gets used for target practice. Whatever works for you is what is best.

Put a QAD Hunter on mine this year and have not had any problems. Even shot my first Robin Hood at 20 yds with it. Was a good price too at $60 from Dicks.

Just got off the phone with DEC. They said that I just purchased my lifetime license for the 2012-13 hunting season and my archery and DMP tags are for the 2013-14 season. So the turkey tags that printed out are now expired. They will be sending me this years license in the mail which will include the regular season buck, bear, and turkey tags. Should get it in about 10 days. If I would have waited until after Oct 1st to purchase, or maybe the week prior, then everything would have printed out right there at dicks.

I just purchased my lifetime sportsman license from dicks and when I got home I noticed that my long list of tags does not include the regular season deer tag or a bear tag. It has everything else; Turkey, bow, and DMP but no regular buck or bear tags. Did they mess something up or will the tags be sent in the mail? Should I go back to dicks or call DEC? Figured I would ask here first. Thanks.

Could be Bull Hill Rd? That connects to Rt 13 just south of Ithaca in Newfield and right accross from connecticut hill. Glad to hear about big bucks in my area though and glad she didn't hit it.

Good job on the kill. Thats a nice looking yote. I just looked up some info about that motion detector. Thats a great idea for coyote hunting. You can hunt 24/7 without taking a step outside.

Where are you located? Check out your local rod and gun clubs to see if they have an indoor range. I plan on doing a couple of 3d shoots this year with a buddy. Here's the website http://pennyork3darchery.com/ They do these pretty much everywhere, just have to find them.

This is very interesting to say the least. I'm suprised people haven't jumped in with opinions on this matter. I don't know what to believe. I have never seen one myself but just in the last 6 months i have heard from 4 different people claiming to have seen a black cougar. All sightings were within 60 miles of each other. We have game cameras set up in all locations that they were seen but no luck getting photo's. Could have just been black bears or the neighbors dog or who knows what. But still, interesting.

I just put some peroxide in an old spray bottle and taped off the base of the antlers then scrubbed lightly with an old tooth brush. Did that twice using a good bit of peroxide each time and came out pretty good. I like the paste idea though. Will have to try that next time.

Will do some small game hunting for sure but now that big game is over its back to playing with the off road toys. Between riding, racing and rebuilding some 3 wheelers i will keep pretty busy. Can't wait for the ponds to freeze over too for some ice racing.

Sucks about the deer. I suspect road kill though if there's no sign of being shot. I kind of doubt all head shots either. Would like to hear more about this DEC officer lady of my dreams though...

Always wonder why people boil the skull with the hair and skin on it. Just skin it off with a knife and get as much off as you can before boiling. Then most of the smell is just like cooked meat. I do mine outside anyway over a wood fire.

ONE OF THE NICEST TATTOOS I HAVE EVER SEEN
BigRed44 replied to hunterman7956's topic in General Chit Chat
Thats some really nice work. I just recently got a european mount tat on my arm, its my avatar pic. Would like to add to it some day. I like the idea of trees in the background like this one. -
I'm always up for riding. Hit me up in the spring, I'm only a half hour from ya.

Wanna sell it? lol, j/k. Nice bike though. A VTX 1300 will be my next bike for sure. I've rode a couple and fell in love. I have a Shadow ACE 750 right now and want to upgrade. And i agree, get a paint job.

I use zip lock freezer bags. Works fine as long as you push out as much air as possible before sealing. Also, i dont keep deer meat for more than one year so ive never had a problem with freezer burn. And, a permanent marker works perfect for labeling packages.

well buck fever struck and i missed my first shot at a deer
BigRed44 replied to fisher2's topic in Deer Hunting
I get doe fever, lol. Was shaking like a leaf saturday morning and missed a small doe but luckily got another oportunity and dropped a large doe just an hour later. Dont get too upset with yourself. We've all been there. You'll get another chance. -
Yes, just boiled over open fire, scrubbed with warm water and dawn dish soap then sprayed with peroxide to whiten it up some.

First buck I've gotten with a bow. 7 point (should be an 8 but has broken brow tine) with 15 1/2" spread. Got him 11/9 at 9:40am.

I've always had good luck with sardines also but good point about smelling like a fish after setting traps. Maybe wear some rubber gloves.
