  1. I have been hunting a 150" + 12 point for 3 years now. Unfortunately, I have been too busy the last 3 seasons to hunt with my muzzleloader tag. I have hunted this deer both Bow and "Regular" season, again, for this is the 3rd year in a row. I cleared my schedule this year to hunt the week of Muzzleloader in hopes that his patterns change enough that I get a glimpse of him. For the past 3 seasons, I have not seen him once while hunting. Of all the trail camera pics I have of him from the past 3 seasons, I have a whopping 3 in daylight hours. This deer is very nocturnal and seems to crawl into some deep dark hole on my hunting property as soon as hunting kicks in. I have a GENERAL idea of where he beds and where he eats, but based on the cameras I have set up, his range is HUGE (camera's are 1.2 miles apart at the far ends and he is on both of them). I know once the rut is over and the season winds on, the deer only have 3 main concerns, Food, Rest & Safety and they can become even more nocturnal. For those of you who have been very successful hunting this late season hunt, what have you seen and done? And tips and / or suggestions? would you be more inclined to hunt the food source or the bedding area or somewhere in between (again, keep in mind the large area we are talking). this deer is keeping me up at night now. I don't ever post things like this on here, but I am getting desperate for any new insight that I may be overlooking. Thanks for any replies!
  2. yes, I understand. I never said that they were shot by a hunter and sold on the black market. I am simply stating that they serve exotic game all over the country. It is big business! I am surprised at the "shock" that someone saw it on a menu here in NY. As I originally posted, I've seen venison in states that dont' even have deer let alone NY with a billion of them.
  3. I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen dead on a road the end of October. Had I not been driving to Montreal, QC I would have pulled over and called the DEC to keep the rack.
  4. Lol, the fact that they took time to look it up, read it and waste their time posting a comment says plenty about useless liberals. Us normal people, if we don't like something, we ignore it and don't waste our time.
  5. Deer meat is called venison!!! There is no insinuation that it is wild just because it said venison! Like I said, plenty of restaurants sell venison and other wild game because they can get a pretty penny for serving something exotic to most.
  6. Whats wrong with wild game on a menu? Seems like you mad that it was even offered? I have eaten at some very high end restaurants around the country and some of my favorite and most memorable meals have been some wild game: Venison, Elk, Bison, Ostrich, Alligator, Rattle Snake, Etc. Given the bizzilion deer shot in NYS, why not have it go to use?
  7. lol. Still cool to see, but wish NYS had better deer managment program! But, DON'T get that hot topic started again.....
  8. yeah, only makes sense. 3 years in a row: 12, 14 and then 24 pointer. DEFINTIELY not in NYS!!!
  9. I skipped reading most of this so, I am sure I am being redundant, but I love my powerbelts. Not sure all the hate in here for them. I will gladly take a picture of the one I save from my last deer. PEFECT mushroom. Dropped a 200+ pound deer (the buck in my avatar) in its tracks. Also shot a 300 lb + mule deer at 200 yards and he went about 50 yards. Have shot 2 other whitetail also. I shoot a .50 cal TC Omega and a 245 grain powerbelt with 150 grains of powder (recommended magnum load by TC).
  10. Right! As I said, I thoroughly enjoy the site. I don't want to put anyone on the "ignore" list because i am not offended or anythign. It just ruins some posts. It would be nice if they were warned well prior to 7 pages of BS is all! lol
  11. I don't judge people for what they shoot. You are right. This may be a trophy to a lot of people and that is terrific. I will be the first one to shake your hand and congradulate you. I try my best to let deer age though. If you think it is a trophy and shoot it great, but don't shoot it just because someone else would anyway. That is a poor excuse to pull the trigger! lol
  12. Great Site! Glad I came across it. My only complaint (and this in no way will effect me negatively from continuing to be a member), is the personal pissing contests that some topics turn into. I have ZERO issue with a good debate, but don't see any room for personal attacks, name calling, and general BS that had nothing to do with the original post. There was a recent one where a Moderator even wrote to take it to PM and the conversation still carried on with no consequences. I literally had to read through 7 pages of posts to see if anythign relevant was added to the topic thread. It was a good topic too. By that point there was no use in replying because people stopped reading it. Any way to be a bit more forceful in stopping those conversations from ruining a thread??
  13. I hate this argument. People in my hunting camp argue the same thing. "You might as well shoot em because someone else will anyways." I let a lot of young bucks, some as big as these go every year in hopes they make it. Not all do, but a lot do. It just takes 1 to have a trophy on your wall. If the claim were true, that "someone else will" then NO bucks would be alive each year. 100% of deer would be yearling button bucks. Obviously plenty of deer DO make it though, thus the argument to let them live. 1 person can make a difference.
  14. I'm not arguing with the mathmatical equation. I am telling you that it does not come into effect. Clearly the common sense side of you isn't reading this very clearly. Let me sum this up in as simple of terms as I can. that equation is saying that (and i will use hunting terms to make this crystal clear): From the base of the tree to the deer is not the same distance as from the tree stand / hunter to the deer. NO SHIT!!! WHO in their right mind would measure from the base of the tree to the deer, then climb up in their stand and think it was the same distance? Is that how you hunt? Do you see a deer and say "hey deer hold on a second," Get out of your stand grab a tape measure, calculate the distance from the ground to where you shoot from, then pace off from the tree to the deer, then climb back in the stand get out your pad a paper and a pencil and calculate the hypotnuse for the optimal yardage?????/ Hell No you don't. If you are standign in your stand and pull out a range finder, the distance it measures IS THE DISTANCE. PERIOD, end of story. It is a laser that measures a straight line from you to the target. It makes no damn difference what the distance from the base of the tree is. DUH. If the range finder says it is 40 yards, it is 40 yards. Further to that point. If you are in your back yard, and you have a target set up at 40 yards, it is EXACTLY the same as 40 yards anywhere else on earth. You don't get magically trasported to some parelle universe where 40 linear yards in your back yard is somehow not 40 linear yards from your tree stand (measure on a straigh line because that iS WHAT A RANGE FINDER DOES). How could you possibly argue that?
  15. I HATE TRASH (and people...lol). Why do people do that? I find beer cans and other trash all the time. 1) who is drinking beer while they are hunting (scary enough), but then 2) don't be a lazy piece of #$@#$ and leave it in the woods. ZERO respect.
  16. Man these companies have people sucked in for expensive gadgets. Talk about good marketing. lol.
  17. and exactly what I just posted. you are not measuring from the base of the tree if you are in your tree stand!! So you are saying that when you see a deer, you climb down, measure from the base of the tree, then climb back up to figure out how much extra distance it is now that you are 20 feet up? DUH, of course you don't If you are in your tree, and you range find an object at 40 yards, guess how far it is... 40 YARDS!!!! (cuz, if it isn't redundant enough, you arn't measuring from teh base of the tree, you are measuring from where you are shooting).
  18. WRONG! you fail my friend. Because I don't measure (and neither do you) to the base of the tree and then over to my target than calculate the hypotnuse! If you are standing in your tree stand and range find an object, it is a STRAIGHT line. if it is 40 yards, it is 40 yards, no fancy math needed whatsoever. This is exactly why people go spend money on these ridiculous rangefinders thinking 40 yards isn't 40 yards because they are in a tree!
  19. Yes, a rangefinder is a GREAT idea, we were specifically commenting on the ones with "arc compensation" as had been orginally asked. You have to know the distance. You can't guess or field judge. at teh very least, have land marks of trees or somethign so you know when a deer walks buy exactly what he is without rangefinding. If it is 40 yards to your target from a tree, it is exactly the same thing as if it were 40 yards to your target from not in a tree. 40 yards is 40 yards no matter how you slice it. The special "deer hunting" range finders for bows are a gimmick.
  20. lmao. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw that this morning. Had to share it. I can't imagine first impression what would go through ones head. You wake up, grab your cub of coffee, open the blinds and HOLY HELL...WTF......RUN.....oh wait, i think there is something stuck on his head...lmao.
  21. I think I have said this before, but I hate people! lol
  22. I personally don't understand them. To me they seem gimickie to squeeze more money out of hunters. If your bow is sighted in to a certain distance, then it doesn't matter where you shoot from. If I take a 30 yard shot with my 30 yard pin, the deer is dead from the ground or the tree stand. 30 yards is 30 yards. When you sight your bow in, whether you realize it or not, you have already compensated for the arc of the arrow!
  23. HOW ABOUT A TRUCE AND YOU ALL GO PM EACH OTHER. GEEZ! LOL.
