And, I appreciate a good debate btw. you can ALWAYS learn something! Some people get on here and attack other people and argue just to argue. That isn't me. it is all in the spirit of comaraderie.

Its all good! I'm not mad. lol. simple differnce in opinion. As I have LOTS of trail camera pics in my area and they are all at night. I have hunted my #$# off the past few weeks between bow / gun and have seen nothing but immature deer while my top 5 hit list bucks haven't moved once during shooting hours. We are good! Happy hunting.
  3. Based on all the gun shots before 7:05, we all know the answer to that....lol. If it is light and safe, I am pulling the trigger! No hesitation. Come and arrest me. If it is 6:15 and it is light because of the moon and snow, then that is not DAYLIGHT and no, I wouldn't. Buf if the sun is coming up and it is daylight enough to safely shoot.....well......BANG
  4. exactly. In fact, a lot of states are 30 minutes before published sunrise and 30 minutes after published sunset times. it makes a whole lot more sense. If it is too dark to shoot you don't, but if it is too light to not to, what is the safety concern?
  5. thats why we process ours ourself. I don't like the thought of giving a guy MY deer and getting back deer meet from ANY deer! You never know what happened to that other deer that someone turns in.

In the minority. Go ahead a take a survey of ALL deer shot on opening weekend and let me know how many were shot in the middle of the day (which is what this post turned into) that were either A) still hunted or B ) pushed and on the move when shot. Also, back to the same thing I have typed now for the 3rd time, a majority of hunters are opening week folk. The smart hunters on here who work hard all season to be in the right place at the righ time are definitely in the minority. Go survey your AVERAGE hunter and see 1) how many hours they hunt the whole season 2) how many deer they have shot still hunting 3) how many big deer (over 130") they have even seen in their life 4) and how many of those were "peacefully meandoring through" versus running 100 mph. Lastly, I didn't say anything about the moon phase playing an effect on deer behavior. I just said with the full moon. Meaning, it is incredibly bright at night making it easier for the deer to move. It was damn near daylight opening day by me with the full moon and snow on the ground. And btw, I am NOT disagreeing with you or anyone else on here. You all have to read what I actually wrote instead of nitpicking it to death. You are talking to an expert hunter like yourself. I assure you I get it. No matter what you say, you aren't going to convince me that deer activity during the day is exactly the same every day of every week of every year amongst every deer during every condition. Conditions change and deer activity changes. Not sure how you could argue that point.

And again, everyone is generalizing that this is all or nothing. For anyone who thinks that daytime deer activity is EXACTLY the same regardless of the weather, wind, rut, etc, you are #$#% crazy! Nobody said that you won't see deer. Nobody said that it is impossible for a giant to walk by in the middle of the day. If you "live and breath deer" then you should be the first to understand this. I sit all day. warm or cold, rut or not. you never know what will come by. You can't see them if you are not in the woods. For someone who sees more deer than the average schmoe, I will guarantee you that the wind, temperature, moon phase and rut all play HUGE factors in when and if you will see deer. Go ahead and keep arguing against that!!
  8. No offense on this one, but a specific time is a bit ridiculous. I am by NO means saying that people should be unsafely shooting. I hear people every opening morning shooting when i can't even see the ground from my tree stand. It is RIDICULOUS. However...with that said, I bow hunted Thursday and Friday prior to opening day of shotgun. On both of those days, I could see clearly at 6:20 am 150 yards from my stand (the furthest point i can see). At 6:40 it was LIGHT light out. I could see the sun coming up and could make out the definition of bark on a tree at 150 yards. By 7:05 or whatever the magic time is, it had been light for over 30 minutes (thus why A LOT of states are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset). Considering I am shooting no more than 50 yards, saying you can't shoot until 7:05 is pretty dumb. And, with THAT said, I am very safe hunter. In the exact same breath I will say that at 7:05, if it was too dark to see still, I wouldn't shoot.

Was that directed at me? I never said anything about not being in the woods! I agree 100% that ANYTHING COULD happen. Deer get pushed, take a stroll, just generally mess up once and a while. HOWEVER, IN GENERAL, the warm tempartures, wind and full moon has decreased daytime deer activity. I love when people take a statment and make it all or nothing. As if anyone said that ALL deer are nocturnal and everyone should go to McDonalds because there is a 0% chance of seeing anything. lol. geez.
  10. Not to piss off the good ones out there, but goose hunters @$@# kill me!!! I hate them behind my house. A few years ago my brother and I walk out behind me and are walking the edge of a field / woods. We are obviously watching the woods for deer and not so much the field. Next thing we know a couple goose hunters pop up in the middle of the field (maybe 200 yards from my brothers house and MAYBE 100 yards from us) and start shooting over our fricken heads and at the houses. Next thing its starts raining down pellets on the houses. We basically run for cover and called the State Police (who's station is 2 minutes from there). They show up with the DEC. There are holes in the siding of my brothers house!! They confiscate the shotguns, tow their truck and cuff them! Sweet justice. IDIOTS!!!!!!

Doe and a fawn don't have racks the last time I checked, therefore are not what was being discussed. Because you saw that, it means that the 5.5 year old 10 point is going to be out in the middle of the day? lol

They get pushed! simple answer. a vast majority of deer hunters are "opening weekend' folk. They don't put time and effort into scouting, stand placement, scent control, etc. They show up Saturday morning with their buddies and rely on the bizzilion hunters in the woods to move the deer around. Where I sit, even on opening day with all the gun shots, the deer are pretty well calm. The big deer were not moviing due to it being warm, windy and bright full moon.

very young deer out during the day. I have 15 different bucks of 8 point or better on my cameras from the last 2 months. During this season I have seen 13 bucks and NOT ONE of the ones on my cameras (tons of 4's, 6's and young 8's). They are all moving at night. The warm tempartures and full moon certainly don't help the cause either.
  14. Thats a nice 145" deer! Whats with the frown? lol
  15. I dunno about that. He is has an awfully grey face. He could be an old deer.
  16. yeah, if you can find that camera, you will know where all the deer eat and sleep! That is a pretty slick trick. I need to try and get one velcroed on a deer where I hunt!!
  17. Not neccesarily talking about here in NYS, but YES, I agree that hunting has become a rich mans sport. I was looking into doing a whitetail hunt in KS, IA, IL area for the past 2 years. The time you factor everything in, you are looking $7,000 to shoot a stinkin whitetail. And that is for the most common sport species on the planet. Try hunting trophy elk in UT, or Moose in AK or Caribou in Canada. You could pay anywhere from $10,000 to $150,000 for a tag. Utterly disgusting!!! I've also wanted to purchase a nice piece of property (not neccesarily for just hunting, but that would be a bonus). Now you are talking in the MILLIONS $$. Its crazy. Go to whitetailproperties.com and do a search. it is almost laughable that farm land worth $1,000 an acre, if it holds good deer population, all of a sudden is worth $10,000 an acre.
  18. And that too! Never even maentioned that aspect of it. When I am bowhunting deer, I have a turket permit as well. I would shoot a turkey in a heartbeat. Go ahead and wear your BO. lol.
  19. exactly! I have a friend I hunt with who shoots a TC pistol in a .30 cal. I think it is a .308. Think is sick!
  20. Agree 10000%. Just what I was saying in serveral posts. Peoples rationaly of why kids should be able to hunt earlier is down right scary. To me, a gun and a bow are the same thing for a child. They are a weapon used to kill. Nothing more, nothing less. Not sure why one would say it is ok to bow hunt, but hey, youre not mature enough to gun hunt?? If they aren't mature enough for a gun, they aren 't mature enough for ANY weapon. Both are supervised by an adult, so it is not like the kid is out running aroudn the woods rambo style by himself. I haveto stop reading this thread, because it just gets me aggrevated! lol. I am out.....
  21. you got it!!! And thus the world we live in today.
