Ok who else hasn’t made it out with the bow yet
New York Hillbilly replied to rob-c's topic in Deer Hunting
I just got back from Alaska a few days ago and spent them visiting daughter, SIL, and almost 3 year old grandson. Headed to my place in 7M in the morning to start my hunting season. -
Thanks all for the input. I would be working for the VA. For those interested in fishing pics and Alaska pics in general I can post some. As for hunting here on the Kenai....it sucks! Alaska is a huge place and unless you have unlimited time or money, hunting is not what you, or at least I thought it was. Nothing like the smell of apples, leaves, the feel of crisp autumn air and the crunch of deer approaching to make your heart pound with excitement!

Yup......Weatherby 30.06 and still have it in its case. : )

I'm born and raised in central NY, currently living in Alaska. Looking at possible return because of family and my work would be in Bath. Deer hunting there is? Thanks in advance!

I can't believe I'm doing this, but yesterday I drove from Rochester to my property in 7M just for the afternoon watch, and then back to Rochester. I needed to take care of business here today, but am driving back to 7M at 3:30 AM from Rochester. I'll spend the last day of this season in the woods, then drive back to Rochester to put this season behind me. It's a 5 hour round trip! What is wrong with me! : 0 -

Out here but not really feeling it today. Other than dusting of snow here and there,, it’s a brown landscape. -

Almost at the top of the ridge. Sitting on ground for a change of pace. Calm, quiet and dusting of snow. Two sets of insulated coveralls lol. Feels deery. Now if I can only keep from coughing. Damned pneumonia! -

Last evening sit was a bust. Headed high on the ridge today for old times sake. Took some nice bucks up there over the years but not hunted it in the past few. New orange hat from coffee/gas store ought to do the trick! Good luck all! -

Too many feet up! -
Make sure you don't let your emotions dictate though. Look at it realistically. I agree with Grow about it being smart that the land was purchased to eliminate future problems with ROW. However, keep in mind if it is i the middle of everyone else's property, they also have lots of potential access to the land you are considering. You might want to check the neighboring land owners out a little first. I would not be afraid to offer lower, but that is just me. You can always come up, and like most everything out there for sale, Cash is King.

Perhaps! And, Nomad, it sounds like you got a great deal. But at 140 dollars, I guarantee it's still a whole lot cheaper than the emergency room, back surgery, a wheelchair, or funeral. : 0 Eddie, I would say you made the right choice.

Congrats on the new puppy! If AKC, any "Oakhill" hounds in it's pedigree?

Congrats Jeremy on a nice buck! -
Congrats on the new addition to the family. I owned 2 dachshunds over the years and loved them. Babies to be sure, but pound for pound the toughest dogs I've ever owned. Especially my mini dachshund, "Squeaker", who went missing the first week of deer season one year, only to find he was caught in a neighbors trap that was not being checked regularly. We thought he was stolen, but laid there in the trap across the road from our house, in the hedgerow. In the cold, wind, and snow we could not hear him barking. When he was finally released from the trap and let come home on his own, his foot was about ripped off, and had to be removed by the vet in the middle of the night. Yup...tough little boy! I would like another someday. Happy for you!

I'm not sure how well the the swap DMP situation works out, but it got me to thinking. As I sit here in Webster at my daughters house, I am enjoying immensely the time with my almost 1 year old grandson, but am also longing to get in the woods and hunt deer. My property is some of the best deer hunting around, but is 2 1/2 hours away in 7M. I spent the first 5 days of this season there, but was missing the family I traveled back from Alaska to be with, so I stopped hunting and came back to Webster. Now in between playing with the baby, I am reading about everyone else chasing deer, enjoying their pictures and stories, and am getting anxious to get out there. So my question is: Although probably to late for this season, how well do you think a Swap Hunt arrangement might work out next season. For example, if I allowed someone to hunt for a few days on my property in 7M, or took them there, for the same opportunity out here towards Webster? I seem to remember many years ago, people doing a Swap Hunt arrangement in some hunting organization, can't remember the name, maybe "North American Hunter?" I didn't even put in for landowner permit this year, because it was too late, and ended up getting selected for a couple permits out this way, one in Wheatland, and the other close by too. Thoughts?

Relying on tracker/dogs is out of control!

I was invited as a guest to a couple deer camps in he past, but never belonged to one myself. Owning my own property since the early 90's, I never had the need to join a club. I did however associate with many guys who did belong to deer camps. When a deer was wounded as far as I have seen everyone chipped in to try and help in the recovery, sort of like how it is handled on my land. No flogging to the best of my knowledge, but with some of those guys, who knows! : ) My point was actually was referencing the same type of guy you said makes you lose your mind. In fact, it is the same type of guy you mention that year after year comes to my house wanting to track his latest wounded deer. Same guys almost every time. It gets old after a few years, and I have gone so far as tracked other peoples deer on my land, help gut them in the dark, and even let them use my four wheelers and/or tractor to carry back to their truck parked in my driveway. Like I said though, it has gotten old! (like me...: ) ) Sad but true when it comes to people lying I guess. I said the same thing earlier, only the shooter knows what real went down. Also, like I said before, bad stuff can happen under the best of circumstances, so I'm not suggesting you beat down someone who has wounded a deer. I would say help find it, learn from the situation, and try not to repeat it. I do believe the person who makes a habit of it though, will likely earn a reputation for being that type of hunter. And if caught lying about it, as most liars eventually are found out, I can't imagine anyone wanting to invite such a person to hunt on your land, or in your deer camp. I will now again wish you all happy, safe hunting, and hope to see lots of pictures and read your stories, after Opening Day, my rental awaits. Peace all! -

Oh well, time to put this to bed and go play with grandson, and think of happier things. : ) Looks like finally beating this reaction the flu shot, starting to breathe again, and now I need to rent me a car a car and drive to my woodlot to check on some stands before opening day. Good luck to all, and safe hunting!
