Thanks Bubba hunter49, The visibility is excellent because you can unzip three sides. I only unzip the one though because I have it positioned in a way that I take advantage of the biggest (no pun intended) window of opportunity. I know how the deer travel for the most part after twenty years of hunting the same farm and use that to my advantage. By opening only the one window it really cuts the wind to a mere nuisance at it's worst. That is unless the wind is coming from that direction an then it's like being in a car wash with your windows down. LOL!

Very good news............congrats!

Bubba I not only agree with the "swapped hunt" idea but actually proposed/offered it at one point on the DMP swap thread last year. Instead of all the swapping of tags why not just offer a chance to have others walk a mile or sit 8 hours in your boots/stands. I think it would do several things really, build a sense of hunting community, provide new hunting experiences, and add a lot of insight into what it's like to be the other guy/gal. Granted not all people will mesh, as personalities and hunting styles need to be compatible at least at some level. But I think people can usually get a sense of who they might hang out with or be comfortable around based on the vibes they get from the posts they read. There would be no guarantee however regarding the actual experience I guess because it would be like a blind date with guns....hahaha!

Hey and for those who need a laugh ( at my expense....permission granted) let me show you my stand from this morning. I call it my "tree tent" or my "buddy stand". Not because I take anybody up there with me, but because I actually have one of those small propane "buddy heaters" in it. I haven't turned the heater on yet this year because ... Uh ... Well... I'm afraid it might be seen as a bit if overkill. Hahaha. Or, more honestly I'm afraid the tent might fill up with propane and when it sparks the whole mess might go up in one quick.... Whoosh!!! And then I'll go down in local lore as the hunter who flash fried himself in the top of a pine tree. Hahaha!!

Thanks folks! It's nice to be able to share the experience with others who "get it". I was just thinking that one of the reasons I actually pulled the trigger today was because my nephew was there to share in it. It was fun to see him smile and his eyes light up! Have a Happy Thanksgiving all! Oh and you're right First-Light, they pretty much stay put when you put the shot there.

With it as foggy and drizzly as it was this morning, I figured the deer would be on the move. I had my nephew go high on the ridge and I settled into my "tree tent". This spot overlooks a logging road that cuts through a large scrub apple orchard on the side of a hill, with deep ravines and creek bottoms. At about 7:30 I had two small does only a few yards from my tree tent, but in the thicket and no shots. At a little after 8 am, I watched several deer walking up the ridge about 130 yards away. The first may have been a buck , then came some medium to small sized does. Then came a big doe who turned and walked downhill at first then turned and started back up the hill. When she passed a small apple tree and was broadside I put the crosshairs on her and fired. She immediately dropped to the ground but a wave of "what the heck" raced over me as several deer bounded back down the hill. For a moment I thought she was one of them and I could not believe I had missed. My nephew texted me and asked if I had been the one who shot. When I said yes he was all excited and asked if he could "come help". Lol! He really was cold. Hahaha. When he got to me we walked over and there she was dead in the spot she was shot . Thankfully no tracking on this one because it is real thick where I was hunting. Another good memory for me as I enjoy being back home to spend time with my family. Lots to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!

Congrats!

Decided to fill my DMP tag today. Was a nice big doe and it felt right.

From my stand this morning.

Sounds good Irish....we need to make mine ""RootBeer"! Hahaha In the meantime good luck out there this morning if you are out. It's dark, foggy, drippy and just settled in and sent nephew to his stand. They should be moving this morning!
-
Sold mine years ago, just never had the time to go. Same goes for my motorcycle, sold, no time.
-
Hey Irish, I never noticed you are just down the road from me. We're getting loaded in snow here in Sangerfield, too!
-
Hey Joe, Is that picture from today? Is that all the snow there is up north right now?

I like the idea of wound one and lose it, burn the tag. No matter if it's gun or bow I think the idea has merit. It might make people really think twice before pulling the trigger or release. I'm also curious about how many people who live by the fill every tag they can get their hands on, own their own land.

At what point does a person feel they killed enough deer for one season? I don't think there was anything wrong with Wooly's question, and in fact find myself wondering the same thing. I doubt like heck anyone on this site would rather see a deer on anybody's windshield, and see that comment more as a knee jerk, emotional response to an honest, poignant question. By the same token I don't think it requires a list of explanations or excuses about why someone kills a pile of deer if it is done legally. To answer Wooly's question though I think is really pretty simple. It's a very personal thing we all need to ask ourselves, and to know when the little voice in our head (conscience) tells us enough is enough, it's time to stop for the year.

Yup, no kidding! They cut the corner from a gravel pit and scrubby finger that separates two overgrown fields. It puts them only feet in front of my blind. Mostly I just watch them walk past. Lol!
-
Wow. Looks like I slept in on the wrong morning. My fields look like a deer convention went through, across, in circles and just plain hung out all morning. Well lets see if walk ten feet in front of my stand again this afternoon.

But it's better than the alternative! lol

All the time in the stand finally paid off

Congrats on a real nice buck. If you're looking for a score I say "hunter 1-buck zero". lol Oh you mean the rack. If we are going to do this, my guess is 100'. -
Congrats on your first deer! What a fitting day to break the "ice"!

Tangled buck saved from drowning.
New York Hillbilly replied to stevenjackson's topic in General Chit Chat
They needed a gas operated pole saw like mine. it extends about 12 feet. While its pretty loud, it is also amazingly fast and would have made quick work of that rack. Congrats to those guys though for saving the one buck from drowning. -
Oops picture didn't work first time - still guilty!
-
Now I ask you: Doesn't she have guilt written all over her face? Lol
-
Naw..... I'm smarter than that....I'll blame our terrier! Hahaha

Back in the house, slow cooker full of piping hot pork and beans, coffee, and company of my wife, two cats and our little terrier. A welcome end to a slow but peaceful afternoon of deer hunting.
