  1. LOL! If you get a moment go back and read what I posted on October 10th when you asked board members for advice about hunting swamps. See if what you just posted about where you are finding the "rubs", "safe" area, buck activity, isn't almost word for word what I said. The little bushy transition areas or "intersection" you call it, is what I was describing to you. I have always found them to be hot spots. I guess you can't bow hunt the same area for 38 years, many of them almost every day of the season, without learning things even on accident. LOL! Good luck closing the deal now.
  2. Cool bears!!! I bet that was exciting.
  3. It would be nice if you were having a better season. But with the deer report you are giving from our area, maybe my getting screwed out of bow hunting time this year was not such a big deal after all. This was the least time I ever had to bow hunt in all my 38 seasons. Between non stop work schedule, my wife's little dog needing surgery and in no shape to make the long ride home on the weekends, my season tanked! Thank goodness I have the entire firearm season off in just a couple of weeks or I would certainly not be easy to live with for the next year. Hang in there you still have plenty of time.
  4. "My buddy shot a nice buck in the p1$$ pouring rain last year at night." Really at night? "It aint 5-0 and you sure as h*ll aint the po-po" What the heck language is that and what is the English translation? lol
  5. Shot, recovered and soon to be on the table........it's a trophy to be proud of. Nice job!
  6. If it's pouring rain it does not matter how much you practiced, you let em walk. No doubt that deer chasing each other around your tree will get your heart pumping, but in the excitement mistakes get made. Too much can go wrong under the best of circumstances. Shooting deer in down pour rain is inviting disaster, heart aches, excuses and dead deer that have little hope of being recovered. If you can get ahold of the deer search people with their dogs it may be your best chance to find your deer. Good luck finding your buck.
  7. Must be people like to keep quiet about hunting in Webster. LOL....I asked about this a little ways back. Ultimately my wife and I may end up there to be near my daughter. Sooner than later if we ever hear grandkids being on the horizon!
  8. Fifteen yards........ Now that's my idea of the Perfect hike. Lol!!! Way to go!!!
  9. Being away from home is tough for sure. Especially this time of year for those of us with the hunting tradition. I'm only about 4 hours from my real home but it is hard at times. Had to be quite a job offer to drag you from a lovely swamp to a concrete jungle. Lol! I sure hope it was worth it. Anyway, welcome aboard and hopefully visiting this site will help fill the void. Peace
  10. So did you "get it done" or not? Where are the pictures? Please tell me it's not yet another "stuck" and unrecovered deer.
  11. Rome may be considered Northern Zone but it's really pretty much on the most southern portion and as such pretty much like what you would find in the southern zone. In and around Rome is some dairy farming, crop farms, Erie Canal flats, Fish Creek, Delta Lake, and small towns like Marcy, Stittville, Oriskany. North of Rome you start getting into some pretty hilly areas like Westernville, and there are big chunks of State land. That direction you will be getting closer to the Tug Hill plateau where it snows like nobody's business. Lots of deer in and around Rome. I'm not sure of the hunting pressure there anymore since the airbase closed up and all the factories moved out, but if you have access to 100 acres of private land, with a little effort you should do pretty good. Good luck! Hope this helps. Peace
  12. Is this post for real, or are we being baited?
  13. Welcome aboard bnola! Gotta be rough being so far away from home and all that hunting. I like the gator pic. Now hunting them has got to be a blast!
  14. Perhaps it was a news chopper trying to get some coverage for a story on the youth hunt. Or, if it's anything like down our way small planes and choppers are frequently on the search this this time of year it seems for pot plantations.
  15. Hey Bubba I'm with you on this one. There is some land that bordered my property that we had permission to cross but not hunt, and there was this Barney Fife type guy who was all ticked off because he was not allowed to hunt on either that or my property. Well the fool decided to intercept my cousin who was crossing a field and about to enter my land. The guy came running at my cousin screaming at the top of his lungs "hey..hey...stop...stop...I'm putting you under citizens arrest!" LOL He actually got within feet of my cousin and told him he was to "go with me", about a half mile back to the road to wait for the police. Well let's just say it's a good thing he caught my cousin on a good day or it would have ended pretty bad. Swinging from tree tops for twenty years with a chain saw strapped to your side, and able to run up a tree as fast as a squirrel, my cousin is nothing but lean muscle, sinew, and short temper. lol! My cousin just kept walking towards my land and laughed at the guy, who then tucked tail and stormed off in the other direction, whining and crying. To add insult to injury, my neighbor called me and said the guy went to his barn complaining after he tried to have the run in with my cousin, and that he told the guy he didn't want problems with me as a neighboring landowner so he told the guy go someplace else to hunt. We never saw the guy again.
  16. Wife did a ton of research and decided on Acer. They get excellent reviews and we just bought one each for both of us for less than my MacBook Pro cost me. I'm using it right now and so far like it a lot. Even has a touch screen.
  17. Geez the poor guy just asked a question. LOL Why all the tough stuff at him. But while we have our thinking caps on: Hey how about soaking them cotton balls in doe urine and use your grunt call like a blow gun to shoot them out of. LOL Just don't try a snort wheeze or you might suck one into your lungs. lololol
  18. Looks like a guy with his buck knife tried to make a mock rub that would impress who ever found it. And, hey thanks a lot Biz......you just cured me from ever eating chicken again. LOL!
  19. I'm on board with a big healthy 2.5 year old. He is real nice now, but If he gets through a couple more years he is going to be one impressive buck.
  20. I misunderstood Belo. I thought this was a deer you shot. Sorry about that! The point I was trying to make though was that it looked like a quartering away shot, not faced forward. As far as holding high or low goes when your shooting up close, my best advice would be for anyone here to try it for themselves. I shoot with just one pin out to thirty yards but limit myself hunting to twenty and under, usually much under, and when shooting further away hold pretty much on with my current bow (a little higher with my old bow), and lower if real close up. I try to keep my same form and just bend at the waist, but hold low. Like I said, best bet is for anyone who plans to take such shots to do a lot of practice from elevations the same as they plan to hunt and to practice on a deer target at different angles. It really gives you a sense of the real deal when you practice that way.
  21. Belo From the angle of your arrow it looks like you were not only high above, but also just behind that deer with him walking away from you. Correct?
  22. Shooting a deer from 15 feet up, facing you at 3-5 yards is a very difficult shot. Over the years I have taken several deer within yards of the base of my ladder or tree and it's not something I would recommend without a ton of practice on deer target under the same type of conditions. I would never suggest doing it at a deer quartering towards you. It is a recipe for disaster. That close I have one lunged them, spine shot them and even had one run off as the arrow went down through the back and out the chest leaving the arrow stuck in the dirt below him. At that close a range you need to aim LOW or you will shoot over the deer. In fact that close I actually see the leaves on the ground under the targeted spot. At least 40 years I have been bow hunting this has been my experience. The bigger issue now though is where is your deer? It sounds to me like you hit him at the top of the shoulder and passed either through the brisket or chest wall. You may have one lung shot the deer and that can be a real hard find because they can go a long way. If this deer was a nice one or not is really of little significance here. What is important is he was good enough to put an arrow into I hope he is good enough to go look for, and what type of shot to avoid in the future. I hope you find your deer. Good luck!
