  1. its teasing again, rumbles of thunder and some dripping rain. No break in the heat, in fact its worse with the humidity
  2. Before I say good choice, how did you arrive at 308 and 30-06 which aren't all that different. If you said 308 or 270 or 7mm-08 I could see asking. Both calibers your are considering have ammo readily available, come in a variety of guns and actions, different bullet weights, good power, as said these are good choices but its like asking for a piece of pie or a hunk of pie, almost the same. Your choice should take in factors like where you hunt, close shots in think cover or long shots in mature hardwoods or fields. Do you hunt from a stand or stalk. There are a lot of other calibers available with different ballistics that may suit your brand of hunting better. But you certainly can't make a mistake by buying either one. With those the choice of gun is the decision, either cartridge will do the job all on its own.
  3. On the puter yesterday, for the first time I watched deer hunting videos. You have to cull through them for good ones, lots of garbage, but it gets the blood pumping when you see these deer picking through heavy cover for an eternity and you wait for the shot with a lot of 'now, take it, WTF are you doing, SHOOOOOOOOT!!!!' Better than watching three guys in a cabin on posts in Texas shooring deer 150 yeards away on TV. Wonder how they do that. If I move my finger to the safety they seem to notice. these guys are pushing cameras around and shooting from treestands with the sling still on the gun.
  4. Here on Lawng Island we have nothing but heat, and there's plenty to share if you would like me to send some your way. Keeps threatening to storm but so far just a tease.
  5. There is arunning issue with remington on the 700 safety issue. They say they cannot duplicate the problem in testing so they won't do a recall. A said, they changed the trigger mechanism and took a small part out of the trigger assembly. This part in the failures let the firing pin drop on closing the bolt and in some cases it just dropped on its own when on safe. You can find cases and Remington responses all over the 'net about it. Its a shame they let a gun like that get a bad rap. When you consider it was one of the go-to early sniper rifles in Viet Nam it was so good as well as a great hunting rifle.
  6. On the chucks, are the coyote and fox numbers down?

  8. My brother was at our place in 3A & said there was no running water on the property. Logging road washed out from the spring rain and now was a leg breaking rocky stream bed. They've also had no rain for a while. 100 degrees and Beaverkill campsite was packed with people trying to get in the river to cool off. Locals in town had "good" news, the deer population is down & they aren't eating everyone's flowers and shrubs. That sounds just ducky. Whistle pigs are all over, even in our food plot.
  9. Very nice additions to the forum, thanks
  10. I read that article and thought it was good too. Did you read the comments posted after it? They went from the fact-based to the bizzare.
  11. I'll add this, gone beyond the pale now at 10 pages . Let's get back to biz
  12. Wow! Just got back and after 10 days this is still running??
  13. Just returned from 10 days in Carlow, Ireland with my wife's family. Got blown out with sea fishing but, hit the Jameson's, Guinness and Hennessey pretty well. Bunnys were all over and my cousins took a few with a .22, some duck and deer hunting goes on there in winter and they are using the same 7 & 8mm stuff we are shooting. I didn't know you could own anything but a double-barrel in ireland. 89 Euros a night to stay in a 4 star hotel with full Irish breakfast every morning. Its cheap over there now so if you ever planned to go, do it. 10 day rental of an Audi A4 diesel was 650 euro, and the roads and siignage is far better than anything we have here. You would have to be blind to get lost in Ireland. The River Barrow at Milford had 30-lb salmon and 12-lb rainbows and browns, naturally it was the wrong time of year and the river was too high and fast from the rain. The castle is Kilkenny, the urinals are in the men's room at the Arboretum. The Dolmen is a portal tomb, mass grave, from pre-history. The stone is the largest cap stone in Europe. The tower pics are a Viking tower, Ragnal's in Waterford. Waterford was founded by Vikings. The city was once walled with eight of these towers. The town we stayed in, Carlow, was the last city on the edge of the Pale, the dividing line between Viking and Irish rule. So Carlow Castle was often attacked but never breached. Until as psychiatrist went to make it into a nut house and decided the 9-foot thick walls were too big. So he set a dynamite charge and blew 3/4 of the castle away. Irish are known for whiskey and song, not ingenuity

  16. Took my father 25 tears, he could never hunt openning week and even when he did get a chance he was so tired from working two jobs 6 days a week he slept more times than not. Plus he always had one or two 12 y/o kids with him. There are guys in my club that never shot a deer no matter how much we told them about where, when and what equipment, they stuck to their own methods. City people stalking doesn't work.
  17. We had decent brown trout fishing until that storm a few years ago blew out the ponds and leveled the stream out. It will take some time to rebuild but we are close to the Willowemoc and Beaverkill and there are plenty of state lakes nearby for a car-topper. Years ago we had guys in the club that were more interested in the trout than the deer.
  18. Really depends on what you want to put in and what you hope to get out. A lot of what was said here sounds more like shooting clubs than hunting/fishing clubs. Ours has a small house that is exclusively for members from the start of October thru the end of muzzleloader. Then it opens for members to use with their families outside of spring turkey. We shoot in the back of the house, own 160 acres and have access to another 100 of private land. We do two work weekends a year and everyone has to work two days of the four. Its a small, tight group that have for the most part been together since we were boys. There is the usual BS that you get anytime people share something but overall we get on good and have a lot of fun. Besides hunting, some of the guys fish together and we go to each others weddings and stuff. I'm glad to be in this one.

  21. Don't like to hear that about T/C, they had a great product. Nothing like mergers and takeovers to stimulate service and maintain product lines. Maybe they should make a bold business decision and drop the whole handgun line.
