I like those. FYI I tried some of that blind material this year, looks nice but has a smell to it. Deer winded it right off, had them foot stomping, snorting... and when the light hits it, it acts like a back-lit movie screen. Not good in bright sunlight.

I hunt East Aurora, just south of it. Great place, lotsa deer & turkey and some real nice racks. I know one other guy on here that hunts there. I saw 41 deer in three days this year

3A, how was your day? My first time hunting story
Suilleabhain replied to Dorsilfin's topic in Region 3
Just heard one member took a 6-pt right behind the house at my club property. D, you will learn to control your breathing and bring the heart rate and shakes down. Takes practice. Well, you saw deer & horns, things are looking up. -

My club in 3A saw a bunch of does a 4-pt and a 5-pt they couldn't get a shot at. Like anything else, you are going to have to pay your dues before you get rewarded. East Aurora, Erie County I saw 28 deer in three days, spooked another 4 in the dark, 4 were bucks, two had good racks and I missed a standing 60 yard shot at a doe. First miss since 1994 go figure. Sitting back, catching my breath and cursing myself knowing it was a clean miss, no flinch, no scrunched back, no tail corkscrew, just flag up and big bounds out of sight, I turn and her boyfriend is right next to me, so in rut he couldn't care less of me. Couldn't take a shot at him before I did a real good check for hair and blood soooo he got a pass. Then had one more buck coming in at 4p.m. and by the time he eased his way through all the heavy cover all I could see at 30 yards was the white around his eyes and chest. Too dark, had to pass that shot. I sit in one spot 6 a.m. until its too dark to shoot. There's all kinds of reasons to be discouraged, not seeing deer is the last of them. Far as I'm concerned I had a great 3 days, 28 deer, 3bucks, turkey, hawks, owls, and I didn't gut shoot that doe, yes I had a great 3 days -
Islip Long Island, I have a 70' widowmaker leaning on my house, no damage, it leaned over nice & gentle. Lost power for 7 hrs, no rain really at all. This section is one of a very few with power. Niece's house lost the chimney and some roof damage due to a couple of trees. Her in-laws live 200' off the water in Freeport, now they lost the whole shebang. OIl and transmission fluid all over from the marinas, 3 or 4 boats, big ones, on their property. Half the Schooner Restaurant is somewhere in the bay. Other niece's in-laws had waterfront in Wantagh, they lost everything, cars included. Partyboat Miss Freeport 65' is in the street. Ocean Parkway lost the eastbound lanes. Irish Riviera at Breezy Point burned down. 7 beach mansions at Davis Park are in the ocean. Moriches and Shinnecock Inlets are much wider and a few new ones opened. LIRR is just opening hourly service to Ronkonkoma and Great Neck. Boardwalks are all gone. All the sand at Long Beach is in the town of Long Beach, looks like snow in a blizzard. In a nutshell, we're f'ked. I'm working from home and will be for the foreseeable future so my deer season is gone, maybe I'll get muzzleloader.

Best of luck to you all with the flooding. My only problem will be the wind and if the power goes out & I lose my sump-pump. I'm outside the storm surge zone but, have friends in a waterfront trailer park. Small potatoes compared to what I've seen in Sullivan and Delaware Ctys when this happens.

So while all you guys and gals are out getting wet, tired and some frustrated, I was in Florida for my g-daughter's 4th birthday. Good seven days with her, we practically raised her and they had to move in July because of the economics. Nanny is pretty broke up over it so we'll be frequent flyers I'm sure. Anyway, go to Applebee's for dinner and a woman walks in that looks just like Julia Child. 6 foot tall, high heel black boots, black short skirt, she ain't half bad for a 60 year-old. Only problem was..it's a guy. Still haven't gotten over being skeeved at that yet.

Everyone should have a shot at a great deer busted by an even better deer. Best of luck with them. -
New hunters need to be prepared for "after the shot"
Suilleabhain replied to PWGUNNY's topic in Deer Hunting
1st thing youngsters need to learn is; - When you know its dead, unload. - You are shaking to much to gut safely, sit down and relax, fill out your tag and enjoy the moment. - Make sure you know which edge of the knife is sharp. Brother's friend was so jacked up he had the blade upside down and cut himself bad. - Then follow everyone elses advice -
Start your own club and hunt together. Learn by your mistakes, carpool so you can save the cost and not go alone. Experiment with different state land, make some contacts and get permission. Get thrown off sometimes. That's how my father and his friends did it and ended up buying 160 acres of their own after a few years

Get that down here with the geese very often. Hooligans shooting bows at them in the parks. They like to club swans to death too. "My Johnny wouldn't do that" mentality. Should castrate the litle bastards, improve the gene pool.

How long before someone sites a unicorn....with an optional horn.

My Weekend (Subtitled: Upstate folk have it easy!)
Suilleabhain replied to Sogaard's topic in Deer Hunting
I'm with you. Living down-state and trying to get hunting time is hard. Done that leave NYC @ 20:00 arrive at 23:00 up at 04:30 plenty of times. Take care on the ride home, micro-sleep hits hard sometimes. -
Congrats, nice of him to take a bath and clean up for the photos
-
Doc I had my Moultrie stolen this summer myself and that's on private land well away from town. Neighbor or logger

Someone is ready to roll

Wow, thank God you are okay. Been there, my own fault, I know how the ride down feels.

Just one of those days

Yeah well, it is what it is. Hope he enjoys it. My blueberry bushes took but they were under an inch of water from the rain and my hawthorns made it. Forsythia may not have. Guys at Montauk are having tackle taken right off their trucks. One guy walked around the back of his truck and some idiot tried to take his rods from the front!!!

wish I could do that

My problem, I can't find a deer with 3 points on one side. All i see have 3 or more on both sides.

I missed it for 15 years then started again a few years back

Used to use Apple spray and Tink's. Apple worked the first few years until everyone figured out what we were doing. You just had to give us a sniff when we came back in the house. Tink's never worked for me, assuming because there were 10 other guys with it and I never saw deer really in rut during opening southern zone rifle other than 1977, 1994 and 95. So 'methinks I heard a voice cry "Tink's no more", Tink's doth murder chances' and quit using it several seasons ago. With the weather as it looks, and the rut in the past few years around southern opening rifle/shotgun, what do you think about some kind of scent in 9H? My thought is the opener is right between the 1st and 2nd ruts and would probably work better in muzzie season.

Hmmmm isn't dumping carcasses bear baiting and falls into the gray area of mineral blocks and yada, yada, yada that you ain't supposed to do on your 40 acres in Mexico?
