Get used to the heat – forecaster says it’s here to stay
Mr VJP replied to Mr VJP's topic in General Chit Chat
My cars outside thermometer said 101 yesterday about 5PM. ??? -
A few weeks ago I had a big bear come up to me while sitting on my deck at dusk smoking a cigar. I never saw him until he was right under my feet. He never made a sound and only trotted 20 feet away when I yelled at him. He then stood there broadside for a minute before walking away. I think he was coming for my bird feeder. I took it down that evening. This was off Rt 28 just south of Delhi. What town is your friend with the chicken coop in? I hear there are about 7 bears in my area. Just wondering if his place is nearby.

Get used to the heat – forecaster says it’s here to stay

http://midhudsonnews.com/News/Images_things/Accuwx_map_det-Jul10.jpg[/img]

STATE COLLEGE PA – A true heat wave is underway. That’s defined as at least three straight days of temperatures in the 90s. This one is expected to last at least through Thursday before there is any relief. AccuWeather.com reports the core of the summer heat beginning in July will be centered in the Northeastern portion of the U.S., with scorching temperatures sizzling the major cities through the end of August. Temperatures will be above normal from Washington, D.C., to New York City July through August, with many days ranging from the upper 80s to the mid-90s F, perhaps even hitting 100 degrees. "The Northeastern region has a chance to really cook in July," said AccuWeather.com Chief Long-Range Meteorologist Joe Bastardi. "It's possible for record-breaking warmth during the first half of July." Average temperatures bringing uncomfortable heat through the end of the summer could rival some of the hottest temperatures ever recorded across the eastern half of the nation. The area around the Great Lakes will also be feeling the heat. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the "dog days" of summer are the hottest days of the summer season, usually occurring between early July and early September. The almanac puts the timing of the "dog days" for this summer beginning Saturday, July 3, and lasting through Wednesday, Aug. 11. The terminology "dog days" was started by the Greeks, who believed the star by the name of Sirius, also known as the dog star, caused the weather to be very hot.

Lights! How do you walk into the woods in pitch darkness?
Mr VJP replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
I have the thin Streamlight that uses AAAA batteries and looks like a pen. It has a green light on it so it doesn't kill your night vision when its turned off and I think it isn't visible to animals. It does a good job of lighting the path and throws a lot of light for it's size. Batteries for the thing are hard to find, and a little costly, but they last for a whole year, even if used a lot. -

Anyone hunt grouse or woodcock on this site?
Mr VJP replied to Setters4life's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Try entering the cover and standing still for about 15 seconds. They get nervous when they can't hear you and will either flush while you are standing still, or flush as soon as you start moving again. Once you start moving, stop after you've moved about ten yards and wait 15 seconds again. Keep doing this all the way through the cover. Be ready for the flush, especially when you start to move again. And also be ready for multiple flushes as thick cover sometimes causes the birds to covey up, especially in the winter. If the birds are flushing close and not giving you much time to shoot before they fly into the overheard canopy cover, use an open choked 12 ga with a 24" barrel. This gives you quick shooting and open patterns. In the winter, when the trees have no leaves on them, you may want to switch to a 26 or even 28" barrel and go to a modified choke if the birds start flushing further out. -
I have a T/C Hawken in .45 cal from 1980. I've been using Maxi-Balls most of the time with 80 to 90 grains of Pyrodex in it. I've also used patched balls as well as sabots. They all seem to shoot fine for me. But I prefer to hunt with the heavy Maxi-Balls. They go right through a deer everytime.

Welcome! You suffer from a chronic mental illness that is incurable. You will have to live with it until the day you die. Side effects are nice though. Excitement, euphoria, adrenaline, peace and happiness. Not a bad mental problem if you have to have one. ;D

Slug Guns - What do you shoot? What works best?
Mr VJP replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I shoot a Savage 110 bolt gun with camo stock, fully rifled 24" barrel and Nikon Prostaff 2x7 shotgun scope. It likes the Lightfield sabots the best. Groups about 2" at 100 yards. You'll hear great things about a Tarhunt Slug Gun, but the price is way too high for me. ??? Forgot to mention I use this slug gun of mine in NJ as I only hunt rifle areas in NY. -
I only carry my cell for emergencies when hunting. It's a Verizon phone so I get coverage in the woods most of the places I hunt, and coverage on my land all the time. (The higher up the mountain I climb, the better the signal too) I've got it set for phone calls only. No e-mail, net or text options. I don't want to pay extra for that garbage. That's why I have the PC at home. I'm not paying extra for that stuff on my phone. I did have a company paid "Dingleberry" phone at one time. It had everything and was nice to be able to check the weather while hunting. But it can become a distraction when hunting if you like to surf the web rather than looking for deer.

I dunno. I have a sense of humor and maybe you don't? :

Too Many people here in NJ that are just deserving of such an apparatus! ;D That's one of the reasons I can't wait to move to my Delhi place.
