  1. Crooks won't be using the info. Anti-gun groups will. That's the problem. Any way they can use the information to harass, or hassle you, they will. They'll make a site for Mom's who may want to let their kids play with your's. If you are on the list, that Mom will tell her kid no. They'll make a list for employers to look at when they hire someone, or us to see how many employees are on the list. Insurance companies may find it useful in raising your rates. Schools may decide your child is a potential threat while in school. There are all kinds of bad things that could happen if someone has that information and wants to use it in a negative way. NY handgun owners should get together to file a class action lawsuit against the state for any damages that may arise in the future, as well as getting a judgment to stop this from ever happening again. What angers me is the anti's know this information has no impact on reducing crime and will only affect law abiding handgun owners. Yet they get giddy over the abuse they can accomplish with it. You see, to them, you are a criminal. They just haven't been able to get a law passed that says you are.
  2. Can you tell me how much it weighs? Would you be near Delhi NY in Delaware County?
  3. I'm sure it would be better than most slug guns available. It's pretty expensive though. I don't know if I wouldn't be just as well armed with a Savage 210 Slug Warrior and a good scope. Bolt actions tend to be very accurate slug guns too.
  4. Mines the clear stuff that has the consistency of oil. It works well and a little goes a long way. Bought one tube about ten years ago and still have about half of it left.
  5. After training retrievers for 40 years and doing as well as you have, I would think you would already have a source for ducks. PapaBear, sometimes good intentions are not appreciated.

    Who traps anymore?

Gotta hand it to ya Gutpile. I did a lot of muskrat and coon trapping as a teen. Used the money to buy fishing lures and supplies. It's a lot of work considering the hours on the trap line and all of the skinning, scraping and tanning. But it was fun and interesting at the same time. Maybe when I retire and find I have more time I'll get back into it again. But at this time, I could never do what you did when you were going to college. That would wear me out.
  7. Never tried the Hornady One Shot, so I can't say. I've heard of the Pam use in the die, but never tried it. Maybe after I deplete my Lifetime supply of RCBS case lube, I'll try it.
  8. When mine get dirty, I just throw them out and buy new ones! ;D
  9. The guy was very generous in the way he measured the group sizes. If you hunt with a lead sled on a windless day, I'd say you could hit a deer at 200 yards with it. I couldn't help but notice they fired 9 shots at a target with no back stop too. I sure hope they knew what was beyond that target. ???
  10. Drilling holes in any Mod 94, especially a Pre-64, will really hurt the value of the rifle. There is a scout mount made that has a Picatinny rail on it that uses the rear sight dovetail and allows for the use of a scout scope with extended eye relief. It is a very fast shooting setup, perfect for a woods lever gun. It also doesn't alter the gun so it doesn't hurt the value.
  11. Don't believe everything a manufacturer presents on one of their products. It may have taken Ithaca a year to find the perfect ammo & firearm combination to achieve that group, they may have only achieved it once and the gun was probably locked in a motionless vise. Even the most expensive top quality slug gun, the Tar-Hunt, doesn't claim better than 6" groups at 200 yards and they do tell you all the things they had to do to get it to do that. It just shows what the gun is capable of in a controlled environment with the right ammo. No one should expect it to do that in the hunting field in the hands of the average shooter.
  12. A high magnification scope isn't needed for deer hunting because you don't need to hit a spot on the side of a deer that is only a 1/4" in size. With a high magnification scope, if the deer is only 50 yards away, it takes longer to find it in the scope. If it then moves, jumps or runs, it is more difficult to find it in the scope again. Unless you are hunting deer in the open where shots are 300 or more yards, the 3x9 is the best variable for all average Whitetail shooting. In close range shooting, like we get in timber, where shots are 100 yards or less, a 2x7 is a better choice. The lower power setting is needed to get on a deer fast when it's close, especially if it is running. If I were to go with a higher power variable on a deer rifle, I'd use a 4x12 power. But I don't see a need for more than that for most deer hunting unless the shots are always long ones. Another drawback to high magnification is image movement. The slightest movement of the rifle will cause the image in the scope to jerk violently. If you are able to solidly rest the rifle for all of your shots at Whitetail while hunting, it won't be a problem. But 99% of the time, that will not be the case. Try shooting a 24X rather quickly from the standing position and you will see exactly what I mean. If you get a variable in say 6x24, you will be able to use it OK most of the time on the 6x setting even up pretty close. But you're still dealing with a much bigger and heavier scope, and it probably has a parallax adjustment involved on it as well.
  13. The angle of the shot at that close of a range should not have any noticeable effect on the point of impact. If your scope is mounted in high mounts, it might shoot 2 or 3" low at 10 feet or less, but the angle shouldn't matter. Sounds as if you hit a branch or other object that threw the slug off. I base that on the fact the gun did exactly what I expect it would do when you fired it at the deer at 15 yards. But if you're sure you didn't, you need to test it from your elevated platform to see where it is shooting. Doesn't sound like there is a parallax or scope issue to me, since it's dead on at 50 consistently.

    new guy

Welcome to the site and the wonderful world of hunting. Are you a young person? Tell us a little more about yourself so we know what type of advice you need.
  15. Yes. ;D Those were evidence photos from a camp on an island in Michigan I think. They were way over the limit and many deer were not tagged. The big boy was some pen raised buck from some private preserve.
  16. Welcome to the forums. Glad you are on board.

    No excuses

Were you doing it with head shots? Or will a 22 Mag drop a deer with a shot to the vitals? What range were you shooting?
  19. Mr VJP

    No excuses

I would think your trajectory with the 460 would be pretty curved with only 80 grains of 777. You should be able to get the same velocity and trajectory with a 200 grain sabot, or a 240 grain conical with even less powder, say about 60 grains of 777. That should also produce a lot less recoil. True, energy bleeds faster with the lighter bullet, but 1000 ft lbs at 100 yards will punch right through a Whitetail. Any extra energy has greater shock on the deer, but isn't needed to drop it IMHO. I agree shoot what you want. I just want the energy to do the job without a lot of noise and recoil. I hunt with a 7mm-08 too, because I think a 7mm Wtby Mag is too much for the job too.
  20. Mr VJP

    No excuses

Heavier bullets produce much more recoil. I like to use what will do the job without doing a job on me in return.
