Letter to Editor
Early replied to nybuckboy's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Well, King Cuomo here in NY, as part of, or reaction to his SAFE ACT has condoned the use of weapons deemed illegal for possession by New Yorkers in any/all Hollywood productions in this great state. In other words....he demonizes (wrongfully) certain weapons...and then invites Hollywood to glorify their use in whatever gorey production they wish. That is a mistake. I think it would be most appropriate to seek Hollywood's assistance in reducing gun violence....here in NY and elsewhere. To reiterate: Hollywood is only a PART of the problem -

A letter to the editor is the expression of one's opinion....No need to run it by anyone, unless you wish to check some facts. Most newspapers make simple grammar and other corrections without altering the intended message. For the record: I agree that Hollywood is at fault for glorifying gun violence, but they are not the sole cause for the problem. To highlight Hollywood involvement in a letter to the editor is most appropriate. -
WOW!!....WTG Big cat....specs??

No more Ammo sales to NY
Early replied to Jvilla's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Interesting/good question.....Anyone know for sure? -
I have, through a variety of education endeavors, probably enrolled more NRA members than you might suspect...(Despite my disenchantment with NRA for electing the younger, dumber Bush). I routinely update a large collection of friends/associates or the necessity for personal action to protect our rights...keeping them abreast of 2nd Amendment challenges that they should get involved in. I routinely correspond with my elected representatives....sharing my opinions on all things related to the 2nd Amendment, citizen's rights, hunting/shooting/sporting concerns...etc. That said.....Bubba, I still find you to be a major turn off: Your "preaching" does little good, despite your thinking otherwise. You may be a legend, but.....it is only in your own mind!

My last turkey bow kill was with a satellite broadhead, with a star lock washer backing it up....Results were devastating !!!!

Bubba, you keep suggesting that no one other than you is fighting for our rights. Surely that is not true. Rather, it is part of your "holier than thou" act. Please....list, with specifics, all that you have done that we have not to preserve our 2nd Amendment rights. My guess is that you are a big ******** artist!

No more Ammo sales to NY
Early replied to Jvilla's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Despite the lag in getting the ammo background checks in place, you can bet online ammo sales will end on, or before 1/15/14. -
I have never been a great shot with a handgun, but with my Ruger 22/45, I shoot surprisingly well...regardless of the ammo I use. You obviously have a great setup, but yes....do experiment with other ammo.

Check the bore...and the crown of the bore (muzzle end); Work the action several times to see if it is tight and locks up well. With the action closed, cock the hammer and see if there is any "sloppiness" to the trigger. As others have already said....check for cracks in the stock/forend. Such cracks are easily fixed, however, and should not be a deal breaker. Last....check all screws to see if they are marred or stripped...such would indicate "tinkering" that could reduce the gun's value. Hopefully, you will find nothing wrong with the 336 and will return home with a new treasure!

I taught Outdoor Survival Skills as a credit-bearing college course for many years. Two books we liked: SURVIVAL IN THE OUTDOORS by Byron Dalrymple and SURVIVAL WITH STYLE by Bradford Angier. If you can't find them elsewhere, give alibris.com a try.

Late Season Rabbits and Grouse Questions

Good advice......We regularly hunt with single barrels and/or .410's that are choked full....Makes things a lot tougher. -

12, 16, or 20 ga. #6 shot out of an IC choke (improved cylinder) -
Try a TIGHTWAD...or an UNDERTAKER

There is a glimmer of hope in the judge's contention that the 7-round limit places law-abiding citizens at a disadvantage when encountering criminals possessing guns holding more rounds. This argument should be expanded and pursued vigorously: The SAFE ACT reduces the law-abiding citizen's ability to defend self and home, but does NOTHING to control/deter criminals.

Late Season Rabbits and Grouse Questions
Early replied to pauplander's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Grouse hunting is great in the winter (if you have grouse). Just don't go early....they are loafers and stay on the roost on cold mornings. Finding grouse tracks in the snow lets you know they are around and lessens the effect of their eplosive flush...allowing for a more controlled shot (I still miss often!). We usually bag a few grouse each winter while hunting for snowshoe hares. -
Good buy.....Grab it!!

17 is not too cold for scenting, but it might have been too dry. I assume you were hunting on snow. Next time check the moisture level of the snow...by feeling with your bare hand...or drop a wool glove or mitten into the snowand see if it picks up snow crystals when you retrieve it. Don't give up on your dog; there can be days when it is difficult for them to get/hold scent. -
We consider woodies and mallards to be great table fare. Geese, on the other hand, require an overnight soak in V-8 to cut down on the livery taste....thereafter, they, too, are good.
