  1. I third.. Ide like to know what works best in NY soil. Most of the catskill area is very rocky. How will we know what works best over here. Anyone have anything to say about this ??? FYI: This reminds me that the DEC has a program where they will sell you small baby trees and other forage that works well for wild life. I actually had the papers' for it not long ago but if you search around on the web site im sure you can find it.. It wasnt even expensive, and they gave you directions.. I remember a big issue was letting the tree stem grow for a while and keeping them insulated from wildlife with these long plastic preferated tube shaped boxes. Anyone workin a food plot should look into this.. For the past couple of years , I been taking a branch off a fig tree I have here in Brooklyn and trying to make it grow upstate. I think its just too cold, or maybe im just not doing it right ??? Anyone have any insight ??
  2. thats another thing i been trying to figure out lately. aging the deer.. i look for all the tell tale signs but unless its enough trophy to bring to the taxidermist and ask him, its all guessing for me and ill never know if im right or wrong..
  3. im with you john; opener for rifle is definetly bigger in my gang too.. i enjoy rifle season more.. maybe its the colder weather... maybe the feeling of thanksgiving coming up. but rifle def sinks its hooks deeper into my soul. that and a little grappa that we drink every night.. yee-hawwwww
  4. Def. I agree with FAIRGAME> this year you will produce monsters. and hopefully will pass on the genetics for the next 100 years to come. I do however believe that there is some truth to the sayinig " a Spike will always be a Spike" not in the literal sense but more in the theory behind it. Some deer will pass on the small thin antler gene or small bodies gene regardless of what they eat. Others can eat less nourishing food and have big thick mass beams.. Its like the type 1 and type 2 muscle twitch fibers in humans. Some of us will be more prone to building muscle with less protein and nutrients and some of us will have to eat 3 times the amount of pretein to break even with the other type... I hope i dont sound like i am contradicting myself. What I am trying to say is that a healthy Deer heard isnt a Black and White answer such as only Antler Restrictions or Just food plots. There is alot of grey area' s. Some of which , we can help improve with food plots and leaving brushy area's for bedding and some of them are just heriditary and genetic and we cant DIRECTLY change them but indirectly over time, (lots of time) I do believe with time nutrition a heard will improve itself.
  5. I think its a good idea. if it was imposed over the state starting this season, it would be a bad year , but the next year and every one after that would be better and better. Im not saying ive never shot a spike or a less than 3pt rule buck, because i have , and I dont discredit anyone who does. I know the feeling of waiting all year to hunt , and waiting till the last day and finally , the only deer to be seen is a small spike buck. And you give in to the beating of your heart and take it. I know the feelin all too well. And then the thought of passing on the buck , and only to think about your Asshole neighbor. We all have one. You know , the guy who shoots everythingand anything. So you say to yourself , "he is gonna kill it so why not me ?? " yup.... been there done that.. my other concern is , heard mixed things about a reports from pennsylvania. they have had a pilot program about immature deer before NY did , and some say its good some say its bad.. IDK... I think aside from antler restrictions . another important issue is food.. Most NY deer live high and low in the mountains of the catskill and adirondak and cant find a reliable food source except for farms and hunters food plots. if each of us planted a food plot on whatever parcel of land we owned , we would grow bigger bucks.. nutrition is key. mix that in with a antler restriction program and youll be producing larger bucks by the end of this year.
  6. wow. big paw prints. he may have been stalking you guys. thats interesting. talk about coyote's .in cities.... there were a few in manhattan earlier this year. imagine that.. coyote's in manhattan , deer and bobcats in staten island and queens , red tailed hawks in the bronx.. brooklyn recently has had a spike in raccoon and possum incidents. according to a friendly exterminator.. bloomberg may have to open a season.. yaa. right.. just him.
  7. thats sounds pretty awesome. i do know what you mean about hunting alone sometimes, it can be boring and unsafe when your around cliffs and canyons. but that would be awesome to camp out there for a week or so. . but it sure is alot of walking.. 9-10 miles ??? that is seroious.. wow. you ever have any run-ins with a mountain lion ?? i know for fact they have been spotted in catskill mountains .. a farm that i am permitted to coyote hunt on the rancher actually has some photo's of one. from about 100 or so yards away in broad day light.
  8. Fairgame. glad to see you here on the boards. What part of cali. do you live ? how is the hunting out there ??? i know the gun laws are terrible. awesome that you travel coast to coast.

Burlap for concealment . great solid stand its 25 ft, but on the uphill side stand floor to ground is prob about 19-21. steep grade. got to get some pics up of em. . damn raccoons have made themselves quite comfy up there over the winter.. shit everywhere.

  16. I apply every year and was knocked down last year for first choice 4g and second choice 4r . hopefully this year i can get one.
  17. the 700 sps. is a great gun. my brother in laws have one each one in .223 and one in 22-250. a bit heavy to carry around but great reliable gun. what kind of optics do you have on your .223
  18. hey doc. how about 25.06 its light on shoulder and effective for deer. or you may want to consider buying a Thompson Encore. single shot and it has a interchangeable barrels for a decent price.
  19. well. this is hunting ny. and new york represents alot of things. how about a 4x4 deer with a picture of the statue of liberty silouhet in the background or maybe a ny skyline.. i know the statue and skuline have nothing to do with hinting , but its momre representative of ny.. just my 2 cents.
  20. ya man. velcro is not a perfect fit everytime i had to mark off with a white-out pen on the release a straight line across the top and bottom velcro straps so i can align the exact spot for a perfect fit. and it still doesn't feel "Right " all the time
  21. hey burm. i can say this.. the release I have is made from velcro and does not have a strap or belt type wrist harness where you can get the same exact fit every time.. next time around i will buy the kind with the belt type. its hard to get the exact fit all the time with velcro.. it just doesnt feel right all the time and i always have to fiddle with it.. my 2 cents
  22. i thought for some reason you were down here close to orange county doc. didnt know you were up in ontario . anyhow. thats a good idea with the ziplock bag
