    Bear.

My buddy and his neighbor live over in Highmount on rt 28. They had called the DEC and local police officer more than once about the bear problem but to no help the bear did what it wanted to do anyway. I know he didnt check in the woods for the bear that night, because it may have been wounded and violent trying to defend itself.. I havent spoke to him since then but when i go back upstate ill get the resst of the story. He tried to avoid it by cleaning up the mess of garbage and food but he didnt think about the grease drippings in the BBQ, he even used the bleach around his home.. As for shooting it , I personally would deal with the garbage cans , the BBQ, the bird feeder etc.. etc.. but if it displayed to me that it was on its way to come thru a glass door and i had a child in the house and the rest of my family, ide shoot it too.. .. regaradless of the consequences... off the record , i believe the local police officer had said the same. Black bear are usually tame non aggressive and timid to humans unless provoked or with cubs. I also believe there may have been a problem with ths bear or it may have been sick. Either way, if its alive lets hope it doesnt come back for its own good and everyone else too.

    Bear.

Well over the holiday weekend we were upstate enjoying the weather , ATV's relaxation and the food. Apparently the bears were enjoying the rest of our food. We have a bird feeder down at the treeline in the field and about 10:30 last night while i was standing on the patio I heard a commotion in the bushes about 40 yards from the house. I assumed it was a deer doing its normal, evening pass thru and heading to a neighbors food plot up the road. As I stood there and waited for something to pop out I went into the house and grabbed the night vision and took a look and low and behold it was a large bear. I think it may have been a male because of its large head and being without any cubs but there is no way I am able to tell for sure. At first I didnt think it was as big as it actually was, I saw that its head and neck were large but that could have indicated it would have been yound and its body may have not matured yet. That was until I realized that the bird feeder he was scooping was about 10 ft up the tree. After he demolished it and raped every last bit of feed out of it he laid down on his belly for a few more minutes and stood up and gave me a broad side view. Thats when I hit him with the 3mil candlepower light .. WOW. It was HUGHHHHH.. After the light , he just slowly pushed his way back into the woods.Later on that night, at about 3 am. either he or maybe another bear tore up our garbage pales and ripped everything all over the road. My brother in law heard the noise and was able to catch a glimpse of em until it scattered from the outside light. That act made for a swell cleanup job at next morning. We also have a friend who lives right off RT-28 and has a chicken coupe. Last week he told us that a black bear tore up his chicken coupe and ate 3 of his chickens while he was out. I asked him how he knew it was a bear, he said the roof was smashed in. He rebuilt the chicken coupe for the other 9 chicken he had on thursday. Sunday night another break in on the chicken coupe. this time, all but 3 chickens were eaten and the coupe was busted up real bad again. His neighbor actually had a black bear come up onto his patio acting aggressivly and wouldnt leave after the homwowner repeatdly tried to scare him off and scream him away. That guy even tried using bleach around his patio and garage. He called police and DEC a few times.. On saturday night , it again came up on his patio , breaking thru the swinging wooden gate that he locked ( the gate is just a simple 2x4 wooden frame gate to keep his kid on the patio) rummeged thru his barbecue and then started approaching the glass sliding door.. Thats when this guy pumped the bear with a .300 WSM @ 20 ft away. The bear took the shot straight to the chest and staggered off into the forest.. .. Is this normal activity for black bear ? Ive never heard of any becoming aggressive to that point without any cubs around. Usually once you make noise or hit them with flash light , they scatter. This guy isnt even sure if he killed it.. The DEC didnt have any other advice to give him other than storing food tight , garbage tight, using bleach around perimeter and keeping light on at night. Anyone have alot of noticed bear activity ? I know the black bear population is strongly increasing every year but behavior changes too ?
  4. I was upstate this whole weekend.. The nights were great, cool breeze temp. around 58-62. The days were scorching. I took a trip over to Mine Kill State Park to swim in the pool for a while , i was there for about 3 hours. I had spf 30 on and still got a wicked painful sunburn. I just got home and the thermostat in my car was reading 92 degrees.. This is going to be a bad one.. Hope it doesnt last too long.
  5. connectiut valley arms Vs.. Thompson.. . What are your thoughts... I think i remember reading somewhere that CVA was closing its doors and being bought out by another company... wasnt american company.. cant remember too clearly .. anyone know if this ?

  7. RAGE 2 Blade... "It's Like throwing an Axe thru an Animal " love the commercial.. i bet PETA and the rest of the ANTI's get a kick out of that slogan....
  8. had 3.. neither were with my quad.. 1st was about 7 years back , hunting season , took it to the tree stand at the top of the mountain ... 10 minute ride.. while traversing east to west on a steep mountain side ridge, the bike was topheavy on the incline and started to roll.. instead of bailing uphill , i tried to muscle it back level but it was way too late... the quad flipped and caught me underneath it... the handlebar on the right somehow managed to get into my collar area and then dug itself into the dirt taking me and my jacket with it.. it whipped me down with it....... so here i am top of the mountain , 5 am.. dark.. under a quad.... ..can you say panic attack ?? ... took a minute or two to get myself together and to free up my jacket but by then , the carbureated bike on top of me was dripping gasoline on my chest.... to this day i still dont know how i did it , but i actually pushed the bike off of me in a benchpress like push and was able to get out from under it.. i think it was adrenelin.. bike wasnt really damaged.. just a cracked headlight unit.. learned my lesson. second accident was at a neighbors farm... he had a hugh field of high grass approximatly 1000 yards by 1000 yards ... rough estimate... all flat.. .. out of the 1000000 square yards, i found the only dried out pond at about 25 mph... i was just driving and the bike kinda just fell from beneath me.. .. i flew off it and tumbled head over feet ... literally a hole just appeared from no where.. and the weird thing was , the grass in the hole grew even with the grass around the hole so it looked perfectly even... it was like a mini cliff in the field.. bike was mangled.. broken front all around... .. the hole depth was about 5 ft... similar to a meteor indentation... .dont know what it was doing there.. farmer had no clue either... ... i was busted up for about 2 weeks.. sore.. 3rd.. was last nov.. at same prop in gilboa on a incline mountain traveling east to west again, but much slower.. .almost in a weird way, too slow.. i just felt the bike coming up on the uphill side but instead of trying to save it, i just bailed from the up side and watched it slow roll upside down.. this was my bike, the 1st two accidents a few years back werent.. they were my friends... thankkfully , his bike was only about 400lbs.. I was able to get it off of me when it came on top of me... . my quad is about almost 700lbs.. .. ide propably still be under it if i had my quad back then.... so anyhow , it slow rolled and soft landed itself rightside up only to be stopped by a sapling ... .. had it not been there,.,, ,straight run down the steep mountain... ... bike was totally fine,, only about a 1/4 inch scratch on top of upper headlight unit.. other than that.. still brand new
  9. Yup.. its been on for a while.. We were going to compete this year with a coyote my friend shot but it weighed in at a small 26 lbs.. The guy who won in 2009 is the same guy who won in 2010. Both years his coyote's were in the 70 pound range !!!!!!! Two years in a row!! .. Im happy I saves the gas , from where I am in Margaretville its at least an hour - hour and half drive. Next year, I will register and compete , regardless if this guy bring his 70 pounder or not !
  10. Well guys, here goes. I figured Ide talk about some of the new bows that are out there for this year upcoming and last. Maybe some of you can even give me a piece of advice. I am after this season in the market for a new bow. I have to wait till after the season because I am getting married in December and cant swing the $$ right now , even though I'de like to have a brand spanking new bow for October, it just aint possible right now. Im now shooting a PSE NOVA @ 30.5 inches and about 65-68 lbs draw weight. I havent shot many different bows in the past but out of the couple I shot , clearly remember the Matthews Switchback. A friend at the range had one and it was same dimensions as mine. The bow felt like a extension of my arm. I felt like I could hit bullseye with my eyes closed. Everything about the bow I loved, even the sight he had on there. That leads me to fall in the directoin of buying a Switchback but the only thing that is stopping me is the fact that the Switchback is a old bow and compared to the new bows that came out in the past 2 - 3 years, it seems that spending money on a older bow that is slower and has less options wouldnt be the smarter thing to do . In the end I do realize that the only way for me to solve this is to go to the shop and shoot as many bows as I can and see what fits me , before I buy but I am just seeing how and what everyone else out there is thinking and if anyone has shot a Switchback and compared it to any of the new bows and if it feels the same ? The ones I was considering are from a few differet companies. Here they are : Hoyt ALphamax 32'' and Hoyt Maxxis 31'' ..... The Mathews Z7 , Mathews Switchback, Mathews Reezen 7.0, Mathews DXT, Mathews Dernalin , Mathews Monster. The Bowtech Destroyer 340 and Bowtech Admiral FLX... As far as building whatever bow I decide to go with , I do know that I like the G5 Optix XR Pin Sight and a Ripcord or Q.A.D Drop Down rest. . So , Any unput of this guys ?
  11. two years ago I bought a Wyoming Knife from Cabela's and also a String Saw for bone.. The both items cost me about 30 bucks i think... I was amazed at how sharp the knife was and stayed even after 2 deer.. and the bone saw was amazing.. no more hacking at it with a ax and worrying about bone shards or pointy edges.. i sawed through a pelvic bone in 7 seconds flat.. its awesome.. .. I had a Kershaw knife .. it lasted 2 days Lost in the woods.... paid alot for it.. i swore ide never spend more than $50 on a knife again.... if i lose this.. i will resort to orange plastic box cutters .. those things are sharp as hell
  12. 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 4.7 AWD. Limited. I love it, I only wish I woulda got the HEMI.. The 4.7 is not too great on gas.. The 5.7 HEMI motor has that 4 - 8 cylinder shut off when not in use.. gets better gas mileage.. and also , I only have a 4 speed tranny.. the 2nd gear is way too long.. other than that , I love it They just redid the bodystyle for 2011 .. I wish I had the $$ .. That thing is HOTTTTTT... here is 2 pics
  13. Hey NYB.. at least ya got the roof rack... i knew a guy that put a deer in the back seat of a chevy caprice .. legs out the window.. lmao... not even kidding.. i got to find the picture and scan it..
  14. @ DOC.. i believe the same thing as far as cycles.. i think the weather patterns may even play a role aside form predator. btw.. I just got home from upstate earlier today and saw a red tailed hawk circling and circling the air above the house.. .. for a few minutes... then i realized it.. my girl has a small dog , a tea cup yorkie.. its all of 5 lbs.. and she was running around the back yard ... talk about a birds eye view ... (Lunch) that woulda cost me alt of money to replace that dog.. lol now back to rabbits... i must be the most unsuccesful rabbit hunter on this earth.. ive gone small gaming about 10000 times.. never was i able to bag a rabbit.... ive tried with shotgun and .22 nothing.. ive only shot a few from the patio while enjoying my morning coffe.. dom. i got a spot in sterling where i saw a ton of rabbits.. thick thick brush , only catch is alot of ticks ... i had them crawling all over me.. message me for the info if ya want to go

hey dom.. I never had a shot at one, i saw one one time at a friends place in gilboa while i was dumping a gut pile behind a pond next to the house ... he was about 20 yards.. sitting ontop of a rock.. he didnt budge.. it looked forzen... i went to get the rifle and in the the blink of an eye , gone.. once in a while when were at that property , you can hear them screaming in the middle of the night,, (mabye mating ) its a sound that makes your hair on the back of your neck stand up... almost sounds like a baby crying and screaming at top of its lungs.. . but constant.. but here is a story about a friend of mine.. i scratched out his face cause he isnt a member of the forum and dont know how he feels about it . he had filled his deer tag and was trying our for coyote. he posted up over a gut pile and with a distress call.. not there for 15 minutes and out of no where was this cat starring him down at 50 yards .. .. from what he told me , he didnt even see the thing moving while panning for coyotes.... . he just noticed its pointy ears and realized it.. lol needless to say, it was a big cat.. about 30 lbs.. and a 9 inch skull .. according to the taxidermist.. its almost a record for NY

  21. ha.. i had some guy drop his kid off about 40 yards to my right and then gave me a wave hello... this kid had to be part of the junior hunting program cause he looked real young.... aint his fault his dad is an asshole , or i am assuming it was his dad but could you imagine this ???? really wtf ? i was nervous the kid would forget i was there and shoot me.. i made a few loud cougning noises waved my orange hat in the air and left 5 minutes later.. he got me soo pissed i actually lost my direction in the woods while trying to find a new place to post... took me an hour to find my way back once dark fell.
