    Rifle Hunting

I had pretty much the first scenario. I did not take the shot for that reason. I hunted state land for many years with everyone I hunted with in camo. We knew our shooting lanes as we made drives. No one ever got shot at or has bullets buzzing over their heads. I teach this class and I have actually done demonstrations on this and had people hiding in camo in brush piles. and stand up after saying they would take the shot. It is an eye opener. Anyway back to scenario number one. It was by far the biggest buck I ever saw. Across the field broad side and well within range of my 25-06. Due to the fact there was a guy who hunted on the other side of the field I would not take the shot. I think it is a very important point. However, if I were that nervous about using a rifle, I would not hunt with one. Now for a statistic. The large majority of hunting incidents where someone gets shot, it is by someone in their own hunting party while they are performing some illegal activity. You are more likely to get hurt in a tree stand incident than a shooting one. That being said, it does not mean it can not happen. It is a judgement call. You can make the argument to never take a shot unless the deer is on a certified range with a good backstop. And for the record, the blaze orange statement was for you DOC to let you know where this was going to go. Scenario 2 I would wait until he presented a better shot or pass.
  2. You can save some by doing it, but the other part of it is in this great state components are not under the ammo background check. The tough part is finding equipment and components. A lot of other people have had the same idea. The most expensive part is working up the right load for a gun. After you do, the worst is over. I would recommend doing a lot of research on how it is done safely. The thing I put the most money into was my scale. I bought a Lyman DPS which is very accurate for powder measurement. Got a good manual and do a lot of reading before you jump into it

You do realize this is just another rant for blaze orange?

You can make an argument to never take any shot in case some person has moved into the area.
  5. We have the amish problem here also. I have taught the hunter ed class for 25 years and have had a handful in my classes over the years. Since they moved into the area, the deer population has dwindled. A few years a conservation officer was tipped off and he found 27 deer in one barn no tags. they also shot a moose that was moving through the area about 15 years ago.
  6. Oh I am certainly with you all the way. when they pushed the patriot act I was against that as well as every other damn thing that chips away at our liberties and freedoms. If we do not stand for something, we will fall for everything.
  7. Think of them as the suicide bombers doing their part to get gun control. In their minds they think they are dying for the cause.
  8. a great way to get good parking spaces.
  9. a great way to get good parking spaces.
  10. maybe he has a seizure disorder and just likes sunglasses.
  11. People should no think about entering other peoples unposted land. they still own it
  12. A lot of out of state places already will not sell to you if you are from ny now. Not sure about the felony part call the hotline and ask Sent from my LGL35G using Tapatalk 2
  13. Ok then logically explain how one gets on to bitch then the guy who is getting bitched about suddenly appears to defend himself. Who told him the guy was bitching. Then when callled on it they both vanish . I can not wait to hear this one Sent from my LGL35G using Tapatalk 2
  14. When i posted about my trespassers i got called those names. Sent from my LGL35G using Tapatalk 2
  15. Ok I smell a rat here. These two are working together to get the word out about this guy. Suddenly after a complaint post this guy appears and pushes his business. Seems way too fishy to me. How did the guy know someone was dissing him? Take it all with a big grain of salt.
  16. Most who post on here from my experience are more in the southern part of the state where hunting is entirely different than us northern hunters. I see it differently and I hunt near the Gouverneur area. I have woods I have swamps and I have fields. The bog difference is we do not have the deer, and patterns here are different. I am lucky if I get a dmp every 5 years as they are very restricted. The activity here seems to generally be about 10 days to 2 weeks behind what almost everyone on here sees. But again the deer population makes a huge difference. Hell if I see 8 to 10 deer in a season, I am doing well. I have ample food cover water and arrangement, I just do not have the deer. Hence we have to also hunt differently. to be successful. The tough part is getting guys with 2 or 3 dmps and chances at extras in November to understand how hunting here is. They are way to used ot seeing a lot of sign and activity. If most hunted where we are, they would give up after a week of seeing maybe one or two deer in that week. I have had the past two weeks off and I hunted every day but yesterday and have seen 5 deer in 2 weeks. It is entirely different here for sure.
  17. As stated the deer still move. My bigger concern in hunting is warmer weather is game care after you get something. As I am sure you all know, it requires better cooling techniques. I use ice in the chest cavity for while I am still at camp. Warm windy days have been a better set up for me over the years. I will say in warmer weather the mid day activity seems to slow down though. earlier morning and closer to evening are better. Holy crap it is warm and windy. Off to camp I go.
  18. In the first place if you want to talk gun hunting. In NY it is illegal for any one under the age of 12 to even handle a firearm. When we do classes 11 years olds can not shoot at the range. So how could a 10 year old hunt given the law. Do you think NY state is going to remove any firearm restrictions? Hell they just took a major step to decrease our rights. When I started it was 14 for small game 16 for big game with a firearm 14 with a bow. You still at 16 needed a supervising adult until 18. I have said I am for lowering the age due to other interests and we might have more hunters. That was selfish to use that reason to increase numbers. The more I think about it, I do not want it lowered. Try teaching a class of 11 and 12 year olds gun safety and watch the maturity level. The percentage of those who seem mature enough at that point to handle a firearm safely is not as high as one would think. If a child has an interest, keep it going and foster it. But lets not push them into it too soon.We do bot trust children to drive until 16 and we think they can handle a gun in an actual hunting situation? Knowing gun safety is one thing. Having the maturity and ability to grasp the situation is another.
  19. Myself, when I was looking last year, I bought the savage axis. Very accurate smooth action and 325 out the door with a bushnell scope which I switched out. Just a suggestion. Of the two you mentioned, it would be the venture
  20. it is the first part, you are a dumbass.
  21. Where did you get that? If you are going to try to pull the crossgun argument that a lot more lame than your normal posts. You remind me of a liberal. Not real thought just drink the kool aid and keep spewing the foolishness and then when you have no more what you think are real points, you either go stupid or make personal attacks. All this actually shows is how really uninformed you are and are trying to play with the big boys. I know google is your friend and that is how you pretend to know so much. But that is ok. So because I stand up for gun rights, that means I do not own a bow or hunt with one? I am very diverse. I have a recurve bear grizzly 45 pound that I have been real successful with shooting instinct. I know how to hunt primitive. During the early and late muzzle loading season, I hunt with my cva flintlock or my tc sidelock open sites. I understand and support primitive weapons. I do not support fools who think their compound is anything near primitive but want to pass it off as primitive and not allow something by your own admission is more primitive into your precious time. Trust me if this govt tries to take away archery equipment which by the way a cross bow is, I will be out there protesting then too. Now before you want to judge me and tell me what I stand for and my values, you should know what they are. Your dumbass remarks only show how little your opinions mean to me as they are not your opinions. They are the NYB opinions and they have their hand up your butt your lips move it is them talking. If you had a real opinion or idea of your own it would probably scare you. This is my last post on here as I see several other people have told you the truth and you did not listen and try to run them down too. I am not going to give you a platform to do so to make yourself feel better. Have a nice day and good luck
  22. That is the best you can do ask if I have a gun rally to attend. Actually i do not attend gun rallies. I organize and attend anti safe act rallies across the state. I do this even for people like you who are really clueless. You might want to think about getting involved yourself. That just shows me you know you are noot making sense, and have no logical response to my statement. MOLON LABE
  23. then you just made an argument for them to be allowed in your precious elitist time. According to what I read here they are more primitive than a compound, so maybe they should be allowed and compounds not allowed.
  24. which has what to do with lowering the hunting age. All parents think their kid is the exception either the star athlete who will be a pro or they expert hunter and shooter at the age of 5. If the age were lowered, which if you look I said it should, most parents would still think it should be lower just for their special kid. I had to wait until 16 to hunt big game and 14 small game. Relax it is happening slowly.
