Been out with the rifle since 10/26. Weather has sucked constantly. The hunting gods seem to smile on you guys from the south with nice weather for opener. That is ok, it will be nice weather for me also. Every weekend has been nasty so far. Here in my area, we have a week of muzzleloading before regular season opens. Since we have had this special season, I have taken that week off and hunt pretty much alone. My favorite tradition is having the guys all pile in on Friday for gun opener. Shooting the breeze, catching up and a big meal the night before the "opener", even though I have been hunting for a week already.

It does not matter how you handle it, you are now on his radar. Be prepared for the next round.

Once you shoot one with the 270, you will never look back. I have never shot one with a shotgun, but quite a few with a muzzlelaoder and a lot with various rifle calibers. Bang dead either way.

wheelie man I hope you find the deer. Do not let the arm chair hunters here discourage you for doing it right. I bet most hunters would give up not say anything and go after another one. I respect your follow up and taking the deer even if it is not fit for consumption any longer. That is what an ethical hunter does. Good luck

you can not practice for nerves. When I have one coming in and I ma getting ready I talk to myself internally. I say wait for the good shot, then think my whole routine and follow it. The shot is as much mental as it is physical. You have to get the mental part in check and control it

I am curious. How many responding actually hunt with a rife. I know the warnings where a rifle bullet can travel miles. Look up some ballistic charts and figure out where you would have to shoot ti get a 2800 feet per secind bullet to get it to go that far. It is a noise. They do not associate it with being shot. We have actually cut wood and have deer come to see what was going on with the saws running. The guy next door to my property has to sight his rifle in the sunday afternoon of early ml weekend in the north. He shoots half the afternoon, and we still see deer. I usually sit on the ridge next to where he shoots. He leaves at 2 the deer hit the field at 5 or so. About 10 years ago or so, I was hunting a piece of farm land I had permission to hunt. It was early ml season. I shot a nice doe with 8 other deer on the field at about 230 pm. I took care of her drug her into the tall grass and got back in the stand. 20 minutes later, there were 4 deer back in the field. Human activity more than noise will spook them.
