I just finished reading "The Big Burn" and I would highly recommend it. It isn't really about hunting, but focuses on TR and how he and Gifford Pinchot established the national forests. If you are interested in public lands and conservation like I am it's a great book.
-
I'm going to be using it in Idaho and they don't allow a 209 ignition, along with other restrictions which the northwest model meets.
-
I bought a CVA Optima Northwest about a month ago and so far I'm happy with it. I haven't hunted with it yet, but I'll be out in a couple of weeks. Hopefully I can tell you how it performs on an animal.
-
No debate needed here. I'm always amazed at the size of those things when you get close to them. Do you need to pay extra if you want to keep the meat too?
-
I struggle to see how shooting a farm animal is considered "hunting", but nice job. Lots of high quality meat right there.

For some reason that link isn’t working for me, but the real threat to hunting isn’t from the animal rights activists, because even the vast majority of non-hunters aren’t anti-hunting. The real threat is from our current congress trying to sell off our public lands which will eliminate hunting and fishing access to millions of acres of land currently open. Even today a minority of yahoos are planning to let the Land and Water Conservation Fund expire. So I hope everyone is harassing their congressmen (and women) and senators to let them know how important hunting is in this country for us and future generations. But my guess is most people just want to whine on this forum and not actually get involved.

Here is a Vermont response to that article. I thought this was pretty good. http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/opinion/columnists/lawrence-pyne/2015/08/01/vermont-ranked-third-worst-state-deer-hunting/30997363/

This guy clearly doesn't like the snow and cold of the northeast. I'd take that any day to hunting in the heat and humidity of the south, but he is right on with hunter density and the yearling buck take. Is there anyone who would honestly say NY is one of the best states for hunting? It's realistically in the bottom 50% I would say.

Looking for a new bolt action rifle
d-bone20917 replied to Billdogge's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I don't get the 18" barrel on the Adirondack either, that's just to short. I really want a Montana in either 300 WSM or 280 AI which both have 24" barrels. Kimber makes a great mountain rifle. -
They will generally let the wilderness areas burn freely as there is no concern that people will lose their houses, and they recognize the vital roll fires play for wildlife habitat. At least in the west. Since August 10th there have been 20 new fires on the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Five of those fires are in the Frank-Church River of No Return Wilderness and are being permitted to play, as nearly as possible, their natural ecological roles in the wilderness.

Please feel free to highlight the section you are referring to. What I read is him saying the "grand experiment" involves plugging the mine to stop the 500 gpm from flowing out, this will be seen as a success in the short term "hallelujah", but the 500 gpm will continue to build in the mine and fill up interconnecting mines. Eventually (within 7 to 120 days) the pollution will find another way out. At this point the EPA will say the plan failed and propose building a water treatment plant. If you read this as the EPA will intentionally dump 3 million gallons of this crap into the river, just to show the public that it needs money to build a water treatment plant, I'd be interested to see what section you are talking about. This guy is pointing out that the EPA plan is basically stupid because it's a short term fix. He seems to imply it's a conspiracy that they are intentionally implementing a stupid plan to get the treatment plant. Maybe that's true, but I'd like to hear how he would propose to clean it up. It's estimated there are 500,000 abandoned mines in the west that are similar to this one. What is proposed for those? The EPA didn't make this mess in these mines, but if they are tasked with cleaning it up they will need taxpayer money to do it. Even if that means hiring clean-up contractors that won't make stupid mistakes like this one.

Of course this is a very misleading article, which one would expect from the sites Papist visits. If you read the actual letter to the editor, nowhere does the geologist state the EPA was going to intentionally breach the mine and cause this sort of disaster. Does anyone think that would be true? They look like total a-holes. He was pointing out the plugging plan was a short term fix and the pollution would eventually find it's way back into the river. However, it was already leaking into the river which is why they plugged it in the first place. The guy seemed to know what he was talking about, it's to bad he didn't offer up his ideas for a solution. He was just concerned about the tax payers having to pay to build a treatment plant. How should the EPA clean up all the abandon mines without spending any money?

Check into Idaho. It has the best draw odds in the lower 48, but the tags aren't cheap if you do draw as a non-resident.

Why would this keep you from hunting in Colorado?

What do you mean? It's on the internet....

Wolves are bad news... http://www.theonion.com/article/study-wolf-attacks-still-leading-cause-of-death-in-32170

The Adirondacks doesn't need any deer population control. They should just put all the wolves in the southern zone.

Why That Lion Hunt Matters To All Hunters
d-bone20917 replied to Mr VJP's topic in General Chit Chat
This is the best response I've seen. http://themeateater.com/2015/thoughts-on-african-lions-big-game-trophies-and-hunting-in-america/ -
So apparently you slept through all the hate launched at Melissa Bachman and Kendall Jones when pictures were posted of them with their legally killed no name lions?
-
Do you think the mob that is attacking this guy would come after you or I if they saw us posing with an elk or deer that we killed? I don't. There is just something about certain animals that spark outrage in people, and the lion is one of them. Charismatic mega-fauna as Steven Rinella would say. I bet even if this guy did everything legally (allegedly) and killed this lion he would be getting the same attacks. The difference is, hunters would back him up. No one wants to support a poacher, except apparently Ted Nugent.
-
I agree 100%. The guy would rather throw money at a hunt so he doesn't have to know anything other than pulling the trigger or releasing the arrow. I'm sure he's learning that to much trust in a guide can get you in trouble.
