  1. It happens to all of us. There are days when we could have a machine gun and still miss.LOL
  2. Sunrise here was 7:09am, first shot was taken at 6:45 saturday. Sundays first shot was 6:40am. These are the little things that tick me off big time. Was out duck hunting last week and had some come into my setup 3 minute before legal shooting time and let them fly away. Maybe Im crazy but at least whatever I get is done by the rules that are set for ALL OF US.
  3. Anything that is Polypropuline and wool blend work great . I also picked up a wal-mart knock off of underarmor for cold weather. That works really well for a top. Gray top, deer don't care what color underwear you have.LOL They are windproof and keep you very warm and dry. Just remember no cotton anything on your skin and that will keep you warmer.
  4. Haven't missed one in twenty eight years..(Thank you Lord!) and some great memories. Always excited every year. Its like an Old Guys "Christmas Day" full of anticipation. Crazy though, I still have a tough time sleeping the night before. I guess if we loose that feeling we would stop hunting...LOL.....NOT
  5. My guess is the ground may be to wet to get the tractors on. They also like to have a certain moisture content in the corn before they harvest. I have seen corn stand until the ground is frozen and the snow is flying.
  6. Well that makes three of us. Hunting stateland has it own challenges;ie people taking small deer, deer being highly pressured, finally have a pattern and another hunter sets up in their bedding area, rude and abnoxious hunters, thats just to name a few. I too dream of having my own piece of heaven, but don't know if it will materialize with the economy the way it is. Hope this thread inspires some good feed back.
  7. 8G waiting for the big one. Good luck to all, and lets be safe!
  8. Went out yesterday AM. Pulled in to park, big doe standing in front of me.LOL Finishing settting up my decoys at 5:15 and the geese were honking. They started leaving the swamps in the dark with 25 straight minute of flying overhead all in the dark. 6:31am is legal shooting time here. 6:28 six mallards fly into my decoy set. They stayed for about a minute and flew away. (teasers) Tempting but nope! The rest of the day was very slow but I did manage to get a ring neck duck. They have us patterned. Deer are hanging with the duck hunters and the ducks must be with the deer hunters.LOL
  9. Out at the Tonawanda WMA this AM. It was like a ghost town. A dozen Rudy ducks and only a couple of flocks of canadas. No ducks to be seen. Whats up??
  10. Not any movement in 8G. Doe bleated and grunted in a decent size button buck (100lbs) six feet from the stand. Let him walk when I seen the top of his head. Told him to swing by and say Hi in another 4 years. LOL Hope he makes it through the gun season. Times like this that make you wonder if letting them walk is the right choice when hunting stateland.
  11. Great job to all! Nothing like the feeling of harvesting a deer with the bow!!
  12. Take it back! I would think the vacuum that surrounds the liner has a leak. Any stainless steel thermos will hold the heat at least 6-8 hours. Even the small one I have is good for 6 hours. Has to have a defect.
  13. I was out in 8G saturday. Rubs and scrapes have started. Not seeing anything.
  14. Been there done that...Just keep getting some time in the woods.I have a couple of friends that stopped completely when the kids came. I now have a choice of what to hunt and when. But I wouldn't give my kid time back for anything! Enjoy as time flys when you have kids.
  15. Deer hunted Saturday and saw nothing. BUT....i did grunt and doe bleat in TWO hunters. Welcome to hunting State land..LOL For those of you who are blessed with your own property....Count your Blessing!!! It definately adds another challenge to hunting.
  16. Just remeber last year at this time, tee shirt weather, high winds and the deer weren't moving. At least chilly and snow there is a chance they will be up and moving.LOL GOOD LUCK!!
  17. Well went out duck hunting today, all set to use all the knowledge I got here. Only one problem, no ducks showed up..LOL Thats hunting.LOL .... But some geese did. Bagged two with 3 shots. (one follow up shot) Went to a full choke and #2 pellets (Kents). That combo really rock em! Thanks for all of your help Gentlemen!!. I'll let you know what happens next time I'm out for ducks. Be safe and good hunting to all.
  18. Mike Rossi..... A more open constriction? So you are saying use an IC choke??
  19. So there is a broad range of opinions here as far as choke tubes go. I went to the sporting goods store to get an IC choke . The guy there said get a full choke as you want a larger concentration of pellets in the bird. Really confused now. I guess its kind of like trail and error and finding out what works for you.
  20. I use a strap (w/buckle) or small ratchet strap with a carbiner. Snap my pack to that. I use to hang it from my climber seat but had it through the seat out of balance and the seat move when I got up . Scared the crap out of me, so never again. I pack in lunch, thermos, water bottle, ect. the strap is by far the easiest without putting any holes in the tree.
  21. Daily limit question. According to the way its written its says "no more than 4 mallards (no more than two of which may be hens). " My interpretation is : I can take four male mallards. In that four mallard limit , you can only take 2-hens.
  22. Hi Mike, Just watched the video. I would first start of by saying I know none of my shots were at those far distances. These guys were really shooting far out. Time to take the gun out , pattern and practice practice practice. Secondly....Next week I will be out of the boat standing, instead of sitting and shooting. I know I had some swing issues sitting. I am also going to put a stake 30 yards out to help with the perception of distance. Alot of things to work on didn'y expect such a learning curve. I wish I would have done this earlier in my youth. But man this is exciting. Kind of like getting buck fever again.LOL
  23. Honestly, I would tell you 25 to 35 yards out. I can see there eyes when shooting. I know I have to do my decoy set a little different to get them in a little closer. But they were coming in. (was awesome) Operator error, I am humble and that was my first thought. And how do I correct it. I need suggestions on how you got better at this.
  24. Ok, had a great duck opener. Plenty to see and shoot at ,only one problem, only one in the freezer. This is my first season duck /goose hunting. I am shooting a mossberg 500 with modified choke and # 2 steel shot.(heavy metal and kent) I hit seven birds, splash in the water,(out of range for another shot) by the time I can get out to them, they recover and fly away. Had only one that was dead at the scene. Do I need to lead them more?? Different choke tube? I am a fairly decent shot 17 out af 25 for trap. Maybe not focusing enough (it really gets the heart going when they come in). I need to figure this out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Something to get me in the right direction. and I know practice ,practice practice. Thanks Guys!!
