  1. I don't think I have any dedicated skinning knives but I do have some I prefer to use for that job. This is an example of a great design that originally came from George Herron. Geno Denning was taught by George and is said to have been his best student. This is a Denning #1........... This design works great for skinning and dismembering, IMO. Plenty of knives can get a job done, that's part of the fun.
  2. Damn Joe you dodged a bullet on that one. Glad all ended up OK, lesson learned I'm sure. In 1990 I was a passenger in a friends Ford Ranger. We were headed north on the Rt 400 expressway here in Erie County when my buddy fell asleep at the wheel. We had hunted spring gobblers that morning and our day started very early as we left his place at 3:00am and had hoofed it all morning. Although he killed his one and only gobbler that morning via my calling, it could have almost been our last day doing ANYTHING! We didn't roll it but went off to the left the left shoulder, across the culvert and JUST missed a concrete collector. My buddy then collected it AFTER he woke up and got it headed back onto the hardtop road and we slowly got back up to speed. I had been asleep for 15 minutes or so before the "event" and also woke up when we started doing the "off road thing". To this day, 25 years later, it is still almost impossible for me to fall asleep in a vehicle while a passenger. It is a horrible thing NOT being able to sleep when you need to after driving your share on a trip. I rarely get sleepy anymore as a driver and if I do, no sweat, I pull over............... Glad you guys made it out in good shape Joe. Stay safe.........
  3. I-81 I think it is.....?? Yes, I agree. There were some looking folks in that wreck, lots of twisted junk vehicles now! I couldn't imagine that happening around me......my first instinct after being involved would be to bail out and that would probably be the WORST thing to do.
  4. Well done! What a beast, congrats to your brother on a great animal.
  5. I saw that Red..................................... I'm going to the gun show, maybe. I see it goes Sat & Sun on Rt 5 in Clarence.
  6. I'm probably in the minority here on this but to me, one of the coolest things you can EVER encounter is a barred owl replying to you and then he/she goes into that monkey type call. You spring turkey hunters know what I mean! Oooo, aw aw aw aw.......or something like that. It starts with (as Dick Kirby used to say) "who cooks for you, who cooks for you all........." Then the monkey call starts. I've had bull elk bugle in my lap (20 yards?), whitetail bucks going NUTS under my treestand and gobblers shaking the entire woods only yards away but the call of the barred owl is just amazing to me. I love it!
  7. True enough but stock design and of course bullet weight can make a difference. I just got my father a Kimber Montana, .308, it weighs 5 lbs 2 oz out of the box. I put a Leupold 3.5-10 in Talleys mounts on it and I think it goes about 6 lbs 4 oz now. I was considering getting the Managed Recoil loads to sight it in and for pop's to hunt with. I couldn't find that ammo (and I was chomping at the bit to shoot it!) so opted for some blue box 150gr Federal ammo. I was very pleasantly surprised at the recoil from the bench. He'll have no problem with it and he just turned 75 in December.
  8. Sometimes (more often than not) I'm a bit slow on the trigger.
  9. WOW.......that is a low price. If I spot one in LH and the timing & price are even remotely good, I'm scooping it! Guys are going bonkers for them.
  10. The screech owl is so small they would be easy to miss! Maybe 6" tall?? Seems as though I have heard quite a bit more barred owls also wooly. Seeing them is another thing.........
  11. Growie mentioned an owl that I'd never heard of before; a Pygmy Owl. I Googled it, wow what a cool little thing! (no relation to our resident Pygmy here though, AFAIK........ ) I had an encounter with a owl years ago while calling fox with a friend. We were just kids back in the mid 70's and were honking on a Burnham Brothers mouth call when a great horned owl just about took the hat off my buddies head in a FLASH. It was one of those things that you will never forget........... Another cool owl story happened about 6-8 years ago while tracking a wounded spiker ( ) one night. I had a flashlight and my buddy had a Coleman propane lantern. We were in the red pines and only 30 yards from the dead buck and my buddy flashed his lantern up a bit and there in front of us at around 5' of the ground, sitting on a branch was a screech owl. He just sat there for about 20 second just mere feet away from us, wondering WTH we were............he then lit out, off to enjoy his night. THAT was another cool encounter. Please note, NONE of this is Brian Williams'd.
  12. I was at dinner when first got a chance to read this then made a quick response. I just re-read it................... SAY WHAT? Soooooooo Kenmore and N. Buffalo get more snow than Amherst, when? And then Batavia gets it after a big hot air mix? I can't remember too many (ANY) times where Batavia ever got any more snow than we did in Amherst EXCEPT this past November storm. http://www.city-data.com/top2/c464.html Batavia gets around 70+ inches a season.
  13. Philo...... Oh I know it but I'm only about three miles as the crow flies to the west of it and I figure I measure what they measure. Obviously I know how things vary around here. Also, as far as record keeping goes for the National Weather Service the only thing that is officially measured is there.
  14. If you recall, a couple days ago I started a thread on the snow piles around my area: http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/26603-snow-piles/ Funny thing, on the 6pm news tonight (WIVB Ch 4) they started the news off with an interesting fact; at the Buffalo Airport NWS reports 21" of snow on the ground at 9:30am this morning. The last time we had that much snow on the ground was 1/8/2002. 13 years ago! That confirms what I was thinking that we have a PILE of snow on the ground. Hard to believe its been THAT many years but the numbers don't lie!! They also said that that measurement was two weeks after we had the all time snowiest week (82" in a WEEK) in Buffalo history. Of course this is at the airport where things are officially measured, NOT Wooly's snow globe home. All this snow and SUPER cold temps could really do a number on the deer and turkey you'd think. Hopefully we get a good thaw here PDQ but it isn't on the horizon.
  15. Really, you didn't think I knew the name? And you'd be spot on, 100% absolutely correct-a-mundo.
  16. How can that be? We've had so much single digit temps and even below zero for a few weeks now.
  17. I don't think we have had piles of snow like this in quite a while. 24" or so on the level ground...........piles at the end of the driveway are 5' easy. Parking lots are up in the clouds! I don't see any relief in sight........actually we are supposed to get another couple inches tonight and somebody said we could get a another big dump Sunday?? Ugggghhhhhhh..................... How much in your yard?? PS....I talked to a friend in Denver tonight, it will be 62 tomorrow.
  18. I have a good one for now, he only charges $25 to do a transfer. For now he isn't doing handguns because he didn't renew his license. He thinks he'll renew it but not surprisingly, the amount of paper work and hassle associated with it might not be worth it. I encouraged him to renew as giving in to the bastids is what they want...................
  19. And non-preserve pheasant hunting. Pretty easy on them though!
  20. Absolutely on the dog, she knows usually before me.............!! The noise they make when they flush or fly by close is very distinct. Thank goodness we don't have to differentiate between male & female.
  21. All good help, thank you. Sometimes I wonder if the SOB's at Verizon purposely slow the system down now and then in their veiled attempts at getting me to switch to FIOS. Strangely within a day or two the FIOS literature shows up in my mail box...........coincidence, I don't think so. I wouldn't be surprised if someday there is a big class action lawsuit against them and they have to pay zillions to the folks they boned. I'm probably dreaming................
  22. Any interest at $225..........?? Oh and I probably have a sling to go with it too.
  23. Good heavens why do so many stay here and not move to PA?
  24. No, I never shot one but I have started to pull up and then chuckled to myself as I lowered the gun!!
