I'm sure it varies by county and town but my understanding is the interlock switch is ok, but having a tie-in into the panel without one is not. Don't quote me on that haha. The kit is pretty easy to install without an electrician, but I had him do mine while he was in there.

For those reading this I want to throw out a few things to consider. The dedicated circuit solution above Pros It's a lot harder to overstress your generator as you've hopefully spec'd out the size of your generator to power the circuits you've selected, understanding that if they feed rooms you still need to be careful of what's plugged in. No need for free slots in your panel Cons No flexibility to cycle anything else on or off The units themselves are usually over $300 Can be a little messy with wiring as you have to tie in additional wiring from switch to each breaker Now the interlock kit that I posted above Pros Cheaper ~$50 (give or take the added cost of a dual 30 amp breaker) Flexibility to turn on and off every breaker in your home (see below) Cons You need 2 free slots in your panel You can overstress your generator if you're not careful by turning on and drawing more power than your generator can handle. The system itself isn't smart, your house acts like it's on the grid and of course running an electric dryer or stove is possible but a bad idea. The math here isn't super hard, there are many handy calculators out there to determine peak (this part is important) draw for appliances and add it all out to spec the size of your generator or in reverse, understand what your current generator can handle. I like this because in the summer I don't' want my pool turning green so I'd like to be able to cycle it on and off here and there while having to maybe turn off some rooms for a while when doing this (load balanceing). This same thing can be done with a transfer switch above, but for a unit with more circuits (like 7 instead of 5) you're paying more. Then of course you can get a generac lg or ng system that automatically turns on and runs your whole house even the A/C haha.

yeah for a commercial/industrial setup like that you're easily at that price.
-
everyone's "a lot of money" is relative. I put this off for a long time because $1300 was a lot of money. It still is, but it's not putting me in debt. And for $1300 including generator, parts and labor to keep my meat frozen and my family warm, there's something else I can skip on. just my .02. PS dont buy the generator now or during disasters. They go on sale.

I don't know all the rules and codes, but I do know the interlock is NRTL approved and for $40 is good piece of mind you don't accidently do something stupid and backfeed to the grid, potentially injuring or killing a lineman or feeding your neighbors house. I audited a line company down south once and they explained they have all sorts of protective measures in place to prevent them from the idiot who leaves their main on and backfeeds, but I still feel good about having the interlock for what little it costs. I'm not sure what's legal either, so why risk it?

I'm also lucky and happy to have a wood burner. We burn about 2 face cords anyhow on the weekends in the winter as I love a nice warm wood fire.

I started the generac route for the same reason. I was quoted at $6k, plus their annual "maintenance" and I felt that the cost benefit wasn't there. Instead I made some very, very detailed instructions on how to run the generator... which I think would still require my dad to come over if I was out of town haha. One other thing about the generac is sure, no need to worry about gas going bad or running out, but you're reliant on the ng grid, which I think is down/limited or struggling in texas right now.

Yeah I'm technically a Penfield resident. Best of both worlds with better school and town taxes. But I identify as a Webster resident as my mailing address is Webster. And in 2021 you can't tell me how I can and can't identify lol. I would say that the freezer is something that even a few good coolers might not be able to overcome. I'd hate to lose a ton of good meat during a bad spring or summer storm and be reliant on stores having ice in stock to not only keep my meat cold, but frozen. So even a cheapo harbor freight small generator for the fridge and freezer and some extension cords would be a good investment in my opinion.

I had a coworker help me, but I imagine most would charge $200. You're looking at another $200 (depending on length of run) in supplies. this is what I have (although not the same model) and you have to get one that fits your make and model panel https://www.amazon.com/Generator-Interlock-QOCGK2C-Breaker-Indoor/dp/B08K36F636/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=generator+interlock&qid=1613481975&sr=8-3 basically it makes it impossible to backfeed the grid (and harm a utility worker) by turning off your main feed in order to allow your generator to feed in. You will need 2 free 30 amps slots in your panel and then add the outdoor connect, the connection cable and then of course the proper gauge and length (pretty expensive btw) of wire to connect the panel to your outdoor inlet. https://www.amazon.com/WELLUCK-Generator-L14-30P-Receptacle-Weatherproof/dp/B08GLJRR4K/ref=sr_1_8?crid=3NLVGBWUGMMZH&dchild=1&keywords=generator+plug+30+amp+4+prong+inlet+box&qid=1613482045&sprefix=generator+plug%2Caps%2C183&sr=8-8 Sounds like jerermy has a setup that only energizes some of his circuits which is the right thing to do if you want to be sure you don't run more than your generator can handle. For me I just did the math and made a list of what could and couldn't go on (like electric oven and a/c). You would also need this setup if you don't have 2 free slots in your panel.

I have just about the exact same setup. I even put my portable in a little rubbermaid shed thing with a 13 gallon tank of gas (storage only of course) next to the transfer plug. Mine runs to an interlock so I can select circuits on and off on my panel. Ironic thing is I did this all (about $1500 for me with an electricians help) after that bad wind storm a few years back and we haven't so much as lost power for 10 minutes since. Where I live in webster most of the lines are buried so it'll be another doozy to knock it out, but like you it's something I told myself I would never let happen again and would encourage everyone to at least get a small portable and a setup that allows you to wire up your furnace (please no suicide plugs) and fridge and freezer.

It's amazing the lack of coverage this is getting. I've long been off the MSM train but I guess kinda held out a little hope that post Trump things might return to a little bit more balanced even if skewed left. All CNN is talking about when I flip through the channels is trump. it's like their ratings depend on it (because they do). Yet here you have a major scandal where State democrats are even asking for action to be taken and... nothing? the guy was praised for covid and won a freaking emmy. Now it's like, uh oh another democrat who we all praised isn't so innocent.
-
ah gotcha, that makes sense. I use a rib spreader and cut away most of the flaps too once I get them hung.
-
man you go the extra mile in field dressing. Don't you worry you'll get crud in there during transport prior to hanging? Sorry to detract from the beautiful buck, just genuinely curious.

Ok how about this thought then. A good hunter will be successful just about anywhere you put him or her. On that we both agree. An average to poor hunter can be more successful in better habitat. It's not to say LI is easy (I've never hunted it, only visited it) and so this statement is ignorant. But maybe scent and noise aren't as critical? Is it easier to scout 5 acres than 500? I think we could all probably agree that just filling the freezer would be easier. The question comes down to mature bucks. If I weren't lazy I imagine there are some studies out there that track number of hunters per zone and correlates it to average antler score/points? At the end of the day I do think we're saying the same general thing. But perhaps I'm leaning more towards favoring certain deer killed in certain areas as greater accomplishments than you are? Like the Hunting Public guys vs Lee and Tiffany for example. Lee and Tiffany are good hunters. I just don't hold the same amount of respect I guess? Right, wrong or indifferent.

you are entitled to your opinion. I don't see a world where heroin, crack, meth and cocaine become legal. Shrooms? Maybe. For sure there are those that abuse things, just like those that abuse alcohol now. But like you said, they have a history and it's always been illegal. So what would legalization change? PS crossbows are the gateway into no archery season at all! hahahah -

You may be surprised at the number or "illegal" weed smokers that exist. And there isn't any evidence to say that legalizing it will lead to a significant increase in habitual users. If anything, many will substitute their far more dangerous pain killer opioids and consume less alcohol. I don't think you're going to see some army of zombies, despite what some news outlets and websites are telling you. Yeah, I don't want anyone shooting MY deer! -
Rinella has famously labeled scoring of bucks as the golfication of hunting. Interestingly enough the scoring system's roots were conservation and the first system used by biologists and wildlife officials to manage and understand population health.
-
don't you think those dak's bucks were pretty bad ass though? and i agree with everything you're saying btw

no? I guess reading has failed me. -
me neither, but after a few beers I'd give the old member Sam Potter some real serious props for those big woods bucks. Props to the guy on LI too, as you said it comes down to the hunter but deep down I do feel one fits my "vision" of a hunter more. This is a flaw that me and many others have and I'll admit to that. I think a lot of guys back packing hunting elk out west view the NE tree stand hunter the same. It's not right. It's not fair, but the narrative is there and I find it hard to even deny it in myself.

enlighten me obi wan. What is the snowball that turns into an avalanche with the legalization of marijuana. It's been legal for years in many states and what has happened or will happen that you're worried about? -

because it's 2021 and you think the world is going to end if people smoke weed, but are more than happy to drink bourbon which has killed millions of americans and ruined families for centuries? got it. You sure seem like you don't want drama by posting everything you do. -

It is not a big deal, but like I said it does push some good quality stuff further down. Let me use an analogy. When you search google, more often than not you probably choose one of the first few searches. When's the last time you did a search and went to page 2? And yes, when I start my day with a cup of coffee and want to see who killed what or who might have plans this cold weekend to coyote hunt, I go straight to unread as those aren't the only topics I'm interested in. But maybe that's just me? -
mmedf if you're looking for a long cheap right now play. The science is really cool here.

I agree with that too. Albeit, I don't even think the urban hunter would argue that the somewhat tame and abundant deer aren't easier to a degree. Hell, I have land up north and down in the ROC and I would be the first to admit hunting the big woods of the Adirondacks is much harder.
