  1. eh, they've said that for last 7+ years though.
  2. thought'd i'd recap my Saturday for you guys if you're interested. Wanted to get to bed around 9:30 on Friday, it'd been a long week. Didn't really get to sleep till almost 11. Alarm was set for 4:00am, but who was I kidding? Especially with one tag already punched. So I snooze the alarm and end up getting into the woods a tad before 7. This was ok with me. Typically in my woods I get opportunities right at flydown 6-7am window, or sometime after 9 in the fields. I make my way back towards the fields taking my time, clucking here and there but not trying for any shock gobbles. Around 7:15 I near the stonewall and hedgerow that separates the pines from the fields. I approach very quietly and slowly and through some brush I see some brown objects not 10 yards out from the wall. I get the binos and sure as shit one is a decent tom in full fan. I am literally 40 yards away. I take off my decoy bag and spend the next 15 agonizing minutes inching, commando crawling and cautiously making my way the next 10 yards to the wall. I now have a shot to the field (west), and the birds are about 40 yards north. The stone wall runs north-south. I can make out objects, but there's brush concealing the birds. I'm not sure if they will come into the pines and give me a 5 yard shot to the east or if they will continue in the field. Eventually I'm convinced as they work their way south that they are staying in the field. I belly slide like a snake over the rockwall and am fortunate to have a small forked sapling that is the perfect gun rest. the birds are now invisible behind the brush that is in front of me. They then appear, but have started to work their way into the field and diagonally away from me. wtf... They are at about 40 yards and still not clear of the brush. I make out 4 birds. 2 of which are jakes, a 3rd unknown and a decent 2 year old Tom. Man do cut corn fields mess with your id skills or what? I wait a minute or so for them to make a move, leery of calling and spooking. When all the sudden they start moving briskly. They were spooked. Not terrified, but spooked and I know it wasn't me. Dangit I think. coyote maybe? I make some yelps and they stop, but they're not changing their minds and they disappear over the crest of the field and out of site. I hadn't even setup shop yet and figure i'll give it 10 before getting in a spot. When out of the corner of my eye comes the neighbor. ahhhh I see now. Not a trespassing issue, but a miscommunication. What was a "hey I might try turkey this year and let you know", was confirmed. I had been really lucky the last 5 years without any competition. oh well. In a way I'm glad i didn't punch #2 on my second hunt, also less than an hour into it.
  3. you're a recurve archer and i'm not, so i have no reason to dispute your claim; so question instead. Don't they make those attachments to use if you wanted?
  4. for what it's worth, just about any piece of hunting equipment has the ability to add modern tech to it. http://www.lancasterarchery.com/bow-accessories/sights-scopes-peeps/recurve-sight-pins-apertures.html what we choose to add is generally up to us. I have a fiber optic site and dropaway, but no stab. some monkey tails but no mounted range finder. Generally speaking the big advantage of compound to recurve is the ability to hold at draw and the increased performance associated with that. While the compound is much more forgiving and effective, it's still not as apples and oranges as the verticle bow is to the crossbow.
  5. technically our woman do the same once a month as well. If not "bred", they "shed/drop" an egg with the lining. And if NO egg drops, it's time to get another job
  6. I’m usually good with deer, but with turkey I too am a guarantee. I think I drink more coffee and I KNOW it’s because I’m up and moving more. Which is good, because pooping out of a stand is an art [emoji23] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. A must have in every hunters pack https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Campers-Toilet-Paper-Rolls/dp/B000JFTDPE Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Don’t disagree one bit. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Today I learned that the hundreds of acres of turkey woods that I had to myself, I no longer have to myself [emoji17] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. good luck bill, but as a side note. Passing up implies you had an opportunity.
  11. another vote for this vest. picked it up last year. I think the pockets could have been better thought out, but the kick stand is absolutely money. No need to find the right tree.
  12. 20 gauge at 40 yards is a decent poke my man. heck i'm shooting 3.5" mags out of a 12 lol.
  13. there is a story going around, and i've done zero research to follow-up on it, that these were part of an illegal operation. And if so, we as law abiding gun owners should be glad they're not going to end up on the streets. If not, I agree that there's nothing wrong with owning that many guns, even if it causes one to raise an eyebrow.
  14. I fully expect it to take another few years, but I will be out tomorrow morning, bright and early. I'm already having the dreams (last night) where my gun wont fire and then i finally get a shot off and miss and then when i do get him he's like a small jake no bigger than grouse lol
  15. i think i like this one https://www.etsy.com/listing/601178363/amm-red-oak-turkey-fanbeard-mounting?ref=related-2
  16. here's an example, but i dont like that this mount is plastic and gets some pretty poor reviews https://www.amazon.com/Mountain-Reproductions-Master-Turkey-Mounting/dp/B009FG9A7E/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=turkey+mount&qid=1557322831&s=gateway&sr=8-4
  17. I have my beard and fan "curing" at the moment and I have an HS Strut plaque, but this Tom is special to me and I'd like to include the spurs somehow into the mount. There seems to be limited options online. What do you guys do (if anything) with the spurs from your bigger birds?
  18. well that's a little bit of a spin...
  19. dude, very cool story and I completely know the feeling after rolling one a few years back that i probably could have caught up too if I moved my ass. There isn't much sweeter than a bang flop.
  20. I got here and became so confused that i stopped reading
  21. So last Thursday my dad tells me to come check something out. In the middle of his lawn, not near any bushes or trees is this turkey egg (i believe) embedded in some moss exactly as you can see below. Just like someone plopped it there, but I dont believe this is normal for a hen. We're thinking perhaps a predator dropped it? any thoughts?
  22. absolutely outstanding sammich, and all the motivation i need to wake up at 4am and attempt to slay another woods chicken
  23. Been some good discussion on this at the national level. Share the woods is all good and well and I'm for it. But doesn't it grind your gears a little that hunters pay to protect these tracts of land, and recreational users don't? And i'm not just talking tag sales, but the pittman robertson act as well. How many of the granola munchers do you think are anti-gun and have no idea that recreational shooters, not even hunters fund the majority of conservation efforts that they enjoy? I guess some states are looking to introduce a backpack tax, but nobody expects it will pass.
  24. congrats to your buddy. hope he wasn't wearing that blue hat in the woods
