New rifle.. What scope??
Five Seasons replied to Al Bundy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
you know I don't have my rifle in front of me, but I put my vx3 on 3 years ago I think and while I wasn't happy with the price of the leupold rings, I don't think they have a logo on them -
How do you figure out who is the best deer hunter ?
Five Seasons replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
it creates a false sense of someones life too. Do they post the deer they wounded or just the one they recovered? Do they talk about the job they didn't get or only their promotion? FYI I'm 35. I was in college when facebook started and was only for college kids lol. -
PA Girth Chart vs Live Weight Comparison
Five Seasons replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in General Chit Chat
during gun season, especially opening day we always weigh and hang. typically there's 3 to 5 deer taken and everybody takes a guess before the weight. No prizes, just bragging rights. I can honestly say I haven't been more than 10 pounds off just hoof judging weight in quite a few years. Hunt enough deer from the same area and aging and weight guesstimating gets pretty easy in my opinion. -

is it that nice hard crusty snow or soft wet soggy snow? different coefficient of friction needed -

I kind of think I know what you were trying to get at... but just "being in the woods" doesn't make you a good hunter man. One could even argue that better hunters spend less time in the woods, and one could certainly argue that being in the woods and NOT BEING ON YOUR FN PHONE or taking deer selfies, is an even better hunter. I've hunted 20-30 times and posted live from the woods maybe 4 times, most of those after the hunt recaps. My father has forgotten more than I know about deer and he doesn't post on the internet. Is he a bad hunter? Your reality is twisted. geez -

if we all felt this way, the world would be a better place. It's unfortunate though that the crossbow thread brought out some bad apples who felt the need to show the size of their dick and knock other members for theirs. This goes far beyond deer hunting of course and is really more of social media in general. I dropped off facebook in the fall too. Instagram is a happier place. -
putting it before or during archery will sort of kill the "surprise" factor of archery season. Putting it right before gun opens will ruin some of the fun of opening day when the deer don't know what hit em with all the guns going off. just food for thought.

This will go against the grain of an online forum where we readily share pictures and stories, but I've done a bit of a 180 this year and I think I'm enjoying it more. I've shot some deer and have only shared with family and friends. And the end result has been me feeling better about what I shot, how the hunt went and my overall season. Nothing is going on the wall, but no yearlings were shot either. I think the next step is probably to stop looking at other peoples deer and think "gee I wish that walked by me". But I'm getting older and seasoned enough now where jealousy isn't really part of my hunting experience anymore. The season isn't over yet, but one take away I personally hold up there is that I wasn't busted this year. I had deer look at me, but never bolt or change their pattern. I had a doe a few weeks ago come in downwind when it was 15-20 mph gusts. She stopped and sensed that she didn't like what she smelled, but never stomped or blew, just slowly backed out. I wasn't blown at, flagged at or even stomped at. For hunting highly pressured land and sitting somewhere in the range of 20-30 times, I am very proud of this as a hunter. I'm equally as proud to not have lost any. Lost a doe on what I chalk up to being a non fatal brisket shot last year and so far that hasn't happened this year. Can't say all kills were double lungers or hearts, but they all put meat on the table haha. -
kind of my thoughts too, but I know they've just started grizzly hunting again (or are trying to anyhow). The tag numbers are extraordinarily low, but in time they should grow. Elk are on my bucket list for sure.

I'm not thrilled that these are made in china, not because they're lacking in quality from what I've experienced so far, but because I really do try to buy american when i can. But they were $128 on black friday and I couldn't resist. I am used to my small light nikons that were like 10oz, and these are 20 something. But the trade off in weight and size is worth it I think, especially with the harness. I think I'm most likely to really see the benefits turkey hunting with a much larger FOV and better clarity, so I will be able to get eyes on target much quicker. Something I've struggled with before. https://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-diamondback-10x42mm-binoculars-d241.html- 10374 replies

interesting read. it's sad to see that they were actually bigger than the rocky mountain elk. I guess I wonder what is holding NY back if PA has had success.

i bet CT doesn't have those areas lol.

Five Seasons replied to Al Bundy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
you are right, $500 isn't too bad in comparison to a vx3 that goes for around $400. I have to wonder if a good pair of binos or spotting scope wouldn't be money better spent though. You can bring whatever weapon you have with a competent scope and not have to buy higher end scopes for all your guns. Plus it's versatile for other game and scouting etc. -

ditto. both dad and I use one of those. $40 iirc and still going strong many years being stored out in the cold garage. Occasionally check with weights as well. Even uncalibrated your'e within 5 lbs in my opinion. -

fine for personal records, but not really accurate for comparison. wound loss, trimming loss. are you capturing flank, neck, ribs etc? -

sent to my cousin. thanks for sharing -
there are probably only pockets where they'd do ok in, not being an expert I'd assume it'd be the same areas inhabited by moose and bear currently. Are elk native to NY?

Southern Zone obviously. Discuss

exactly. I'm not sure what the obsession is with locking threads. Even if it wasn't mild, it's entertaining. The same folks wanting to lock it up also defend some of the blatantly racist threads and respond with "don't click on it" so I guess I'm confused.

had a good sit last night. Really got to test my new vortex bino's in some low light conditions in the pines. For the black friday sale of $128 shipped these diamonbacks are impressive. Of course anything is nice compared to my old nikon 10x32's. I am going to get a harness for sure though. I had 2 deer come through at about 80 yards. One was a shooter the other not so much. I didn't have a great shot and with meat in the freezer wasn't going to risk it. I believe the same 2 deer came back in later at bow range and I realized the bigger of the 2 is a huge bb i've seen a few times this year, in fact the 2 have been a pair for a while now. The odd thing is that this bb doesn't have very pronounced nobs. My dad and I are sort of wondering if it might be a busted spike. It's clear in bow range that there is something there, but certainly not clear that it's a bb. Also wondering if it's one of those sexually confused doe. Anyhow I let him and his smaller sister walk. The smaller sister might not get a pass during front stuffer season as I really want some extra meat to try my hand at snack sticks and sausage this year.- 10374 replies

sort of my point. A little self restraint will keep us from getting those laws passed. I get that every year some of us take a smaller deer than we wish for whatever reason (time, sickness, busy that year, bad luck etc) and that's why i'm not a big fan of ARs. To openly boast about shooting deer that have yet to see the earth fully orbit the sun is just confusing to me.
-
aww man, this thread went from entertaining with a slice of funny to kind of mean and shitty on page 13-14
-
how king andy of you. Don't like it, leave right? Listen man, I'm not sure anything I ever say to you will matter. You are who you are right? But what's very clear is that the DEC is heavily interested in pursuing AR's. Now i'm going to venture to guess you're not a big AR guy, so maybe you should see the writing on the wall with their "let em grow" campaign? Or you could bury your head in the sand (or bible) and just ignore it until it becomes law? your choice of course. PS You need to stop looking at this forum as your data point for crossbow support, statistically it's irrelevant PSS You didn't respond to my abortion comment.
