  1. I think the outdoors thing for me is about comfort lol. a nice heated or at least sheltered garage or barn is just nicer. Buckmaster, I don't understand why people don't make that 3 minute phone call. Sure the system is frustrating at times but the dismissal of it doesn't help anyone. I hope that changes.
  2. I'm not a fan of his politics. But blanket statements like that (I know you're being sarcastic) from either side is what's wrong with American politics. we can't even pass the commonsense laws as a result.
  3. that is disappointing because you've dropped some doozies! mine is probably the cotton mouth that crossed my path in Mississippi. Those things will chase you and all I had was a bow lol
  4. that's why I rarely bring it unless it's real wet. it would clang against my gun sometimes if traveling in some rough terrain.
  5. I've never understood the "conservationist" hunters who are anti-global warming and put up such a fight on these types of initiatives. there's no debate that lead ammo is bad. But we view it as an NRA issue? Stop letting politics cloud your view. Do some scientific research before you spout off and then report back.
  6. I don't disagree that poaching and tag sharing or non-tagging takes place across the state. I do believe however that it's probably less common now than it was. Mostly I believe this due to generational shifts in thinking and how much more pressure social media and others drive how "uncool" it is. Where I feel that 20 years or so ago, many hunters still felt they could "do what they wanted" in the woods. I feel this is supported too by the increase in bowhunters which tend to be a hunter with a softer footprint. I believe there is more respect for deer now than ever before. Heck, some of us spend hundreds of dollars to feed the things I want to be clear that I'm not dismissing it. I believe there's some real bad apples sprinkled throughout the state and those real bad poachers probably have a dramatic local impact. But far and wide a few shared tags or untagged deer isn't making a substantial impact to harvest numbers. And any one small group of poachers wouldn't affect an entire WMU. just my .02.
  7. to me that's the point in all this. it's also about how the person is engages in it. For me, skeet is an activity because I'm casual in it. others may compete for medals. Golf is also an activity for me because of how infrequent I play.
  8. I report all mine, but so long as there was a tag I wouldn't quite put them in the poacher category.
  9. I have that exact same chair lol
  10. my vest is pretty light and has a butt cushion which is probably all I need it for. it flips down quickly or folds up with magnets. I think my vest was $40 from gander. It does make me feel like a soldier heading into combat with all the calls and stuff hanging off lol.
  11. Here's how I look at paying for something I don't "use". 1. it's an animals life. I have a family of 5 but I don't need the 7+ possible deer that state allows me. 2. eating tag soup for a few years to put a head on the wall doesn't seem like a waste. 3. I cherish above all the time I get in the woods. the tag buys me that "right". Sure I can just go for a hike, but I like to hunt. So even if I don't harvest a deer all year I don't view it as a waste. 4. till it changes, every dollar of your tag goes to the conservation fund. Money well spent in my opinion.
  12. I don't see anyone losing their sh!t. It's March in NY. It's an interesting discussion.
  13. I invision deer walking around with military style head gear to "improve their site". I can see the marketing now. Fool those stupid humans with "DEER VISION"* *not guaranteed or proven to improve vision. Detect fake pee with the FAKE PEE SNIFFER! Never let another hunter fool your little head into thinking there's a hot piece of doe ass near by
  14. in most places you can shoot at least 5 doe. If you shot 5 good eating doe and no horns, you still feel that's a waste?
  15. well when you put it that way! lol
  16. This morning's weather gave me some pretty good turkey fever. Which usually means looking at gear online while I'm stuck in the office. What's on your list this year and why?
  17. you know I'm not a liberal. You must be a liberal if you can't take a little ball busting. a 63 year old man with a museum of heads on the wall can handle some flack from his 33 year old god son.
  18. I believe hunting for food is a right. And while modern times do not require it, and my venison ends up costing a lot after gear and time, for many it doesn't. It's good quality organic meat. You would have more of a revolt than the safe act and many animal rights groups would be claiming victory. Our state may not be perfect, but our deer season isn't broken.
  19. There is nothing wrong with your view. But I do hope you're not naïve enough to think you're not in the minority. I love horns. Wont hide it. But I haven't shot a buck in 2 years because I refused to shoot yearlings. Plenty of doe meat in the freezer and that's just fine. I have an uncle who will pass mature breeder doe and shoot a 3 point because he "has to get his buck". He is not the only guy who does that, we all know a few. And he's within his rights to do so. Some day I hope the ball busting and guilting I give him will "educate" him to let the little guys walk
  20. see I disagree a little here. As others have mentioned I've had plenty of hunts where I didn't get a deer or bag a bird, but left the woods fulfilled. That's what's great about hunting. Your measure of success is your own.
  21. When I think of athletic hunting I think of Rinella from Meat Eater. But again I think that you can participate in a sport and not be an athlete and vise versa.
  22. trust me I'm with you. I've done well for myself in my career by putting in effort. I don't believe in trophies for all, I believe the best rewards come to those who work for them. We're aligned. So the question I have for you is this. Knowing people are becoming lazier, that younger generations crave instant success, lawyers are making land owners more leery and more and more farm land is sold to developers... do you not think hunter numbers will continue to drop? And if you agree that they will, do you think an effort to enact ARs wouldn't help the average joe? I'm not speaking specifically to this bill. again, I'm on the fence. I'm not promoting ARs. I just wanted to point out that I feel I understand why it's an issue that wont go away.
