I like your thought, but a spooked deer and a death run are very different scenarios where 1 is intentional, the other accidental. Also the death run is an animal with literally no sense or logic on its mind. I hunt smaller patches of woods, but if I was that close to a road or park I'd be a little cautious, and not just because what Rob posted about, but recovery rights and other issues.

that's interesting because I paid $10 to update my address and $10 to add a gun. Why would a new card on nice plastic that uses color ink be free?

that doesn't sound very fun

How to tell a friend he isn't doing it right.

and there's nothing wrong with that approach. But if you have friends, I'm guessing the circle is small and furthermore you may be considered an a55hole amongst them. I tell it how it is too, but there is a time and place to have some compassion and tact. I have liberal friends. I choose friendship over politics when things get heated. Not everything has to be a fight. If chas approaches this like a big dick, he could be out a hunting spot. Is it worth it? -
1. what is a muck farm? 2. did you guys buy this land for hunting?
-
just to frame this a little. I've had 2 cc permits in 2 states. NY took me the better part of a year and all the signatures, cop visiting my house, purchase of a gun upfront and a judge approval. no recert. MS was about 6 weeks and only to carry cc. you didn't need it to own. it was at the dmv. you got fingerprinted, signed some stuff and didn't have to "register" each handgun. but there was a 5 year recert. I don't hate a recert and $10 doesn't hurt me all that bad. I hate all the other nonsense NY puts you through.

How to tell a friend he isn't doing it right.

I agree and disagree. Are you blunt with your wife when she asks if she looks fat in her dress? Point is, despite what we say, dudes can be sensitive. There's not a whole lot of things more manly then killing and butchering a deer. So a guy that might not be doing it right can be touchy. Someone new to something and asking for help will be receptive. A veteran hunter can be very set in their ways and bluntly showing him he's been doing it wrong all these years might not be the route I take. I agree with the ball busting/subtle hint approach. For example. You're both drinking beers and he's skinning his 4 pointer. You see he leaves a big chunk of meat somewhere. "hey bro, look at all that meat there. Let me show you my trick". He might tell you to f off, but I bet next time he skins one alone he remembers that method. -

does he bow hunt? that's when I see the big guys. They really only get shot with gun if they're bumped or a hot doe. -

2 thoughts. The first is regarding meat yield. There's a chance he might just be weighing his chops and steaks and not including ground. There's a chance he doesn't ground at all and that could be the difference. There's a lot of meat in the neck and front shoulders that some guys waste, and of course can be lost buy shot placement. Second thought is that this guy sounds like a killer. And honestly that's his choice. If it's his land and his tags he can do what he wants. But someone who shoots yearlings isn't after big deer. They may "want" big deer, but they're not committed and honestly it makes me think the meat excuse is just an excuse to kill. I don't have an issue with a 300 win mag being used. If I had the money I'd own both a 300 win mag and a 270 so I could have better rounds for deer and bear, but I don't so I went with the 06. The thought that he thinks they're the same is not so far off as in both will kill deer about the same in the right hands. The reason guys pick the 270 over the mag is simply comfort and if they develop a flinch from the mag, accuracy. So the right guy using a win mag isn't any worse off then the 270. Both will do enough damage to the shoulder to lose about the same amount of meat. Finally, if he's asking for advice I'd give it. if he isn't, let him do his thing. -
2016 - 2017 Predator Hunting!
Five Seasons replied to grampy's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Honestly wooly, my intentions are pop control... so if the tracks disappeared I wouldn't be bummed. Our yote population is pretty moderate but not severe. They're not hunted hard if at all, but the deer have been taking a beating so it's one thing I think I can do to help. I also counted at least 6 fox during deer season which is up from the 1 or 2 I tend to see. I don't know if I'd shoot a fox... I find them kinda neat, but I know they're not helping my turkey season out either. a fox mount would be sweet. a 30-06 fox mount might take some talent -
that link core posted isn't a town website. the town website makes no mention. it being crowded doesn't surprise me.

I know. but the 06 is something I own. I don't have the money for a new rifle and scope to shoot yotes. Heck I still don't know if I want to buy the e-caller lol. t shot? -

yeah until I have money to buy a .223 (and ny kinda killed that dream) I'd be utilizing a 12 gauge or 30-06. cant imagine it's worth skinning those. -
does anyone know if you can hunt thousand acre swamp or empire park?
-
Larry, you lost me on those last 3 sentences. what's funny is there was a nice 8 pointer in my back yard a few days, and early on 2 smaller bucks and a bunch of doe. One morning on why to hunt there was a decent 8 dead on 5mile near ridge. It's funny where these things can live. I hunt in Ontario. Don't get me wrong, the hunting is still way above average. my father shot a real nice 10 and multiple opportunities at other bucks. I passed small bucks as well and just didn't have lady luck during bow. The issue was with gun season. I've never heard the pressure from all around like I did this year. More and more hunters are in there and the bucks disappeared from cams and only doe showed up at night. Has me thinking I need another spot to hunt. I have great land in 7J too, but it's a 90 minute drive hard to get out for a weekend to stay with grandma when I have a young family. I understand that, my point was that I could show my drivers license and maybe get in if it was worth it. seems like those numbers are low and I wonder if it is.

ha we're close for sure. I'm off rosebud. just south of friar tuck. if you live in watersong I'm egging your house.

apparently you don't know wolc. Let him show you his 100 yard crossbow heart shot and you'll be a believer.

so a hungry yote wont eat another yote? I don't know if that makes sense to me or surprises me considering they'll eat the heck out of a gut pile. -

what do you guys do with dead yotes? I'm not hunting fox, and main goal is pop control. Just leave em? -
I'm off 5 mile just south of ridge. Like I said technically it's Penfield but Webster mailing and schools. The area I hunt in 8F is getting more and more pressure to the point of bow season really being the only viable season and the doe population dropping. I'm just looking for another spot to take the pressure off. Fill the freezer and maybe get a crack at a park buck. Main goal being meat though. thanks for the help Larry.

Anyone still doing this? Worth it for some doe meat? I technically live in penfield but have a Webster mailing address and Webster schools. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
-
I'm sorry but the pic of that buck makes it worse. Let em grow, shoot a doe. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
-
By low stress I mean, if I don't have success I'm not as bummed about it as I am with turkey and deer, especially when it comes to wanting to put meat in the freezer. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Thanks for the advice guys. Watched some videos last night and as with anything there are certainly the ability to get expensive and serious here. I've always been one to do it right or not at all, but was really hoping for the ability to not have to buy a lot of new gear. I might try some daytime for giggles and maybe morning before I start adding up the price tag with lights and stuff. Just looking for pop control and not much more.
