why can't we just talk about what bothers us? Every topic or thread would get boring if we all just agreed and didn't speak our mind a little. There's no harm in it. Yet everytime someone has an opinion we're told we're not allowed to speak our minds and should just let people hunt. Well welcome to the internet. Where opinions are like assholes. If you don't like a healthy discussion then an internet forum is not for you.

Poachers and the people who don't report them

what regulations are turning hunters away? didn't we just add crossbows? didn't we just extend the bow season? didn't we just decrease the setback rule? -

doesn't matter if they show it on the news. it's viral on the web. More people get their news from social media than the 6:30 news. Other than your grandparents and mine who aren't going to change how we treat these situations, the right people will see it. -

I don't know what the fines are, but I know they're in the hundreds and usually not the thousands. And that's before you can plea it down in the courts. Look at how severe the drunk driving charges are. You don't think that's helped to reduce the number of drunk drivers? It averages around $10k after all the legal fees. You're telling me that thinking about a fine >$1k wouldn't help? You'll never get them all, but you might get some dirtballs who start thinking twice. that and we need more boots on the ground to enforce the laws. -

I also disagree. So now I'll wait for Bubba to go off in his usual fashion about me.

i believe the penalties just aren't severe enough. -
when it's warm you're right. But from all that I've read and practiced, you should really only skin and quarter the deer. Let it in a cooler with the drain plug open for a few days. That shouldn't take the average guy more than a few hours with cleanup. Even better is to let rigor set in. I'm told that actually helps destroy the lactic acid and adrenaline built up during the death run, so butchering too soon before rigor can be bad too. Just saying that i've killed some great deer thanksgiving morning. Always have them back in the barn and hung up by noon. Change clothes and enjoy the meals while I get to tell the story to all the extra ears gathered around drinking. Butcher him up the next day or on the weekend. Special memories I'll never forget.

my point was that after all the court dates, lawyer fees, having to go into hiding as a target is put on your head for defending your property; is it worth it? I am not saying we should just roll over and take it. That's why I said it's a tough decision. But as a parent of 2 young boys, I'm not sure I'd stake my life on protecting material possessions that can be replaced by insurance. And if I do survive my life is forever changed. Look at this cop for example. His life is changed forever. -
my point was that it's not a "hunting" law. It's for everyone everyday while in the woods. The guy just wanted to know the fine.

for what it's worth, I don't believe damaging a tree on public land is a game law. Any joker can go into a forest and be fined for doing it. It is proven screw ins don't hurt trees, just their timber value and it's not illegal to do anywhere other than public land that doesn't allow it. I've trimmed a few small limbs and approach trails on some national forest. Nothing my hand pruner couldn't handle. Lock me up I guess. I don't condone illegal activities, especially by hunters, but I don't see the issue with answering the guys question. Bashing him accomplishes nothing.

I have to imagine nobody pays that though. Whens the last time you paid full price for a speeding ticket?

as i watched last night I wondered if I would have stayed in my store (small business owner, screw the chains) armed to the teeth or figured they might eventually get me and just chalk it up as an insurance claim... I can't imagine shooting a bunch of people to defend material possessions would ever end well or be worth it. The principal of it all is what makes the decision tough. -

this became better tv than the bills game last night. I hate that it's about race. Right or wrong, justice should be for all colors and not made out to be a big deal or a small deal based on race, gender, sex, sexual orientation etc. That being said, it's sad to see the looting of a bunch of local stores that were probably owned by african americans. I understand that it's a bunch of kids just getting in on the fun and a small group of anarchists who set the fires... but it just doesn't help their cause at all. I am not black so I cannot relate, but the facts seem to support the cop defending himself against a proven criminal. It still sucks that it happened but even worse is the outcome. -
probably jets fans

you really shouldn't skin and butcher the same day. hang em up and then do the work friday or even saturday. better tasting meat.

I find it curious that I get flamed when I bring up the same issue with today's deer pics, but now we can all criticize this guy for doing the same with his "wolf". The trend needs to stop. Sitting 5' behind your 6 point to make it look huge is just deception. You should be happy with your trapped coyote, your 6 point and whatever your posing with. What egos do we have that we need to trick a bunch of people on the internet with funny camera tricks?
-
in fairness, you didn't just forward a picture. You made some claims, and followup claims. Had you posted the picture and asked what we thought that would have been one thing. Instead you made claims to species and weight. What'd you expect?

totally hear you. Started hunting public land this year as I moved and bought a summit viper. It's a lot of work and sweat. Not to mention good approach trails. It's hard work. But I'm not sure there's another option...

too many people in this thread are using the term coyote in general term. what we have in NY is not a "coyote". It's an eastern coyote. A coyote in it's native original form is much smaller, like a big fox and started in the west. So be careful when you're google searching. the eastern coyote does have wolf in it, so people getting confused can be common. very hard to judge size given how far he's sitting back. My golden retriever weighs 85 and looks bigger than that. I'd put that coyote at 60 max and will stand by it until we see some more pics and preferably a scale pic.

beach nailed it. That's the way to go. you pay for the weight of course, but still cheaper than grocery store beef when it's all said and done. Consider maybe bringing it on the plane during travel? I think you can do that.
-
I'll answer your question. It's probably <$200 and first offense probably wont revoke any license. I don't see it in the same light as baiting, poaching, not tagging etc. But it is still a rule. All that being said we've used screw ins for 40+ years and never killed a tree. Back them out a little every season and they're fine. Let a stand go once and the pine just swallowed them whole and it's doing fine. Pricey, but look into some lone wolf climbing sticks. They're much more portable than the cheap sticks and much easier to use.
-
big. but tiz not 150. Could easily do some studies of the skull and tell i would imagine. The eastern coyote has wolf in it's genetics so I would not be surprised to see some recessive traits pop up here and there.

you can take a perfectly acceptable shot and make a human error. good grief.
