The guy you describe is more likely to take his grandpas rifle and go into the the woods and far less likely to drop a grand on a bow and a ton more on good stands, good scent control and scouting so he can get close enough to a kill a deer. And if he does give it a whirl he gives up. So you're all right, it's not the weapon. It's the person. And unfortunately the season is more prevalent with these kind of people. Is that a statement that can be argued?

How is asking for a little respect and appreciation for the sport driving out the average Joe? If the average Joe is the guy on the radio, than good riddance. I'd rather be a part of small group of responsible good people than a large group laced with crap. I've never done that. A young Hunter should shoot all he/she can. Said it plenty of times here.

You'd be surprised the money in this town. Top ranked schools. But ignorant comments are fun.

No. People will form an opinion based off a few idiots. It's why every Harley rider is in a biker gang, every nascar fan is a redneck etc. if there are enough bad experiences or enough bad apples to create a stereotype then the less they begin to distinguish. All it takes is one slob to be the neighbor of a fence sitter to change their mind. My fathers not a huge gun guy but supports them. His neighbor constantly shoots all weekend long. It comes with living with the country but it certainly doesn't help our neighbors feel like they should support his crusade against the safe act. A little common courtesy is all that is needed sometimes instead of just doing what you want because it's legal.

It's never ever been about trying to persuade an anti-Hunter, just like a bleeding liberal will never be persuaded to become a conservative. It is and always has been about the fence sitters or those without an opinion. Remember the thread last year that had a doe running around Long Island with an arrow in her jaw? Or the Hunter who litters in the park or shoots a dog or near a school. Those are the incidents which will turn those who are on the fence against us.

Wahhh. A gun Hunter does something stupid, I comment on it and the world defends him. Were some of you guys in ferguson last month protesting that too?
-
depends on your perspective though doesn't it? only once. to put a dying deer out of his misery.
-
You all have picked out one little point I made about gas stations, yet fail to address the Hunter safety issue I've brought up 3 times.

I'm sorry, I thought this was a NY hunting forum... Out west does not apply. Every 130+ class buck killed in 7J on my families land has had the wind in his face or crosswind. Until all the trees disappear and we start hunting mulies and elk on NY then I really don't care about hunting deer out west.

If you rent the house why do you care about the lawn?

Antler Restrictions - voluntary or otherwise
Five Seasons replied to Curmudgeon's topic in Deer Hunting
Well said. I do not have the luxury and time to trophy hunt but have made the decision to only shoot 2.5s. My retired father has eaten tag soup by passing deer most guys would put on the wall. Everyone wants to shoot the biggest buck they can but knows they'll settle. I have yet to meet a meat Hunter who passed the buck for the doe with the exception of the guy filling his freezer and passing the young buck. -
You know I'm a bow hunter at heart. I also gun hunt. Several times now I've mentioned that there is a difference between gun only hunters and those who hunt with both and per capita the gun only Hunter has a greater track record of incidents like that mentioned in the news article... Which we all seem to have ignored and decided to bash me and defend him.
-
I said not ALL. Listen I have my opinions. They may not be popular but I'm not alone. I'm not going to back down with how I feel or why. You should all know that about me by now. Not here to be everyone's buddy, but to talk hunting. You don't have to like me. I don't break the rules and I'm not going anywhere so if you don't like me you can block me.
-
So did 90% of the people in this thread. But please do proceed to single me out.
-
Self perceived? Did you read the article? And please, by all means explain how I'm getting bit in the behind.
-
Try doing it on an iPhone... What was your contribution to the topic? I stand by my statement regarding gun hunters, their subculture and how they're bad for the sport.
-
I stated clearly that I shot the deer DURING legal light and wanted to put him out of his misery at night. Instead of waiting till the next day. Sorry we all aren't perfect shots. I never said I was shooting an unwounded deer. So call me a thief for shooting a deer that I shot during legal light and was still alive when I got to him. I'll gladly be labeled a thief if you think that's stealing. I was not going to stand there listening to him suffer watching puffs of vapor pour out of his wound... I was not going to climb to the top of the ravine to get a good enough signal to radio my 1 and only hunting partner with a cell phone so he could maybe reach an Econ officer for permission. This was 12 years ago and cell phones weren't common. That's another 30 minutes of that deer suffering. I put a slug in his heart and he expired and I'd do it again. Thief or no thief. /high horse
-
That has been disproven several times over over recent years
-
But every year we try to make hunting easier. That's my high horse. It's not supposed to be easy. And because the gas pumper smells like he does he sees less deer and shoots at running deer off in the distance. Gives us all a bad name. We can continue to turn a blind eye to these kind of hunters, and see where we end up or we can speak up against it. I've encountered 3 trespassers in my time on my private land. All gun hunters, all smoking and "stalking". It's left a bad taste in my mouth.
-
No issue pumping gas after the kill. And for the final time I'll state that no group is perfect, but per capita there is a difference. And again, which group shoots more hunters?
-
If you're in the woods after dark or before light with a gun how do you prove you're not hunting? If your gun is unloaded do you just load it at legal light... It's real quiet to load my browning.
-
I never said non-bow hunters are bad. But there are per capita more irresponsible gun hunters than bow. They make hunters of all kinds look bad. Yes it includes the archer who does not practice, but when it comes to hunters shooting hunters that make newspaper headlines it's rarely if ever an arrow. And I would put a large sum of money on the claim that those who do shoot other hunters are not also bow hunters, but strictly gun. He probably pumped gas in his clothes on the way to his area. Stop defending the slob Hunter

States not out yet unless ole miss takes them out. It's the ACC/old big east of basketball. We self canabalize ourselves
-
Not very often that you fling multiple arrows at a running deer. No Hunter is perfect. And I've never barb able to hear a miss it gut shot from any weapon. Again, don't be silly. You know who my comment is aimed at.
