  1. i think part of it has to do with breakup too. just plain blaze will stick out. at least wear the orange breakup if you can.
  2. will the deer eat the oranges if I pile them near my stand though? because they tend to eat the apples I pile there...
  3. that's tough. there's that constant give and pull between wanting the woods and deer to yourself and wanting hunting tradition and popularity to continue on. at least the guns aren't going off.
  4. good to hear. I'm a wildlife research and smokey's guy. nice to know other brands work too.
  5. my time after i get a deer down is pretty busy. gutting, dragging, hanging and a trip to the butcher or getting out the butchering equipment. Football, beers and stories with friends. Hopefully that's the case with him and he'll post soon. even with a shot i know was true i still get nervous until i find the deer.
  6. that's me. even during gun, but not bow. but i hunt private land with little problems with tresspassing. not that it's unrealistic, but for someone to shoot at me in a tree during deer season? that's pretty tough to buy.
  7. you didn't answer my question. I planted a clover plot the size of my living room on a 5 acre spot behind the house I bought last year. It blends in pretty good with the clover that was already there. I don't hunt over it. Never shot a deer on this land although I could have. I'm sorry this bothers you. Guess I'll keep shooting deer on my other property in the transition between their beds and the cornfields... after I call the farmer and tell him to cut down his apple trees and stop planting his corn.
  8. do you mean people are pushing the woods? i'm confused.
  9. a food plot and game cameras. End of the world. I hope you've never hunted in or around a corn field, old apple tree or even a scrape. There's no difference.
  10. That's considerate of you. our neighbor doesn't care and shot all sorts of guns for a few hours both days this weekend. Actually a little worried for my safety as our property wraps around theirs. They know we bowhunt. Barely shoot all summer...
  11. This morning was funny in 8f. Calm and warmer than I thought. Then wind picked up. Coulda shot a nice 4 but surprised not to see the doe I usually do. Lot of weird weather shifts going on making picking a stand sort of a coin flip. Hard to pattern as some does may come in to heat early so the bucks will be all over the few that are early. Idk...
  12. Disagree. Most of field and stream is junk. Their rain gear is so noisy you might as well be talking. Their quality is ok and their insulation is poor. I don't believe any of their stuff has scent control. All that said they make some decent stands and other equipment. And it's still probably a better bang for your buck than the extremely overpriced UA. Most of my stuff is either cabelas branded or scent lok. I consider that above average but not UA or Sitka.
  13. My thoughts too. Never consider it done till he's laying in front if you. Pulling the trigger is the easiest part of hunting.
  14. It was in the rules and regs book this year. They basically through out a couple options for consideration. 1 buck rule Shorter gun season Ar's Can't remember the rest
  15. They should legalize crossbows first. I should be able to hunt with what I want. Spears too.
  16. Wife made this bean and ground venison dish in a pepper the other night. Had leftovers for lunch yesterday and the pollution hasn't stopped. Figured I wouldn't see anything as a result but had a real wide forky 4 give me a 12 yard broadside shot as he worked a mock scrape. Grow up little buddy.
  17. half our before "shooting light" for me. that's not dec light. you shouldn't make any more noise in the dark then the light. get a good headlamp.
  18. simple is good. but always better? I'm assuming you shoot a long bow then?
  19. for me it's less about success rates and being miserable. I've killed them in wind. hard for them to hear you sneak in and hard for you to hear them. still plenty of prime time left to hunt in this.
  20. Total agreement. Just pointing out pros and cons. Up to the viewer to choose what's important and what to buy. Glad I don't have to spray my drop when it gets cold. If you're a good shot, you're a good shot. Regardless of your rest.
  21. Screw ins, sticks, ladders? Hoisting the stand up, hanging it. Sure you might kill a doe, but a nice buck is out of there. A good stand needs the lanes trimmed, approach trail cut... Heck we do all this in early spring. One more trip in September to trim summer growth. I don't even like checking cams. A climber in the right area not needing lane cutting is a quick shimmy up the tree. I rarely climber hunt but would choose that over disturbing any area.
  22. Dude. You sound like a winner. Leave the wife to do all the work and get up during the night?
  23. Check out a trophy ridge and some other drops. They contain the arrow. It cannot fall out and it cannot be lodged in the biscuit either.
