I HATE when my sinew rehydrates...!! It's kinda like peeing my pants, but not as warm... Please don't ask me why I know that...<<sigh>>... -
If you are going to buy one rifle for all around medium to big game hunting North America , you can never go wrong with the 30-06... Choosing the walnut stock and blued finish in a proven bolt action just makes it MORE special... I LOVE you man.. << Tears trickle down Pygmy's ruddy little cheeks>>.......

It must be the water....

I wish you would stop posting that picture of me, Al.... Everytime you post it I get all of those calls from hot young women and The Mermaid gets all pissed off...
-
Yup...He also shot hundreds of elephants with other chamberings too, including the .303 British and other contemporary chamberings such as the .318 WR.....

As subsistence hunters, they can basically take the game any way they can...It is common practice to wait until a herd of caribou is crossing a river and then motor up in a boat and shoot them in the head and then drag them to shore... I am not criticizing...It is part of making a living up there..Get the most protien you can while it is available, because there there are only a few times per year when it IS readily available..

Yes, the tribal people, including the Inuits, use whatever ordinance they can get thier hands on.. Much of the game they shoot is shot with military FMJ in whatever caliber they have, .223, 7.62 x 51, 7.62 x 53 etc...
-
The .243 was not introduced until the mid 1950s....Bell was hunting about 50 years prior to that....
-
The guy that shot the polar bear did not know what the chambering was of his guides rifle until AFTER he had shot his bear... The bear in my guide's video in NWT appeared to be at bay....he looked exhausted, possibly from being chased for miles by snow machines... I do know that when that kid shot him with his .222 , he dropped like a rock...

Paul Mauser figured that out in 1893, except it was the 7x57 and required a standard ( long) bolt action... W.H.M.Bell shots hundreds of elephants with it along with all kinds of other African game.. Ballistics in modern rifles ( the mauser m1893 was limited to 45,000 PSI) duplicate 7MM08 ballistics

You could hunt coastal grizzlies or polar bears with either a .308 or a 30-06 with well constructed 180-200 grain bullets and not be poorly armed..Admittedly, there are better choices, but many of the biggest brown, Kodiak and polar bears bears shot prior to the mid 1960's were cleanly killed with the 30-06...The ,308 was not so midstream back in those days, but with heavy bullets would do the job also.. On a caribou hunt in NWT 50 miles south of the Arctic Circle, my Inuit guide showed me a video on his camcorder of his 11 year old son shooting a 10 foot polar bear with a .222 Rem...I talked to another friend who did a polar bear hunt up there..He was carrying a .375 H&H, which he killed his bear with, but his Inuit guide was " backing him up" with a 22-250....

Yeah,,Get up real close and stick your face in his face to tell him that, and see what happens...Hehehe....
-
Yeah, I know what you mean... With my luck, I'll probably come back as a worm and my wife will come back as a chicken...

The rain is a'fallin' right now...Over half an inch here in Dogpatch today, and more on the way tonite..

Porcupines don't work dead trees...They eat live bark, twigs, leaves etc.... They will chew on your treestand, but that is because they like the glue in the plywood, particle board, or whatever..They also gnaw wooden handles on tools such as shovels or axes, because of the salt on them from sweaty hands... But as far as shredding a dead tree, I would say IX-nay on the ORKY-pay.....
-
Pileated woodpeckers shred trees....They are the size of crows and make chips that may be 3 or 4 inches long... However...Due to the extent of the damage my money would be on the bear...
-
How long has the tree been down ?? If it fell recently, I would blame the damage on pileated woodpeckers...If it has been on the ground a few months.... bears...In either case, it appears to be a dead ash with critters digging for the ash borers... Sure does look like woodpecker work, despite the fact that the trunk was obviously on the ground when it was worked...bear is a definte possibility, however...

Quality set up....My nephew has used his New Englander for many years for deer with the rifle bbl and small game with the shotgun bbl...

The sluts...You just can't trust 'em....<<sigh>>...

Happy birthday, Paulie !! Haven't heard much from you lately...

Humbling is a good term for sporting clays, Mike... I shot my first round up at Rochester Brooks a few years back I considered myself a better than average wingshot on game, and I had burned a few 50 straights at skeet and done fairly well at trap.. I walked off the course with my dick in the dirt...
