  1. I have found .22 shot shells quite effective on barn rats and chipmunks at ranges up to ten yards or so...Good "inside the barn" loads...They also pattern much better out of short pistol barrels than they do from longer rifle barrels..Not sure why...I would guess that in the longer bbl the rifling would have more time to get the shot "whipping" and hence blow the pattern.
  2. A very cool piece of memorabilia, Biz... Appears to be the head of a 3" shell, surrounded by .45 acps with a 30-06 in the primer hole..I would guess that the larger projectile is a .50 BMG..... I brought home an intact ( empty) 5" shell casing, but I am not sure what happened to it..probably lost it in my house fire in 1994...Wish I still had it...
  3. The amount of expansion would depend more on the bullet construction than the bullet weight...At ranges of 100 yards or less, with bullets of the same or similar construction, the difference would be negligible, as would be the point of aim.. Just about all, if not all .30 cal hunting bullets ( not fmj or target) of 150 grains or heavier are designed for big game and will expand sufficiently enough and penetrate deeply enough for pass through shots on deer, as well as most other ranging type shots, except perhaps for the infamous Texas heart Shot.. Just apply them to a vital area and you will have a dead deer, pronto...
  4. Most of Alaska does not have a special archery season...Moose season is moose season and you can carry any legal weapon you want...many people who choose to bowhunt carry heavy caliber handguns or compact shotguns or rifles while bowhunting as bear protection.. My most sincere condolences to the survivors of the victim... As sensational as such stories are, bear maulings are relatively rare, even in Alaska I have hunted there five times an encountered perhaps a dozen grizzlies, and never had an issue... Still, the possibility is always present..When I was hunting there, I never went ANYWHERE without my rifle, including going out behind the camp to answer the call of nature.. It was always a somewhat tense while we were packing meat, or especially approaching a kill to bring out a second or third load...We made lots of noise on the approach, and everybody was locked, loaded and alert when we approached the meat pole or kill site..
  5. If they hadn't legalized rifles here a few years back, I'd be using one of these.... HOWEVER, for many years I killed deer with a smoothbore 20 gauge...It worked fine within it's limitations...I got pie plate groups at 75 yards, which was good enough for most of the woods hunting I did...Never had any issue killing deer with good shot placement and Foster style slugs, although I eventually switched to Brennekes because I got a little better accuracy and better penetration with them... Good luck with your new gun...
  6. I am no bear expert but have seen a few big ones...He is a BMF....
  7. My wife, The Lovely Mermaid, owns 107 acres and allows me to hunt it and also pay half the property taxes on it.... It is surrounded by several hundred acres of mostly forested land...Judging by the gunfire I hear during deer season, the neighbors all hunt..I don't know or care care what they shoot, because it is none of my business... I have lived in the area all of my life and also have access to several hundred acres of private land that I have permission to hunt, but since I have become a doddering old man I spend most of my time sitting in my heated tower blind overlooking my food plots, wondering why I am sitting there waiting for some silly ass deer when I could be doing something fun, like hunting small game, upland birds and waterfowl, or fishing...
  8. Perhaps your taste buds are more refined than mine.....Everyone's taste varies...<<smile>>....
  9. Do it..You'll never regret it, but if you DON'T go, you may regret that when you get older.... I like the ML hunt, because I was never a very skilled bowhunter, but the MZ hunt falls in the rut while they are still bugling and very responsive to calls, as opposed to the later rifle seasons, which fall after the peak of the rut..
  10. IMHO, an adult doe or a 1.5 year old buck tastes as good as any fawn and you get 1/3 more meat...Older bucks tend to taste stronger....I have shot a few 2.5 to 3.5 year old rutting bucks that definitely had a stronger "musky" flavor than young bucks or any doe...
  11. Yes I would...Cool rack and will probably never be "normal"....Of course, I'd also shoot his little brother the spike or his sister the adult doe... The only deer I pass on are fawns, because a fawn is nearly as much work to process as a mature deer, but you get significantly less meat for your effort..
  12. I love the chevron on the second bear ....The one in the bucket is a hog... congrats to the cousins..!!
  13. Welcome aboard !! You certainly are DURABLE !!... Too bad you live in Yates County, however...Last I heard there are no deer or turkeys in Yates County...
  14. YEP....Found him froze to a tree.....
  15. Remington Mountain Rifle in 7MM08, Winchester M70 in .280 Rem, and perhaps my M-1 Garand will be in the blind for relatively close shots where I feel confident with the issue sights.. My muzzleloader is a vintage TC Hawken .50 cal. with a tang peep sight that my ex wife gave me for my birthday in 1976... I haven't fired a shotgun slug since they legalized rifles in my area and I'd prefer to keep it that way...Hehehe...
